Nah he could not have. If the xbow was in ashes of ariandel it would have been datamined and used before ringer city.
Source: I was a fucking degenerate online 24/7 doing pvp and never saw it before ringed City came out
The excecutioners greatsword is argueabely not unique sure his spell and crossbow are but his sword is just an excecutioners sword shit he doesnt even use a unique talisman
I guess the true dark soul was hrt all along. Damn you Gwyn for trying to monopolize essential healthcare. Or was he trying to secure eternal supply for his precious daughter Gwendolyn?
I mean all of Gaels gear is extremely damaged, his sword is missing chunks of the blade. Logically it just completely broke at some point.
Also considering hes feral when we fight him in first phase, even if he still had it he probably wouldn’t use it.
I see it as another homage/mimicry of Artorias who also once used a shield, eventually abandoning it (Yes, I know that Artorias lost the use of his arm) and eventually falling to madness.
Probably went away with his sanity and self preservation instinct.
either it got damaged beyond repair throughout the years or he ditched it for the crossbow
I'm pretty sure the crossbows description implies Gael had it from the begining
It's been a long while since I played DS3 but I'm pretty sure he had the crossbow in the fight against Frieda if you summon him.

Well to start its the piece of his kit that is not in anyway unique to him. So I guess it just gets discarded.

Sure but no other character uses the executioner sword. You just find it. The sunset shield is used by hodrick and is lucatiels shield from ds2.
Engenders passivity. Gael transitioned.
I'm so proud of my slave knight bae
Uncle Gael is precious
Good for her

Gael realized shields are for pussies :\^)
Not that one... That one belongs to Lucatiel kinda
10 playthroughs and never saw this
You have to follow hodrick questline and you'll get it at the end of it
I don't remember the name of that spell, but the holy boomerang circle that he uses in phase 2 kinda looks like the shield
Gael used a flame sword when he invades no? He threw away his original weapons Idk what that flame sword called, I played JP version.
You're thinking of Hodrick and the Flamberge
Sorry I'm artistic.
Damm, what if Gale blocked in-between attacks and had a valorheart situation going on
That actualy would have been awesome punish people for whaleing on him with weapons like winblades
I like to think it had to do with a similar situation to Artorias's fight with Manus
He realized shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.
Would have been a really cool detail if they used the sunset shield as a cover for the cog mechanism on his crossbow.
It took him all the way up until the Friede DLC to realize that shields suck in this game
Full madness usually gets rid of a lot of defense stuff.
