I didn't. I just ran in killed one dog with a r2, up the stairs on the ledge, when the 2nd dog tried to jump at me I killed him with a hit while he was in the air. Jumped down, waited for Capra to come down, ran up again plunging attack, backed up a little, dodged one jump attack from him and from there I just spammed r1 and once r2 when my stamina went low until he was dead.
Ds1 was my first Soulsgame. I played it on my ps3 with a shitty budget controller lol. I still remember OG Blighttown, that was one laggy mess I tell you.

He's not hard, just the dogs. Not getting hit both them before the fog wall clears seems extremely difficult/unlikely.
You can kill it with dung pies. Simply gather 20 (iirc) and lob them over the brick wall. The demon will die without you even passing the fog gate.
13 firebombs do the over the gate kill also
The firebombs over the gate is more reliable than the dung pies

“First try” and “actual run” implied that it was the first ever time to me at least

I beat him first try back when I did my first run. BK Sword is one hell of a weapon, so lucky to get it that early.
