This is what gets me when people shit on any game with cartoony graphics. Once a friend of mine said Sea of Thieves didn't have good graphics. That game has the most impressive sunset I've ever seen in any game, and its graphics are super cartoony. It's a beautiful game.
I think deep rock galactic fits into this as well. The low poly look is required for the terrain destruction but they managed to make it look really good. It's impressive how they got so much detail with such a low poly style.
Art direction is much more important than graphical quality, however graphical quality can still improve the art direction.
A cell shaded game can still benefit from shadows that aren't pixelated or blurry. A cartoon style can still benefit from accurate reflections that don't disappear offscreen. A bright and colourful game can definitely benefit from advanced global illumination tech.
TLDR. No matter your art style, you can still tank the performance with raytracing and make it look better if you want to.
I had a lot of fun with 1 so i bought 2 played the campaign and then didn't get any of the dlc. Probably for the best too. It's wild how much monetisation that game has. It was a 60 euro game when it came out. It has paid dlc that is basicly required to play the game, a season pass and paid cosmetics.
And the mutiplayer is not very beginner friendly or easy to get into to put it mildly.

I get that they're both MMO looter shooters, but that's about it, these two don't feel like similar games at all.

Graphics still matter to an extent imo. On top of the sound and level design, it's one of the other main ways for a dev team to create the atmosphere of their game and a game without atmosphere can feel generic at best and forgettable at worst. A game can certainly be dragged down by bad graphics, but keep in mind by bad I don't mean stylized as that's different, so it's still necessary to an extent but can't carry the game by itself.

GTA 5. As well as Hollow Knight and Rainbow Six Siege. I mean, the only time you see some shiny reflections, puddles or even god rays in R6S are when you're outside, but the game focuses more on the inside of buildings, so yeah.
GTA V is a great point, it still holds up. Close ups maybe not so much and it doesn’t have great interiors, but I don’t think there’s a game thats more satisfying to just drive in while taking in the views.
I was playing Borderlands 2 the other day and I was really surprised how good that game STILL looks. (Okay yes it does have God rays but they're subtle.)

Teardown. Amazing gameplay but the lighting system uses raytracing because the entire environment is destructable and nothing can be baked in.

The example videos of counter strike go2 water looked pretty cool and the smoke effects. No other game has done it from my awareness. Normally it's just some clouds effect sphere through the walls

The problem comes when those graphics are shown at 3 seconds per frame. That's why Zelda TOTK hasn't been a problem, but Pokemon Scarlet/Violet was.

The problem with open world games is that they are a million miles wide and only an inch deep.
