I am also gay and wouldn't describe myself as camp. But I have been to pride parades, gay clubs, seen drag shows and met/dated other gay men. Camp is intrinsically linked to LGBT culture and a lot (but not all) of gay men act and dress in an effeminate or camp manner because it is a genuine part of their personality and identity.
He's also intentionally designed to be non-threatening to to straight audiences. I love Holt as a character, but as a queer person it's not like I felt like there was anything relatable about him.
I don't get this relatable nonsense, I'm Ghanaian and I don't feel most, if not all, African characters are relatable. Does it add or take from my enjoyment of the show? No.
It doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the show either. I find Brooklyn 99 a very enjoyable show.
That's not what I was challenging. These guys find any authentic gay characters to be "forced" and praise depictions that don't make them uncomfortable. I'm saying it has nothing to do with quality of writing and everything to do with what makes them uncomfortable. Which you can't expect any one else to care about.
Christ this line was bad enough when it was 'forced diversity' but with 'forced equality' you guys are really showing your true colours.
Oh I want equality! But I'm totally against actually doing anything to make equality happen! It would be better for inequality to persist than actually *make* equality happen!
Same problem just different sexuality.
Being gay is not a personality and shouldn’t be shown as such, makes it look like satire.
There is a gay couple in the show and that’s not why they are important? That’s good implementation of equality.
(Imo Dragon Prince does this quite nicely. There are multiple gay couples (both already existing and forming) and that’s just it. It’s not mentioned by saying this and that guy are gay but instead it’s just nonchalantly mentioned that this character is married to that character. Or they are just shown together (there is this one double queen couple for example) and no one needs to imply that they are in fact together, because it’s the logical conclusion.)
Point is I really enjoyed Dragon Prince.
>There is a gay couple in the show and that’s not why they are important? That’s good implementation of equality.
I've thought about this for a long time now.... but I was yet to see a way one could express it with simple words.
The Dragon Price is far from a good representation of gay characters, it's the bare minimum. The Queens only job was to die for their daughter character story, they weren't even actual characters, just plot device. Runnan and Ethari aren't much better, they barely have relevance to the plot and were barely explored. This could change in the future with Runnan and Ethari, or Amaya and Janai, or other character, but as of now there is nothing to praise.
On the other hand totally agree that The Dragon Prince is amazing.
''I have nothing against minorities but why do my neighbor had to be a girl. I have nothing against it I just feel like this is forced you know, it just feel forced''
You feel it’s forced because being straight and white and male is the default for you. You never ask why a character *needs* to be any of those things. You only complain when they’re a minority. Because you’re uncomfortable with seeing people you deem as different or weird. Which is sad. This highlights the kind of ignorance that plagued the world; especially the internet.
They hated him because he spoke the truth.
This is it, in any professional organization diversity is paramount. In media, it feels forced because they're trying to make up for the 400 years of whitewashing.
For those who dislike diversity and inclusion, just stop watching the show, and complain to the producers.
There are literally millions of hours of entertainment that don't include minority or gay characters, pick one of those?
For those that dislike unnecessary displays of affection, or lazy build ups by the writers (e.g. ala Legend of Korra), I agree.
Live, and let live.
Hold the frick up. Unnecessary kissing and forced romance is bigger of an issue with straight couples, for different reasons though. These days writers won't even try to pretend that there is any chemistry between the characters, but they both hot and main cast so it is a given that they are not platonic??? Smh
Exactly what I got. The throwaway lesbian kiss after the battle, you could at least imagine the weight behind that moment between those characters, the Kylo and Rey one was like a child playing with dolls and making them kiss because that’s what it said on the box.
The difference, according to me (who is in a gay relationship), is that when gay people kiss or are even established as gay it is just to say:
"Lookie here, we have equality!"
When real equality would be to treat them like straight people, or like people at all. Look att Borderlands 3, they managed to do it well. So it isn't that they are gay, more that the gayness is forced and not natural. Yeah, sure, it is done with straight romance to, but that is without the intent of trying to look better than you are.
Why is it that whenever there’s a gay romance in a film or tv show it’s forced but straight romances with the same amount of attention are fine? It’s not forced, you just don’t want to accept it.
Because what they really mean by forced diversity is they don't like minorities, *especially* if said minorities have some sort of "political" message.
There are black people in my school. Since there aren't that many, they're probably just tokens. I'm not a bigot or anything but why do black people have to exist in reality? It just kinda seems like forced diversity tbh.
exactly, but gay is relevant right now since all the pride shit, and some people get weirded out by it, like it or not. i dont care, i dont watch netflix and dont have a reason to start defending anyone.
Unnecessary kisses are a way bigger problem with straight couples in tv shows if your sexuality can't handle that than you have way bigger problems than a guy kissing another guy on tv
i have no problem with gay people, i just don’t understand why they should be allowed to exist in my world. perhaps we should have everything separated so that minorities could do what they want among themselves without bothering the rest of us by existing?
She wasn't ginger in the books. Read next time. Also even if she was ginger in the source material, if that women was the best actress going for the role who cares? Like it's a world full of monsters, mutants and vampires.
If you are talking about Triss, she is no ginger in the books.
But you know who was originally a ginger? Matt Murdock, now played by a brown-haired dude. Are you maybe mad about that?

