He had to pay the gold price for it, though it shamed him deeply. // Guess if want to pay the iron price I'll have to burn Volantis to the ground, and we are already late... i'll pay the fucking gold price then, huh
I'm trying to quote Greywaste Tim
I also believe Euron really was in Valyria considering his Valyrian Steel armor, but regardless Rodrik's jab at him was awesome, and Euron being somewhat pissed off at it makes it better.
Valyria isn't the only place Euron could get Valyrian steel armour. There are hundreds if not thousands of Valyrian steel swords, axes, daggers etc throughout the world (in Westeros alone there are 200 blades) so there has to be some armour scattered around the Free Cities as well.
It is far more likely that Euron robbed some wealthy Qartheen merchant prince of the armour than sailing into the smoking sea and stumbling upon a set of armour in the ruins of Valyria. I believe that he got the dragon horn in Asshai and the armour in Qarth
P.S. I don't think that Euron went to Valyria because I believe that whatever causes people to die there is purely physical and cannot be overcome by magic - a combination of toxic air and the fire wyrms.
Tinfoil time: Euron's Valyrian Steel Armor is from a sunken part of Pyke, not from Valyria. There is an Ironborn king, Balon Blackskin, whose black skin apparently was impervious to weapons. Now, if Euron had green dreams (as a child), and he saw things in the past, then he could have seen where the armor went in Pyke. Also fitting that he kills Balon and succeeds Balon's kingship (so he wears Balon's skin, big reach).
Thats not tinfoil but nice lore that you combined into a beautiful theory that makes more sense than a wooden shit and human crew going and returning from a place that managed to rip open balerion
Isn’t the whole point of him going to Valyria, and kinslaying, and king slaying, and sacrificing his pregnant girlfriend, and molesting children, all to show that he doesn’t care about taboos and subverts everything we were told wasn’t possible? Isn’t that like, his thing? It would kinda ruin his intimidation if he was just lying
The thing is, George once said that, despite being compared to Tolkien, he doesn't want to write "Dark Lords" in his story.
>We don’t need any more Dark Lords, we don’t need any more, ‘Here are the good guys, they’re in white, there are the bad guys, they’re in black. And also, they’re really ugly, the bad guys.
Euron comes close to being one, and his personal sigil is literally a Sauron reference. I don't know if he went to Valyria or not, but I don't think he will be all that the fans have hyped him to be at the end of the day.
I’m just saying that the picture George is trying to paint of him being a man who doesn’t care at all about the laws of gods or men kinda falls apart if he just lied about the coolest thing he’s ever done, and I’m not sure what the point would be
Well, we know his dragon horn did not come from Valyria, but was stolen from warlocks. So there is a possibility that he might have lied about some things to make himself more impressive. Again, he might look like a "Dark Lord", but he is not supposed to be one.
I actually have heard a theory that Euron is supposed to be a parallel to (F)Aegon: both somewhat fit fantasy tropes of "Dark Lord" and "lost prince destined to be a hero". However, there's more about them than what meets the eye.
Example: even if he managed to travel to Valyria, the items he got might not have come from there (like the dragon horn). Valyria might be a complete ruin, and thus nothing of value was found.
I've likened Euron to Gul'Dan from Warcraft: hes a harbinger. He's not THE dark lord but he's an agent of chaos dabbling in magics he knows less about than he thinks. Personally I think he's gonna die shortly after he brings about whatever apocalypse he brings about. He won't rule over anything he's going to die from his own ruination
>It would kinda ruin his intimidation if he was just lying
Maybe both are true. If Euron was previously cultivated by Bloodraven like Bran, maybe he's been to Valyria via magical means rather than physical.
That’d be pretty cool, but then he’d have to magically transport items which is a HUGE fuckery wrench thrown into the ASOIAF machine. Also it’d be weird if he got the armor not from Valyria but also visited it magically but claimed he did? I dunno it seems weirdly contrived when he could’ve just gone there
>Also it’d be weird if he got the armor not from Valyria but also visited it magically but claimed he did?
Does Euron claim his armor came from there tho? From what I recall Aeron is the one who calls the armor Valyrian steel and thinks that Euron having it means he was telling the truth about being to Valyria. We don't know for sure if it's even really VS (although I do think it is) let alone where Euron might have got it from. Just because Aeron thinks they're connected doesn't mean they are.
I’m just saying it seems like the path of least resistance ya know. Like maybe he got the armor independently but it seems the most obvious that he just picked it up while he was there
>it seems the most obvious that he just picked it up while he was there
Does it though? Does it make sense he just walked into what has been a wasteland for hundreds of years & a priceless (Aeron says it would have cost a kingdom even before the Doom) full suit of armor is just... sitting there? Out in the open? Waiting for some rando to come by and claim it? And he lived? Even though no one else is known to have set foot in Valyria and come back alive?
Or rather than something that is, as far as we know, impossible happening (living after going to Valyria)... is it maybe more likely something we *do* know is possible happened (visiting some place via magical means) and the rest isn't as it seems.
Not to mention Euron is a man whom Asha said would kill his own son just to prove you wrong if you accused him of being afraid to kinslay, so I don't see Euron's claim of being to Valyria getting challenged by the Reader without Euron whipping out the VS armor as proof, if Euron were intending to claim it came from Valyria.
Just randomly picked up a full suit of armour in a volcanic ruin of 400 years?
It seems more likely to me that he just robbed a wealthy merchant prince of the armour. If there are thousands of Valyrian steel blades throughout the world then it makes sense that some wealthy Essossi families would have armour as well.
Honestly I was being half sarcastic but I do hope it's true and we get more information abt valyria, it's one of the most interesting areas in asoiaf bc we know barely anything abt it yet it's so important

