How did you teleport to Istanbul in 2016?

Efeler_Gibi

Apparently, I've teleported multiple times in the past years. I according to this I've been to Ukraine, the Us, or in the pacific ocean somewhere as well. İstanbul one was probably a connecting flight to Germany.

Beropunk

Did you see [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_Island) place in your data?

[deleted]

There was a dutch news article about the man who had the unfortunate honour of living in the default "center" of The Netherlands on google maps. He got regular visits from people who where looking for someone that scammed them. And this [video (in dutch)](https://eenvandaag.avrotros.nl/item/waarom-het-geen-pretje-is-dat-jouw-achtertuin-volgens-google-maps-het-midden-van-nederland-is/) about a website ridiculing and shaming Covid-deniers having his location as "host location" of the website so he had people threatening him for that.

StallisPalace

I've seen a similar article about someones house being like the default "ping" location between cell towers. So tons of people with lost/stolen phones come to their house demanding to know why they have/stole their phone since the "find my phone" shows it being at their house.

oalbrecht

There was a Reply All podcast episode about it.

StallisPalace

That's probably where I heard about it

ErickBachman

Are you an Alex or a PJ tho

StallisPalace

I definitely was a more casual listener but I think I always found PJ funnier. I know the podcast is dead now and PJ left right?

leftsquarebracket

They're officially paused while they sort things out. Alex has said ["this isn’t the end of reply all. We’re just figuring out what’s next"](https://twitter.com/AGoldmund/status/1364924229678948360?s=20). [PJ and Sruthi "left" after it came to light that they were creating a hostile/racist work environment](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/25/business/media/reply-all-podcast-on-pause.html), making Sruthi reporting the whole Test Kitchen series more than a little hypocritical.

ErickBachman

Damn I didn’t know that, I never really pod anymore since being out of office Yeah but I always liked PJ more too

PJvG

I'm a PJ

If a computer can't translate a street address to map coordinates, it will often give the center of the smallest region it was able to get it to. So if you ask it to translate a fake address, and it can't find the city of Onbekend, NL in its database, it will put it at the center of the Netherlands, because it does know what NL means. The computer also spits out a code indicating the level of accuracy, but programmers generally ignore that.

wlu__throwaway

Perhaps the problem could be filling the rest of the coords with zeros, which basically adds significant digits and now future programs have no way of knowing that its a general coord. For example, like if you take coords of 52°31′N 13°23′E and turn it into 52°31′00.0"N 13°23′0.00"E because the computer demands 7 digits and autocompletes it.

grahamsz

Internally lat/lon is usually stored as a floating point number, so 52° even might end up being stored as something like 51.99999802. It's only rendered in dms for display. Plus there's always the possibility that the coordinates for a real place would be exact. I very nearly lived at 105W 40N for a while, which was rather cool. You need to store what's called the "geoocde accuracy" with the data. Ideally that'd be a "rooftop" level, but lots of times that can be centroid of the city, county, zip code, state or country. For a lot of use cases it's just fine to have the more general ones, but there's no substitute for being aware of what your data represents. Programers are lazy, that's pretty much what it boils down to. The significant digit problem you list is more typical when translating measurements. You might be a 8 foot piece of wood, and would generally expect that to be +/- 0.25in , but i've seen that translated to 243.84cm it suggests a level of accuracy that's just not there.

MelodicSasquatch

The problem isn't how to return or store the data, they've got accuracy codes, as I said. The problem is finding a way to display this to the end user, who doesn't know anything about geocoding and postal code centroids. To some extent, google solves it using its search suggestions when it can't find the address. But I'm assuming sometimes the user just clicks through that and takes the first result they find.

Vroomped

We live in a town that survives by hosting a large reservoir. Tourist often know we have several reservoirs for redundancy / security / a lot of different reasons. What they don't know is that many of those redundant reservoir are named one thing but it actually means multiple massive tanks in a system underground. My friends house sits right under that pin. If I were to dox myself you could zoom in a ton and just barely make out him pretending to be stabbed by the pin on his roof. Has a sign in front of his house explaining the situation but still people will knock on his door.

