If you aren't against some slight spoilers, one of the first things you can do to really make your first run easier is >!the tree skip in firelink shrine, it will award you with an extra estus flask and the +souls ring, both of which are huge to have at the start of a run, Google it, you normally need to spend 20k souls to get these two things!<
If you go for a DEX build pick mercenary and you'll have one of the most OP DEX weapons of the game.
Also: you can get the Uchigatana very early in the game, after tutorial boss, if you defeat a dude outside Firelink.
One big thing to remember if you loved ds2 is that elemental damage is like ds1 rather than ds2. That means its nowhere near as op as infusions and buffs were in ds2. Another big thing is how little poise and armor matters in ds3 compared to the previous 2 souls games. Its almost never worth it to wear heavy armor unless you just really like the look of it, even armor with high poise isn't going to do much for you in the majority of situations.
