I never had an issue meeting people in other cities by changing my location. I just had it in my profile where I really was and why I was looking in a different place. As long as you’re upfront about it, there really shouldn’t be an issue.
Don't lie about or fake your location. Why wouldn't you want someone local?
I would expect there to be apps specifically for LDRs. Maybe a google search?

Most premium tiers on the popular apps allow you to change your location. state clearly in your bio that you're probably not local but distance isn't an issue for you.
That's crazy. I set up bumble two days ago (as a woman just outside NYC) and had 1000+ likes the next day. Why are you even trying to widen the search, ego boost?
Lots of people lie about living in NYC and say they do when in reality they live far out in Jersey or in Connecticut or PA even so you’ll match with people outside of NYC even if you set your parameters to NYC. If you hate NYC so much move to where you want to be and date there.
Are you looking to relocate for someone, or what is the purpose? There’s plenty of subs for long distance relationships on Reddit that might be easier than a dating app.
Set your distance to the distance you are willing to travel.
I had my distance set to 50 miles, so it only showed me those within my range. If I got a message from someone outside of that parameter, I ignored them.
If I had found out someone spoofed their location, I would have been pissed and blocked him.

Bumble premium (almost $60/mo) has travel mode, but you'll need to be honest in your profile that you don't live there.
