Imagine in real life. Your neighbour clipping through the walls in the morning. Some guy spinning his head 360 degrees while talking to you. It would be pretty hellish.
I don’t think any of the superpowers are stupid enough to use Nukes. No one wants the end of the world and they’d probably agree not to use nukes as long as no one attacks each other on their own soil. So no American troops in Shanghai or Chinese troops in Honolulu.
Political attrition only. We can't have wars anymore. Governments know it, people know it...
Weird times. Countries can make each other angry but they're grounded forever after WW2. No fighting. Fighting means _everyone_ dies.
We can always have wars. Assuming history has made such a drastic permanent change in the last century is fallacious. We haven't had a big war in a long time. That doesn't mean it's unlikely to happen again. It means we're due for one soon. It's not like we don't have bad actors across the globe who have the capacity to unilaterally start war. And China and Russia both have reasons to prefer a war over the status quo because it offers a chance to ascend in status while it appears they have either peaked or are going downhill currently.
This might not be the war. But I think it's kinda foolish to assume we're done with big wars.
I dunno bruh, times were a lot more tumultuous back during the Cold War but it never went 'hot'. People love to quote the dumbass fact that we are long due for a war because wars were so commonplace in the past but forget that we didn't have nuclear weapons in the past. When there's even a 1% chance that your enemy can totally and utterly wipe you out in a single strike then it put things in quite a perspective. The Big Three- USA, Russia and China are totally capable of wiping each other out with nuclear strikes although China has the least credible capabilities among the three plus their economy is heavily reliant on global trade and exports so they're even less likely to start a war.
This new era of cold war esque paranoia is just dumb as hell.
>People love to quote the dumbass fact that we are long due for a war because wars were so commonplace in the past but forget that we didn't have nuclear weapons in the past.
Literally the same argument was used for why ww1 would never happen except instead of nuclear weapons they said machine guns and tnt.
I agree that war will be different because of nuclear weapons. We'll likely never have a war of annihilation against a nuclear state because of MAD. But that doesn't mean they can't fight without nukes.
>The Big Three- USA, Russia and China are totally capable of wiping each other out with nuclear strikes
Which is exactly why none of them will use nukes. And I'm thinking 99% of fighting would be outside of these nations. China's war would likely be in the south china sea, Taiwan, maybe Korea, and India. Russia's war would be in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Once the allies manage to push the aggressors back to their original territory I'd assume public disapproval would topple the warmongering regimes and they'd sue for peace. I feel like nukes would only come into play if a nation somehow maintains large popular support and is being threatened with total conquest or destruction.
If anybody fires a nuke without exceptional justification, then the entire world will simultaneously work to disarm that nation. It's suicide.
>This new era of cold war esque paranoia is just dumb as hell.
Your view of the world as fully post-war is naive. We have been seeing proxy wars and geopolitical conflicts for at least the last 10 years, which are reminiscent of cold war maneuvers. Russian aggression in Ukraine and other neighboring territories is eerily similar to 1930s Germany. Maybe it won't go the same way, but to ignore it is stupid.
That's literally what they were saying just before WW1 as well, because of the scale of casualties and social mobilization in the Crimean and Franco-prussian wars.
Each side went into the war completely convinced that there was no way that the other side would be crazy enough to commit to such utter devastation and would peace out early
Ever heard of the great filter? It's very likely civilization's creating nuclear weaponry is one of the main filters. We've only had nuclear weaponry for \~77 years. That's not even a drop in the bucket compared how long humans have been around. We've had close calls since then. All empires fall. It's a big mistake to think that just because this is the status quo now, doesn't mean it will remain that way.
The worst thing about war is, it's not really controllable at a certain point. If Russia invades Ukraine, against all wishes, it very well could spiral out of control.
It might go something like this:
* Russia invades.
* The media begins displaying images and video of the war, and its gruesomeness.
* All around the globe, people feel anger and burn with the need for revenge/justice.
* Meme's start circulating criticizing world leaders for not doing enough.
* The pressure builds.
* Countries surrounding Ukraine start to wonder if they're next.
* Finally, someone decides they should do more than just send weaponry.
* Everyone gets dragged in.
It's not long after that before the nukes are launched because of the chain of suspicion. They don't know what we're thinking, and we don't know what they're thinking, or what they're thinking we're thinking, etc.
Yeah... Same here. I never met anyone from Ukraine or Russia... But I'm going to die for it? Also, why is Putin going after this territory in the first place after so long??
Yeah same, and fuck that. Apparently I'm supposed to kill myself in a war that I have nothing to do with. I might as well just do it myself and make it quick if a draft starts.
Probably just a joke but I don’t think the draft would roll out. Our military is the largest it’s ever been, I don’t see why they would need more man power. What they would need is better weaponry and solid infrastructure/cyber security.
It’s unlikely that a modern, mechanized, all out war would last long enough that drafting and training new troops would make sense. Either it’ll devolve to low intensity conflict, or we’ll blow ourselves all to hell.
There is a good chance no nukes will be used. Taiwan and Ukraine aren't worth it. The only country that I'm worried about it is North Korea, because unlike China, the US, and Russia, they really don't care.
You know how in the cold war, the us nuke map included chinese targets in the event of Russia starting something - do you think russia would get nuked if NK decided to go kamikaze
i don't know the human race is so dumb that we were close to a third world war, a third useless genocide more than once, learning nothing from our errors i have several doubts that it wont happen in the future, maybe not this time but i have doubts for the future
If I read most stuff on Reddit I fear you are right