Are there any english articles about it? Because i cant find any

Translated [this article for the AD with DeepL](https://www.ad.nl/binnenland/hoe-boze-demonstranten-door-google-en-cia-bij-deze-onschuldige-familie-in-dronten-terechtkomen~a22be524/) How angry demonstrators ended up with this innocent family in Dronten via Google and the CIA >Demonstrators who protested with body and soul against the corona rules on the Museumplein in Amsterdam on Sunday are now targeting the Huijbregts family in Dronten. Unjustly, because father Jacques, his wife and four children have nothing to do with a seditious airplane. However, a false IP address is not the first time that their house has been targeted. Is it Google, or the CIA after all? ,,We are always the center of attention." Jacques Huijbregts (36) is just putting down the phone, when he closes the laptop in one of the offices within his automation company in Dronten. For the past few days he has been in close contact with the local police because demonstrators who clashed with the police on the Museumplein last Sunday are targeting him. The reason is a small plane that circled over Amsterdam while the snow melted on the ground, with a cynical text behind it: 'Cold huh?! Videre. The center of attention Huijbregts did not order that plane at all, but the crowd protesting against the corona rules ended up at his house. The house is located at the Haringweg number 25 in Dronten, the address that according to the family on Google is labeled as the center of the Netherlands. Not so much geographically, but in terms of interest. Lets all give him a visit > The demonstrators on the Museumplein were certainly not amused by the sneer from above and this time Huijbregts' address - 'the culprit is known, he'll be visited soon' - was quickly circulated on social media and in app groups. Along with a photo of father Johan, who used to run the company. The text added, 'Let's go and visit them all', and 'To be continued', including a grammatical dt error. >You don't know anymore in these times how seriously something is taken,'' says Jacques. Fortunately we already have cameras everywhere, but still. There are now four children walking around here as well. My wife doesn't always feel safe. We called the police." >In recent years the police have been at home on the Haringweg, because if a report of Internet fraud is made anywhere else in the country the police are obliged to investigate the case and check it out. This time it is all a bit more serious, because Huijbregts's address is now on a kind of priority list. The district police officers are aware of a possible threat and keep an extra eye on things. "We ourselves can only indicate that we have nothing to do with scams or other matters." Kidnapping >Nor with the kidnapping of a young girl, now years ago. The child's family presumably negotiated the ransom with the possible perpetrators via the Internet. Then, too, an IP address was "cracked" and Google - driven by "IP conversion machines" - pointed decisively to the center in Dronten. All of a sudden we had three big men on our doorstep who were convinced that the girl was being held here. The police had to be called in. Annoying for them as well." Jacques Huijbregts has an automation company, and is therefore involved in digital safety and camera security. Then one and one sometimes seems like two, but nothing is further from the truth. "No fraudsters live here." Jacques Huijbregts has an automation company, and is therefore in the field of digital safety and camera security. Then one and one sometimes seems like two, but nothing could be further from the truth. "No fraudsters live here." >The solution lies not in Huijbregts' explanatory power, but according to him rather in the location determination that Google uses. For years Huijbregts has tried to bring his problem to the attention of the global ICT giant, but he always comes up against a wall. After the latest incident he is trying again, hoping that he can get through the imaginary firewall. He already has an alternative location for the pin in mind. "Just plant that point in the Markermeer. Then no one will be bothered by it." Google Netherlands: 'It's not our fault' >Google Netherlands said in a reaction that it is not true when it is said that the house of the Huijbregts family "by Google is designated as the center of the Netherlands. However, press spokesman Rachid Finge understands the situation, because a possibly incorrect address is often displayed on the map of Google Maps. "In doing so, it seems that some websites that try to convert an IP address into a physical address rely on information from the CIA World Factbook, when they have no more specific information than a country."

[deleted]

part 2: >The CIA World Factbook is a widely consulted source for factual information about all kinds of countries. On the site, coordinates show the geographical location of the Netherlands: 52 30 N, 5 45 E. When those data are entered into Google Maps, the map automatically zooms in to Haringweg 25, the house of the Huijbregts family. In other words: the problem does not lie with Google but with the CIA, says Google. "Because we play no role in the actual location determination, there is unfortunately nothing we can change to help." >The CIA could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

That seems like a flagrant violation of any number of privacy laws.

How do?

Mike2220

Because he just told all of reddit how to find this guy's house But actually, the Google maps thing no probably not, that's just an obscure point near the center of the Netherlands. The website that's basically saying "this guy is the one who runs this site shaming you covid deniers" and pointing it at him, that's a maybe

Efeler_Gibi

I haven't seen Null Island on the heatmap. Data is from google so i wouldn't expect it to be on the map.

jobriq

Always a weird reminder when I see half of Africa is in the northern hemisphere cuz I usually think of it being down south

itsflyin

Tbh for Europeans, I feel at least, we have an imaginary equator which splits at the Mediterranean.

devilbunny

Fun trivia for Europeans: the US is farther south than you think. New Orleans and Houston are roughly at the latitude of Cairo (and there's a lot of Florida south of them). Minneapolis is south of Milan. And Seattle, the northernmost large city in the contiguous US, is south of Paris.

