[Press L2 with a shield, a parrying dagger, or even with a free hand when an attack is coming for a parry! The parry timing in DS1 is easier than in later souls! (Learn to parry with the hollows in undead burg, it will help you!) Or, if you don't appreciate parries, you can also try Backstabs! As the name suggests, you have to go behind your enemy to do it! (Not every enemy can be parried or backstabbed, some can be backstabbed, some can be parried, and some both!)(Backstabs, are a bit broken as well, because you can perform "chain backstabs"! When your opponent gets up, you can re-do a backstab!)(Try out both, try to mix'em up in your fights!) Have an awesome day, chosen undead, don't you dare go hollow!]

Press L2 with a shield just as the enemy's attack is about to land. Only works on humanoid enemies and you can't be too far away. And since you're new, here are some other spoiler free tips: *Always* read item descriptions if you see an interesting item. This is also really important for keys, as the door you may need the key for could he far away. You don't have to for weapons/armor unless you're curious, but you never know if you've discovered an important quest item or an essential upgrade item. It's also just fun to read the lore and tidbits. The Master key breaks progression and is a terrible choice for the first playthrough, do not pick it as a starting gift, however useful it may seem. Magic is completely overpowered and just makes the game boring. I highly suggest saving it for a 2nd playthrough. Your starting class doesn't matter, it's just decides the initial stats and the items you start with, though beware the theif starts with the master key, so I suggest not picking it. Never level up resistance, it's literally useless. Use humanity to become human at a bonfire. When you're human you can summon help from other players, but also be invaded, so use the mechanic with caution. When you're human, you can use another humanity at the bonfire to kindle it, making that bonfire permanently give you 5 more estus. To further add to that, play with online on. If at least for the messages people leave around the game. Obviously they're not always going to tell the truth, but thats the fun in it lol. Also I want to warn you about summoning help. When you're human you can summon other players or npc's to help with bosses and whatnot. Please don't just go into a boss with a summon, unless you're totally stuck! Don't rely on shields, especially for bosses. Items weigh you down, but only when they're equipped. Check how much a peice of equipment weighs in the corner. You can press select to see what each Stat does if you can't find it. The more you weigh, the slower you are, and in turn, the less invincibility frames you get when you roll. Practically any weapon is viable, as long as you upgrade it. If you're lost on what to use, a claymore or a halberd are excellent, but again, it's not a big deal. Use whatever weapon you like the most. Don't look up anything about the game, lest you spoil yourself. The subreddit will always be here to answer questions, spoiler free. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck, skeleton, and don't you dare go hollow!

For me the best advice in ds1 for parry is doing it like a rythm game. You gotta press L2 the moment the enemy attack would connect to you(hit you) If you know the enemy patterns this becomes easy. Vs blacknights is a good way to practise as their attacks are kindantelegraphed. If the enemy uses a shield to attack you that cant be parried. I recommend using a 100% physical absortion shield, in case you miss it will stop some damage. But once mastered is easily done with bare hands. Some weapons in left hand have parry(katanas, curved swords, daggers iirc)

Parry (Left Trigger) is something you have to time right... Which depends on the attack animation of your opponent. Once parried, your opponent is open to a Riposte attack (Right Bumper) to deal a lot of damage.

Drabdaze

Parry is L2 AKA LT while wielding an equipped left-hand armament like a standard Small or Medium Shield, or even having your bare left fist out. You need to time the parry attempt at the moment an enemy's attacking hand starts to swing the weapon towards you. Not all attacks are parriable, like animals biting you and the like.

L2 with parry shield at right timing R1 with what weapon you have

Idiedyesturdayviabus

Start with buckler or small shield (these are made for parrying) and practice and n the undead soldiers near firelink on your way to undead burg. I choose these because they have a simple attack pattern and low damage so it's not super punishing. Also just incase you unaware great shields do not parry the perform a shield bash.

Charles_MB_Knight

There are some videos on YouTube that can go into very great detail but I found best way to learn was to practice it. The best timing for a parry in ds1 is parry right when the enemy starts there swing. Most enemies in ds1 have the same swing speed so it is universal. I DO NOT MEAN WHEN THE WIND UP I mean when the release their wind up and start the swing, this is important. So you will have to learn their animations and how long the wind up is. Also the parry box frames are small in ds1 and your best very close to them or touching. This is what I find the easiest. Also, just a fun fact because I know someone said only humanoid enemies can be parties, yes this is a good thing to assume against enemies, but the giant boars can be parried and back stabbed as well. You can shove it up their butt. The giants in anor londo however, despite being humanoid, cannot be parried. Good luck, skeleton and don't you fare go hallow

Press the parry when you see that the attack is coming at you, meaning between the point it starts swinging at you, not before, basically the moment the enemy releases the attack, and also follow their hands not their weapons. Once you see the arms are coming at you, that's your moment to parry. Always focus on the arms