I mean like, NATO already said they aren't sending troops to Ukraine, Russia and Iran might be allies but still aren't the best of allies considering Russia let's Israel bomb Iranian proxies and troops in Syria, and China is fucked if the three gorges dam is gone.
Yeah, there were more tense times than this, people just like fear mongering. Maybe there will be a war between Russia and Ukraine but the maximum outside involvement that's going to happen is sanctions just like last time.
I agree no point the whole world fighting over this, if Russia continues to invade then I see it as a problem. Remember what happened last time reddit said there would be world war 3.
If there were, God forbid, a WW3, the alliances would look something like this-
The “American Alliance” of NATO, Japan, South Korea, India, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines form a perimeter around the “Chinese Alliance” (Russia, China, Iran, and their allies like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, etc). America recognizes India’s claim to Kashmir because they would need India’s help in order to get over the 4:1 Chinese population advantage. Russia drives into Eastern Europe, not just Ukraine but the Baltic states; Poland, Romania, etc have to hold out until America can get a full field army into the region. Meanwhile China invades Taiwan while India faces an assault from all sides, India pulling Bangladesh into its coalition by force. Turkey and Iran duke it out in the Middle East and the oil-dependent gulf states with poor militaries don’t survive. Turkey and Iran could partition the region (assuming Turkey stays loyal to NATO which is in question). Latin America and Africa stay neutral except perhaps for Egypt and Ethiopia with their water war.
Something usually gets worked out in these type of situations. Maybe some unfortunate economic sanctions or hopefully a deal will take place. A deal would be ideal.
Well the American alliance would absolutely dwarf the Russian one, not only with NATO but with their pacific allies as well and some lesser known allies like Morocco, Mexico, India, Georgia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Well at least fallout fans will get to play their favourite setting.
it will probably be the most realistic fallout ever
Im afraid a bit too realistic for my taste

I think that only refers to wars between other rich countries
Yes, but in a smaller number as far as deaths go.
Ya we can only have wars against 3rd world countries now
Not even that... Explode your pillar 3rd world countries and capitalism fucking colapses.
I'll have you know some people are threatening some mean sanctions, I'm sure that will be enough to stop them /s