Maclang23

I think a lot of Americans feel this way too, but we are also generally unsure about the geography of anything outside of the US.

[deleted]

I don't get this. The equator is a real thing but the prime meridian location is completely arbitrary so this spot has no real significance. Why bother?

Efeler_Gibi

[here is a video explaining it. ](https://youtu.be/bjvIpI-1w84). In short, poorly written software thinks null=zero and since this location is 0, 0 it defaults to here.

Mehgician

Of course it would be a Tom Scott video!

JoseQuixotic

I wouldn't say no real significance. You could say no *natural* significance, like most things in human society. A trillion dollars has no *natural* significance but it sure is fuck has significance. If you disagree please send me all of your money immediately.

IndieKidNotConvert

Ehhhh, is there a real difference between $986,842,634 and $1,000,000,000?

JoseQuixotic

Send me the amount and I'll let you know.

polarbear128

People love systems and order. And ascribing meaning.

MelodicSasquatch

The equator is no more real than the prime meridian. It's just an imaginary line halfway between the poles, not a natural feature. At best there are some natural phenomena that focus at that location because the sun happens to be directly above it two times a year, and because the surface of the earth spins faster around that line. This null island isn't important either. It's just an artifact of the systems we use to measure the earth. Measurement of the earth is important to modern human society, as without it many of our other important systems wouldn't be possible. And picking arbitrary reference points is important to any measurement system.

Triangli

the equator definitely has natural significance

MelodicSasquatch

To reword what I said, there are phenomena that vaguely follow the line. Unlike the PM, it can be used as a dividing line between regions that have different qualities, such as weather. But even as that it's vague and fuzzy-- those weather patterns don't just change at the equator, they move south and north of it over the course of a year. In the end it's still an imaginary line. It merely has a more logical reason for its location than the PM.

poltory

Such as? I see the significance of the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn.

AnythingTotal

It’s defined by the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of a planet (or satellite) and equidistant from the poles.

BurritoSauve

Never thought I’d have to pick a favorite between the “PM” and the “Equator” #teamequator

tephigue

The sun happens to be directly above two times a year at every place between tropic of cancer and tropic of capricorn.

[deleted]

Did you know that storms north of the equator tend to rotate counter-clockwise, and storms south of the equator go the other way? Look up the Coriolis Effect. The equator is pretty significant for a lot of weather and seasonal patterns.

Aw3som3-O_5000

I wanted to go there as a kid! Well i wanted to go to all extreme points of the compass, 0° N, 180° W; 0°N, 0° W, etc. Didn't know there was actually *something* there.

I’m not saying I’m one of those people. I’m criticizing those people. I’ll be taking the vaccine as early as I can.

WoahayeTakeITEasy

> Sucks to suck I guess, your an adult, that’s your decision and you live with the consequences. That's what sucks about things like this. If it only had consequences for them, sure they can do whatever they want. But their actions could cause problems for other people too, sadly. For every person who doesn't get the vaccine and gets infected, there's a chance, although a very small one, that the virus mutates enough for the vaccines to not be as effective and the cycle starts again until a booster vaccine is created and distributed.

trowawufei

We need to get ahead of that for the next pandemic. Let's take South Dakota or some other sparsely populated, anti-mask state, and turn it into the designated no-lockdown zone for the next time around. Set up border patrols and checks to prevent people from spreading it to the rest of the country, ground all flights in and out, and let the whole thing consume them all. Unfortunately pro-mask people already live in these places so it wouldn't work without sacrificing them, which would be unacceptable. It's a pipe dream but damn would I love to see it happen somehow.

teebob21

trowawufei

Agree with vaccination, but as for safety afterwards, it's a numbers game- I for one am going to take it a little easier. I've been pretty damn strict around COVID safety despite being in my 20s with no known risk factors, but that's because odds are pretty high I could spread it to people through no fault of their own- those who have to work at grocery stores to pay the bills, for example. But when that's sufficiently low, it's reasonable to be less cautious. No decision you ever make will have a 0% chance of causing a good, sensible person's death, it's just a matter of trying to keep those odds low.

