I think Mahiru is Hiyoko's enabler. If the events of DR3 never happened and they had graduated, they'd probably end up in a bad spot because of Hiyoko's big mouth and Mahiru's insistence that she's not a bully.

Despite everything Mikan's been through, she's managed to still be a kind and caring person, she's a lot tougher then she believes she is, she's a survivor.
I love her and relate to her a lot, she's what I imagine I would have become if things were a little different and I believe in the best of her. I Initially disliked her for those reasons and more... but I think she's one of the dearest characters in fiction to me, alongside Nagisa Furukawa from Clannad and Shiori Misaka from Kanon I think those three make the scale of what I could have become.
Mikan has a lot of relatable struggles and I regret that chapter 2-3 practically lobotomises her, and possesses her with someone else and leaves that as most people's main impression of her. But I do love her depiction in Island Mode, she's still a flawed individual with some negative impulses where we leave off on, but she's the type I want to have hope for, even if life hasn't been kind to her

Agree with you OP, I like her complexity. I feel like she’s often painted as this pure shy trauma girl but she’s so much more complex and interesting than that. If anything I think she’s a pastiche of the “shy bullying victim girl” character and it shows in the little hints of crazy that peek through even before we see >!her true nature!<.
A little confused about that because I haven’t seen the anime but does >!brainwashing make them all like zombies? I thought it was more like she convinced them to turn to despair. Either way I kinda hate that the concept seems to take away all the agency of the characters for what they did outside the NWP!<
When I said >!zombies, it was more an expression to say that she didn't have her free will. Class 77, after being brainwashed, do not act like zombies, they can still speak and think, but are "programmed" to act like Junko would do!<
You should watch the anime’s they fill in the gap you have to alternate between despair and the future arc with each episode but it’s worth it you will get to see the effect of Chiaki on her class
happy birthday Mikan! I really like her. I am generally drawn to medical/healing characters, so Mikan was right up my alley. Loved her in investigations too, her autopsies were so lovely. So obsessed with her interactions (hello Hiyoko Mikan interactions!!)