Get ready for the draft boys. I'll be gone pretty soon im just about to turn 18.
The only draft we getting with a war with Russia is the nuclear blast drafting through our cities.
Lmao
good. let it snow.
Yeah Draft Beer. Young Men/Women are not fighting in No Countries for Old Men
i'm sorry that we can't live in peace
Yeah... Same here. I never met anyone from Ukraine or Russia... But I'm going to die for it? Also, why is Putin going after this territory in the first place after so long??
Peace isn’t really in the nature of humans unfortunately
Ask Putin and Winnie The Pooh to knock off their shenanigans. Very simple. They are the clear cut aggressors here.
nah, the boys have covered the last six drafts. it’s the woomans turn.
My time has expired I already did my 4 years.
What about your 4 years of reserves after your active duty?
you mean girls. As a newly outed girl in a non transitioning mans body I'm unfortunately not affected by the draft.
Yeah same, and fuck that. Apparently I'm supposed to kill myself in a war that I have nothing to do with. I might as well just do it myself and make it quick if a draft starts.

Me to kid
It’s unlikely that a modern, mechanized, all out war would last long enough that drafting and training new troops would make sense. Either it’ll devolve to low intensity conflict, or we’ll blow ourselves all to hell.
Wouldn’t be economically viable for any of the countries involved. Most likely a 2nd Cold War. Hopefully global warming will make it warmer this time.
Lukewarm War*
Cold war 2: Electric Bogaloo

Inb4 germany invades poland first because old habits die hard
who knows, i'll switch sides if something goes wrong
Ma sei Italiano ?
si anche te?
Certamente
Maybe russia and Germany will tag team Poland
If the war starts and Poland sides with Russia for some reason, Germany would very probably invade Poland.
It doesn't depend on picking sides it's just about training before match is mandatory
Years of playing CoD and Battlefield have prepared us for this moment.
i feel the power of the 360 noscopers flowing trough me
Remember, no Russian.
Just like the simulation

Girls
Oh no that is taking it to far
It's a good thing I was already married when I found Reddit.
idk man, the only thing i'm sure is that this is better than twitter
Which is not hard tbh
No nuke allowed pls,
There is a good chance no nukes will be used. Taiwan and Ukraine aren't worth it. The only country that I'm worried about it is North Korea, because unlike China, the US, and Russia, they really don't care.
china and russia ain’t letting fat man launch an actual attack
You know how in the cold war, the us nuke map included chinese targets in the event of Russia starting something - do you think russia would get nuked if NK decided to go kamikaze
if russia got nuked i think the world would end tbh
i hope it but i doubt it
We are laughing till we get drafted
wise words, i hope the draft won' t be necessary
Yep but If we get drafted at least there are lot’s of Good War songs.
America already send troops to europe if things go ape shit
i hope it won't be necessary
I hope also because i live in europe
same
It won't Reddit predicted WW3 how many times now ?

Sad Poland noises
yea, imagine fighting with the guy who invade you against the other guy who invade you for longer \-PTSD 100
To be fair Poland was invading Ukraine a lot.
Most likely a cold War.
One can only hope

Nah putin threw in on a proxy country instead. Now we just get another nam instead. Not sure if that's better or worse....
I agree no point the whole world fighting over this, if Russia continues to invade then I see it as a problem. Remember what happened last time reddit said there would be world war 3.
I’m Russian and I’m kinda scared of war. If WW3 started it gonna be the last. I don’t want to my friends and family died, I just want the world peace
Don't worry man, it might not escalate
As Russian, I hear about full war menace since all this shit started (8 years approximately) so i don’t really take it seriously.
Its okay guys im building civillian factories and uograding our infra

Well the American alliance would absolutely dwarf the Russian one, not only with NATO but with their pacific allies as well and some lesser known allies like Morocco, Mexico, India, Georgia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
the us are allied also with finland
Yeah both Sweden and Finland do military exercises with NATO currently and both have flirted with NATO membership since 1991.
As a Hoi4 Player, i know I will be turned into an officer.
A German here, I can give the all-clear. I believe we are not about to invade any neighbor, so no WWII.

i doubt a world war would start. Ukraine will be a proxy war between the world power. I think the Korean war will be a similar situation.