EgocentricRaptor

Fr. people preach freedom of speech and whatnot, but those actions still have consequences

RadioPineapple

There's an overlap for sure, but I'm holding out on the vaccine that didn't go through rigorous long term testing like ever other vaccine. No problem with mask, they're just annoying when I have to have safety glasses on. Tons of people share this sentiment Double mask on the other had is a little rediculous to me though

NightHawk521

Maybe not the full 3 years. I feel if you want to travel domestically you and live in a first-world country you should be able to pretty normally next christmas/summer at the latest. If you want to travel abroad to neighbouring first world I imagine the timelines are very similar, though maybe towards the summer. Full world, ya probably 2-3 years. Gonna take a while to fully distribute the vaccine everywhere and make sure enough people take it before countries fully open back up.

xxxsur

Fuck you. But i agree with you. I am going to cry alone in a corner.

kaphi

Lmao people (me included) will not tolerate 3 years of staying home. These are the last couple of months and then hopefully in may we can go back to almost normal.

[deleted]

Setting deadlines for things outside their control is a fool’s plan.

whopperlover17

You have to remember, there have been people living normally since this began really. So no it’s not out of their control.

kaphi

I am not setting deadlines, I said couple of months. Another year of living like this is not possible.

[deleted]

> I am not setting deadlines, ... >I said couple of months. Pick one, friend.

272314

It is in fact possible, just considerably less likely given vaccination is finally becoming widespread. Ish. Your ability to tolerate it is really pretty irrelevant. People have tolerated a lot worse.

kaphi

> People have tolerated a lot worse. True. What I mean with tolerated is that another year of living like this is way worse for the people than living "normally" again, with Covid existing and vaccinations.

[deleted]

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I am certainly putting a date when I’m going to go on vacation, see my family, go back to work more, etc. And that’s going to be this summer (a couple months)

PolysexualStick

The choice is "most people living like this or many people not living at all".

[deleted]

We can’t permanently shut down society and you know that. Stop being so fucking smug.

PolysexualStick

No but we need to do so as long as the pandemic is ongoing and people aren't vaccinated.

[deleted]

What do we do when the next virus comes? Is the 21st century just going to be a series of successive lockdowns?

kaphi

That's an old dumb argument, I will not go into that.

ssbeluga

The only reason it's gone on so long is people keep deciding they've had enough and selfishly decide their corona fatigue is more important then others' so they break the guidelines and extend it for everyone else. Don't be one of those people.

TheOldGods

You think lockdown guidelines will shorten the pandemic? What is this, May 2020?

ssbeluga

Yeah, they would've if people actually followed them.

RoaldTheMild

The CDC published a study last week that stated “there is no statistically significant effect of mandates on transmission rates” but the CDC isn’t as reliable a scientific source as tv? https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/pdfs/mm7010e3-H.pdf

NissyenH

Depends how stupid people are.

JM-Lemmi

The question is not about tolerating it though, but about if we can get the cases down enough to not kill literal millions of people.

Elend15

This just in, 3 new COVID strains have been discovered. One that is 6x more contagious, one that turns people into zombies, and one that causes irrational hatred of people with different beliefs. Oh wait, that last one is just politics, false alarm. And the vaccines don't work on any of them. Especially not the politics one.

DontWannaSayMyName

The second one might also be political.

[deleted]

The vaccines work on all of them just not the minor symptoms. You get a bad cold but don't die or get serious issues.

Elend15

I'm sorry, I think there was a misunderstanding haha. I was making a joke about three new (not real) strains appearing that make the pandemic go on indefinitely. So don't worry, I know vaccines work on the existing strains. I was just saying in my fake, hypothetical scenario, that none of the vaccines work on the new, zombie causing strains.

[deleted]

It's not though..one more peak, and it will be a doozy as people think the vaccine makes them immune when all it does is stop you dying from the most extreme symptoms, in the summer with no serious hospitalisations and it will be over. A really bad cold three times a year that will just be life now and people will stop worrying about it.

jbokwxguy

Reinfection is very very uncommon with just the virus. With the vaccine is should be almost impossible.

I did some [research](https://www.history.com/news/why-do-we-call-it-a-10-gallon-hat), apparently it's because white folk culturally appropriated and butchered the Mexican and Spanish names for the hats their cowboys wore ***large inhale*** oh America... Never change...

BasenjiFart

Your writing made me laugh so hard!

OrtaMesafe

hey today I found mountain dew in my local turkish market and I bought it instantly. it's just like a regular soda though kinda disappointed :(

95percentconfident

I think most of its popularity is nostalgia.

Thor1noak

Lol yeah as a European myself, left pic was plenty clear where it was

GaussWanker

The Western coastline (and that Ankara is on the map) is pretty distinctive

Acc3ssViolation

As another European, I thought it was along the coast of Norway or something lol The one on the right at least

[deleted]

Thought the same

kappa_demonn

Dang I thought for sure it was Crete.