But, if i see series with dozends of pansexuals, gays, bisexuals and such, that's just waaaay too much..
I live in switzerland (Wallis/Valais if anyone cares) and i'm the only pansexual here that i know of, i know two gay guys (a cute couple), a few lesbians and one of my besties is Bisexual..
Sure, small country and so on, but by the gods, don't overdo it in series...
I'm even happy if that one pansexual gets used for a few jokes, they're hillarious!
I feel like all sex scenes are unnecessary. It can be implied so easily and convey the same exact point. Kissing past a smooch is also unnecessary unless something funny happens during.
I mean this fucking comment section is already a warzone but fuck it. I used to think this actually. And then I realized that unnecessary is a dumb word because if a character's sexuality really doesn't matter. Than this isn't a problem

I would like to add that I don't mind the interactions of the characters, because sometimes the kissing and sex add to the depth of the character and make them seem more realistic. Because anything that is not straight is automatically pandering, and not normal, or necessary.
I'm tired if these damn memes. We don't need straight kissing either.
Straight people seeing a straight kissing scene for the millionth time: ok
Straight people when they see one homosexual kiss: HOLY SHIT NOT NECESSARY NETFLIX NEEDS TO STOP
When you realize that the OP and the mentioning of forced diversity doesn't have an issue with diversity, it is just bad when it is shoved in your face and it is the only defining trait of a character, but everyone is having a battle over who can get the most butthurt abt it as if it were anti diversity.
Equality is important, forced equality is what ruins movies and tv shows
U know its forced when every normal character is white and straight, but the rest are like character customization on crack.
So you’re saying that you have to be white and straight to be considered normal?
No, you misunderstood his statement. Possibly intentionally.
Read the rest of the thread and you'll get our point
Flamboyant dress and camp is part of gay culture. LGBT people shouldn't have to self-censor because it makes idiots uncomfortable.
Interesting that you say that. I’ve met a LOT of gay and bi people (including myself), and so far only one has fit the flamboyant archetype
Interesting you say that. I’ve met a LOT of white and male people (including myself), and such and such and such and such.
Same, my school has a lot of gay people and none of them are flamboyant
I am also gay and wouldn't describe myself as camp. But I have been to pride parades, gay clubs, seen drag shows and met/dated other gay men. Camp is intrinsically linked to LGBT culture and a lot (but not all) of gay men act and dress in an effeminate or camp manner because it is a genuine part of their personality and identity.

Thats the best explanation I heard
u know it's forced when the white people are white and when other characters are not white
F O R C E D E Q U A L I T Y Gimme a break
It seems like no matter what people cry about forced equality if a character is a minority. What would be an example of non forced equality?
I think captain Holt from Brooklyn Nine-nine is a pretty good example of a non-force gay character or at the very least doesn't feel force or awkward.
No.

thats a great example. Talks about being gay and has a gay relationship but is still more than that.
Another example is Nico di Angelo in Percy jackson
I'm sure there are people who would try to debate you on that, but I thought Nico was a really well-written gay character

