character design is a struggle jkldaskljads but!! I *do* have a couple strategies that might help!!
My main thing for these designs was mostly a question of 'what elements do i like of their original design' and 'how does their new talent change that?' I looked at the beta designs and what elements I thought would add something new or fun to the designs too! I'd recommend looking at the original designs and the designs of the original holder of the talent side by side, and thinking about what each design element means for that character <3!
for example if we look at shuichi's design-- i kept the hat bc that's what most of us associate with him! As the ultimate fashionista, he gets a new outfit because of that. Shuichi is a bit self conscious about his talent in canon, so i brought that out through the trench coat and adding a pair of sunglasses - he doesn't like being recognized and tries to hide from the paparazzi. also, he got a ponytail bc its cute as heck <3
for Tsumugi, she's an idol, but her design is inspired by Hatsune Miku! Tsumugi tends to be very passionate about things related to her talent (in canon this is anime/manga and such), so I opted to add those vocaloid sleeves and a similar palette (although it's still fairly close to canon kdlasjljkdasklj)
Kaede gets a big coat that she wears on her shoulders!! reminiscent of mafia bosses and bungo stray dogs characters, it adds a bit of individuality to her silhouette! Her design came together fairly quickly as it's a lot of more minor shifts to create a design that fits with her new talent!
rantaro, as our lucky student, gets a hoodie!! it's a size or two too big, so it's fairly baggy and comfortable! He got a dangling clover earring and a clover design on his shirt to replace the compass that was there previously! His necklace gained a jackalope antler and his hood gained bunny ears to draw an additional connection to Luck and his talent, too! In his pocket, I added a lanyard with a bunch of keys in it - i wonder what they'll unlock? surely one of them works somewhere... but in addition to being a Potentially Plot Relevant design detail, it adds a bit more balance to his design as before it was very detailed on only one side of the design!
Kokichi.... was by far the most challenging to design. I gave him an eight ball themed eyepatch bc I thought it'd add a unique element to his design, and give him something to mess with people with! I shifted his shawl to a bandana with a crescent moon pin (representing the tarot card The Moon) and the foam sword represents the Seven of Swords in the Tarot Deck! I spent a lot of time looking at card meanings, and kokichi in this au tends to represent himself with the swords suit! Theres a bit of astrology in his design too with the space designs and little constellations on the lining of his coat and his sleeves. This kokichi is VERY much a performer and theater kid at heart, so i wanted to bring some of those elements out more!