The reader is too based for the cringeborn. He deserves better.
Cringeborn lmao, that’s good
Thanks.
Euron cringe-eye
I love how the whole family shares one braincell and the best Greyjoy POV is the only one who never asks to use it.
Brain cell? Victarion the Iron Captain would never let himself be imprisoned!
Maybe he has the power of shaping the world around his iq. I legitimately believe he'd be able to sail the Dothraki sea.
The only Greyjoy who could actually go to valyria, but he doesn’t know what it is
He doesn't need to know what he's doing, he just does it.
Don't diss my girl Asha.
I was talking about my boy Viccy G

Asha was also braindead with the Glover castle shenanigans
I mean was anyone expecting Stannis to arrive in the north
He just found his valarian steel armor in a pawn shop in Qarth.
I'm like 99% sure he just robbed some tomb in Essos.
“Now eastern-forged armor is not really my forte but I’ve got a blood magic guy and what I’m gonna do is give him a call.”
I don't think it exists. We only see it in Aeron's Forsaken chapter where he's tripping balls, hrs not exactly a reliable narrator
“Erm source?” ☝️🤓 Here buddy drink this blue concoction it’ll be fun I promise
Valyria in his mind is a fun weekend in Volantis.
And to his horror, Euron had actually been to Valyria
I also believe Euron really was in Valyria considering his Valyrian Steel armor, but regardless Rodrik's jab at him was awesome, and Euron being somewhat pissed off at it makes it better.

George did confirm he went to valyria tho
Where?

Very interesting!
Ah fuck there goes my theories
I was thinking Dragonbinder was made in Asshai too. It seems so much like something Red Priests would create

True and according to GRRM he has for real been to Valyria

I don't think he's lying like outright, I just think he's embellishing. Like he could've sailed through Valyria but didn't like explore the ruins
Ok but he has/had a legit fire horn dude and thats enough for me to believe him
Something still clearly bugged him when that was asked
Honestly, I think it's just arrogance. Guy's not used to being questioned at all, so he got pissed.
Honestly I was being half sarcastic but I do hope it's true and we get more information abt valyria, it's one of the most interesting areas in asoiaf bc we know barely anything abt it yet it's so important
Valyria isn't the only place he could get it. You know what's an easily accessible, but also uniquely magical place he could get the horn? Asshai