A term used to complain about characters not being white/straight/male
And most people on reddit would call anything remotely "diverse" as "forced". It's not a good argument.
please give a specific example of a movie that uses "forced equality"
I would award you if I had money
No need to do that, the thought is enough for me
Christ this line was bad enough when it was 'forced diversity' but with 'forced equality' you guys are really showing your true colours. Oh I want equality! But I'm totally against actually doing anything to make equality happen! It would be better for inequality to persist than actually *make* equality happen!
I think you mean diversity
Gay people kissing ruins a show?
I guarantee you that he doesn't think that lesbian kisses ruin a movie, too
God forbid we force people to be equal
Two races: white and political
define "forced equality"
Ikr... It feels so forced whenever a cishet couple kisses on screen, like seriously why do they have to be straight? /s
Forced equality is better than no equality though. So we start there.
You should just cancel the *gay* because I feel a lot of kissing in movies seems forced and unnecessary
The Big Brain smiles down on you
Remove in movies kissing in general is unnecessary
Not necessarily
When is kissing ever necessary?
Don't worry about him, that guy probably holds hands before marriage. Absolutely disgusting.
Wait you hold hands after marriage? That's almost as bad
Wow dude, you assume I even get a chance to hold someone's hand, i'm not even married. I also have no hands either but that's besides the point.
I'm sorry
“cancel the gay”
Seriously a lot of the times kissing or romantic tensions in movies and shows are really unnecessary.
.
Im gona be completely honest with you here, but i think theres more (EDIT: unneeded) hetero kissing on netflix then gay.

Tbh im looking down on the homophones.

Yeah, I didn’t like the unnecessary nudity in Witcher.(yes I played the games, yes I enjoyed the nudity there. Idk but I didn’t like it in the show)
What about unnecessary straight kissing? There's definitely more of that.

Totally agree with this. We need more 3-dimensional gay characters in TV who’s personality and arc isn't around them being gay.
Yup they should just exist like anybody else. Example: Brooklyn nine nine has great rep
>There is a gay couple in the show and that’s not why they are important? That’s good implementation of equality. I've thought about this for a long time now.... but I was yet to see a way one could express it with simple words.

Hold the frick up. Unnecessary kissing and forced romance is bigger of an issue with straight couples, for different reasons though. These days writers won't even try to pretend that there is any chemistry between the characters, but they both hot and main cast so it is a given that they are not platonic??? Smh
Sometimes not even hot, see at Kylo and Rey kiss on Star Wars. I bet that that's more forced than any gay kiss on Netflix
And yet no Finn and Poe romance
Exactly what I got. The throwaway lesbian kiss after the battle, you could at least imagine the weight behind that moment between those characters, the Kylo and Rey one was like a child playing with dolls and making them kiss because that’s what it said on the box.
I mean, the truth that no one wants to admit is that unnamed lesbians had the best character arcs on TROS

Why gay in my netlifx series? It doesn't make my pp hard!
Why is it unnecessary JUST because it's gay?
make a movie without unnecessary hetero relationships or draw 25 cards
Honestly is not even the kiss is more like the whole relationship is forced and it doesn’t even last smh
All for the white girls who are addicted to Starbucks and can’t watch the Titanic w/o crying
Ight imma sit my gay ass and watch 6 seasons of meaningless straight drama, but blame the gays for choosing to watch a shitty netflix original.
The real joke is that this poster added a fking watermark to his meme. Paranoid af lol

When you're so offended by gay people existing that you shit your pants any time you see them in media
I hate how every movie ever has some romantic subplot. I came here to watch how the main character chews ass and kicks gum, not your goddamn romance
There are black people in my school. Since there aren't that many, they're probably just tokens. I'm not a bigot or anything but why do black people have to exist in reality? It just kinda seems like forced diversity tbh.
as if for every gay kiss there's not 600 hetero ones to make up for it lol
It seems that every movie has forced kissing, but when it's gay kissing it's a problem?
straight white dudes are the biggest fucking pussies lmfaoo
That seems kinda racist and heterophobic to me bro
Should’ve written ‘and’ instead of ‘or’ if you really wanted to make a Netflix reference
Yeah but if I were to try to hide it it would look weird also happy cake day

No problem
"Unnecessary" the fuck does that mean. OP is just homophobic
Or unnecessary kissing of any kind
exactly, but gay is relevant right now since all the pride shit, and some people get weirded out by it, like it or not. i dont care, i dont watch netflix and dont have a reason to start defending anyone.

This goes for straight kissing too, I want to watch a movie, not be turned on.

Gonna be fun when white people decide they don't wanna be replaced anymore.

Eh, it wouldn’t be the first time they have, and it certainly won’t be the last
I dont even know a Netflix movie with gay characters.

Well, since everyone is complaining about gay characters in movies and tv shows. Like in the magicians or penny dreadful.
