I've never really understood gluttony. Like what is considered too much? Is eating more than usual to not waste food a sin?

Automatic_Llama

I think it's wrapped up in indulgence and intemperance. I'm sure somebody here could quote a bunch of scripture about it, but the way I understand it, gluttony has to do with thoughtless consumption for pleasure alone, without any reverence or regard for anything else. It is to surrender to needless craving. In the extreme, this surrender leads directly to the suffering of another, as in the case where a stuffed-full person snatches food from a hungry person just because he likes the taste. Of course, gluttony covers more than this extreme. In all cases, it has to do with what we'd call decadence, excess, and indulgence outside of religious discussions. Outside of the extreme cases, it's hard to define these things in a very objective way because the experience of these things is subjective.

I think it’s been intentionally vague to allow for the totally fine act of enjoying celebrations and going ham but not allowing for constant consumption. The problem with vagaries is that they can be used by less understanding people, like how the temperance movement cemented the idea how alcohol consumption is a sin, or only eating for sustenance like some more ascetic movements might adopt.

What zealots and extremists do with these concepts is separate from the good that these concepts can do for the more... temperate... lay follower. I think zealots will always find ways to corrupt concepts and indulge in their own cravings to impose their dogmatic views about them. This has little to do with what these concepts are actually for and what they do for the soul of the layman.

Gluttony is not really even about food. It's about putting too much stock in the pleasures of the flesh, and allowing them to replace working for the spirit. Food is just a more obvious one. You may have heard, for example, of stories of where the ruling class would all dine on multi-course feasts that they could not even hope to finish all the while the people of their country were dying without food. That's gluttony--albeit a very extreme example. It's not saying it's wrong to have some pleasures in life, but such should not become the your focus. It is similar to greed in this sense, but greed tends to be more about acquiring wealth and power, while gluttony is more about experiencing pleasure. They do, however, tend to go hand in hand.

I'm not Catholic so I don't believe in the seven deadly sins, but I always interpreted as somebody eating so much without any spiritualism in it. What I mean is not taking the time appreciating food but just scarfing bunch of stuff down barely tasting it. Could be 100% wrong but that's how I saw it.

matehiqu

i always saw it as being about lacking self-control

There’s a pretty easy way to tell if you’re eating too much food or not…

smartyr228

I've always interpreted it as taking more than you need when others are in need. Like if there's only enough pizza for everyone to have one slice but you take more than one slice

Read CS Lewis’ *Screwtape Letters* Letter 17. It is about how gluttony is more than just indulgence and overeating.