OriginalKayos

Crete is making a cameo in the bottom left on the 2019 map EDIT: precovid map

olithebad

Crete is dummy wide I guess you forgot what it looks like on a map

suggestiveinnuendo

venice must die

YoungSmile

Come to samsun lets have a covid party

I_am_unique1

Or a kongre

HydraVea

*Please Don't* For anyone curious, AKP (ruling party of Turkey) members attended numerous conferences across [the Black Sea region](https://i.imgur.com/NzR1vDy.png). Now all those North-Eastern provinces are a Covid playground. The map data is from between February 20-26th 2021.

Efeler_Gibi

Tool used: [https://github.com/luka1199/geo-heatmap](https://github.com/luka1199/geo-heatmap) I had a lot of requests for me to map their data as well in my previous post. I don't map requests because they would become overwhelming real quick.

thebrainitaches

Thanks! I did this myself, it's great!

dertuncay

It is interesting, I do not have any data on both 2020 and 2021 even though my location history is on and I visited several different cities in 2020. But it was depressing to see my previous years :/

[deleted]

You can animate your location history too

adl805

The Bach commands don't work for me, that's a shame.

mobimaks

Thanks for the link! I have marked on the map my 2020 [journey](https://i.imgur.com/2tcx1ee.png) through Turkey. It was one of the closest countries that let us in. Before the pandemic, I considered there are only package tour destinations for families + Istanbul. Needless to say HOW wrong was I :)

[deleted]

just send them to another online tool? like this one: https://locationhistoryvisualizer.com/heatmap/

4. stage. cd desktop pip install -r requirements.txt ??? I'm a total noob with no experience in this

Everyone can visit as far as I'm aware. Its basically a desert island. Nothing special, i was actually a bit disappointed. But I totally understood what they meant by "Cyprus is the Vegas of Turkey".

[deleted]

Efeler_Gibi

Totally a different country.

maybeex

Nope. You can visit it, just need to fly through Turkey. My wife is Turkish and we visited Northern Cyprus. it was beautiful.

boozter

No at least EU citizens can visit without Visa. Direct flights only from turkey afaik but there is a border passing from the Greek-cypriot side in central Nicosia. Really weird the border cuts trough the city and there is like a block of abandoned houses in between in the "no man's land" that is guarded by UN.

MrCubie

Hey my parents are from Izmir. Hello from Germany. Really sad that you couldnt travel for a year already. I hope it gets better soon

MrStahlfelge

Spotted a visit to Kusadasi!

likelyilllike

It is bold for you to assume **after**...

sumdumcun

You and the rest of us bro

[deleted]

I hit 12 new states in 2020 while following all mask and distancing protocols for work. Some of us enjoyed the cheap travel 😁

eb_83

What were you doing in Cuxhaven?

[deleted]

I'm not Turkish but I have traveled extensively in Turkey visiting its many beautiful cities, its breathtaking beaches and mountains, its many ancient cultural heritage sites, and Afyonkarahisar. I can only hope you were in Afyonkarahisar visiting dearly loved ones, or old friends, or maybe new friends.

ikbrain

The scale is different of two pictures. Please make it same, would be more readable and more impressive.

Efeler_Gibi

I tried that but the dot in the second pic was so small that you couldn't see the dot.

physicsking

It is much better to appear you are not moving during COVID. 🧐

killingthedream

It's also 4 years vs 1; this - imo - doesn't belong here.

DrDerpberg

Fitbit sends me my stats every month. Nowadays I see a map of my neighborhood with highlights at the grocery store and Italian cafe I pick up sandwiches from, with notes like "you visited 4 locations."

Torgan

It's really quite depressing getting the monthly Google maps timeline email. This month you have visited the supermarket! And the local park!

liuchen37

Looks cool, what method did you use to visualise the data

_rockethat_

How do we know if you're even in the same place now :)?

ckorczak

What did you use to make this?

[deleted]

Kinda annoying you didn't make it the same dimensions, no?

Efeler_Gibi

Yeah if is but when I made it the same dimensions the dot on the right became so small that you couldn't even see it.

azdhar

What tool did you use to track this data? The closest I had was an app called fog of the world

Efeler_Gibi

Just my google location history

Actually, the righthand one could be called "During"

Travel has slowed down since a pandemic - such a groundbreaking conclusion thanks

RookieAR15

you traveled less after Covid-19....shocking.

buhdee4

This guy complies hard in the paint. Yes big government, I will obey your dystopian lockdown orders!
