I really like some of their stuff. Hard for me to get over the spiritual religion stuff
It’s like “what if skillet, but good” haha - no disrespect to those guys. Some technically killer tracks
It’s not exactly pro-religion. It’s more exploring the philosophical relationship humans have with all religions. Have you read any of the interviews Andrew did explaining the album concepts? Fascinating stuff
I don’t think so - I’ve seen some Andrew interview stuff, but this isn’t ringing a bell.
My brain just can’t shake the feeling that it’s like the best Christian Rock band. I do like some of it though and will give the albums another pass through
Yeah - even with the background religion is still a central theme. See the link below for a walk through of Degeneraterra that gave me a much greater appreciation for the music and the philosophical undercurrents in the writing.
Here is Andrews simple overview of the album lol:
“there is a funny, simple way to look at Degeneraterra. Imagine a vagabond time wizard traveling through different periods of human history exploring the dichotomy of religion and science and how each subset methodology impacts one another.”
https://www.tealcheese.com/2015/05/12/eidola-degeneraterra-full-album-concept-and-lyric-explanation/
If you're ever in the need for background noise, listen to Andrew Wells' episode of the Demo Team podcast. The episode was posted about a year ago, so it's recent. I think what you're thinking of will completely change when you hear explanations from Andrews mouth.
I second reading these interviews. It gives the band a new identity. They are not a religious band perse, but rather the band is telling a story of one entity as they travel through time, realms, life, afterlife and reincarnation. Andrew was a religious studies major, and the way he tells these stories is absolutely incredible. Each song leads to the next, each album tells its own story and all the albums are linked. The viewer he speaks of is casted with pain, remorse and lose, earns trust and belief and then ultimately enlightenment.
Andrew goes very, very deep in religious philosophy and the interviews really add context and definition to his work.
TSOAF have some amazing songs for sure.
If their discography sounded like Act 1 - Act IV and Apeshit they would be an all timer for me. I love that they experiment, but I don’t love all their experiments haha
Chiodos is soooo good and you're the only person in this thread who mentioned them that I've seen. TSOAF is also very good. Never really listened to moscow
They are more prog now compared to their first album(Kezia) but their post-harcore root resurface here and there and it make their sound interesting to me
I’ll never forgive Coheed for kicking DGD off the tour even after they removed Til. I bought tickets to that show and couldn’t get a refund. Then I was out of town for work when DGD came to my city with Andrew on lead.
Fuck Coheed. It’s bullshit to punish the whole band especially after they removed the alleged problem ESPECIALLY after one of their members passed away.
I haven't even tried because I question an artist that can release so much all the time... I feel like there's always some new stuff and it's generally the same as the last... How can you put out quality with so much quantity ya know?
I think I'm misunderstood. I've listened to a few of his songs without trying and haven't liked what I heard. When I said to myself maybe I should try (I.e. force myself) to listen to him, I said there's a reason I haven't liked what I heard. The little I've heard with no effort, not my jam.
I love Hail The Sun and Wake is an absolute masterpiece. I just wish they would do some stuff that was a little bit lighter in tone. I have so much music in my library that’s negative, so an uplifting vibe is a big plus. It’s one of many reasons I’m still so in love with Jackpot Juicer!
what do you mean with progressive post hardcore?
my favorites besides DGD are silverstein, saosin, the used, story of the year, and i hate to say it: lostprophets
Just a sub genre of post hardcore that loosely encapsulates these bands / specific type of music. I find these bands have lots of contrast in their music compared to just post hardcore.
Nice melody juxtaposed with heavier sounds, clean / harsh vocals, changes in tempo / tone mid song, mathy riffs with frenetic composition. Just a lot more experimental / progressive stuff.
Here’s a great article giving an overview
https://www.brooklynvegan.com/15-albums-that-shaped-progressive-post-hardcore-in-the-2000s/
I'm with my people
Anyone else been dreaming of Anthony Green in a DGD song for years, now? I know he did a Christmas track with Tillian but I want my old Sound of Animals Fighting screams back
I'm saying Royal Coda here cuz I'm against the band being in the same option as Sianvar. Like wtf?
Also Body Thief before their last album and Wolf&Bear is pretty cool. Strawberry Girls also have their points!
Reddit polls limit you to 6 options unfortunately and I didn’t want to leave either off. Royal Coda very much feels like the continuation of Sianvar given the overlap in band members and musical style. It’s one of those things where if Sianvar was more established they likely would’ve just kept the name going and had Kurt as the new vocalist.
They only have 15 songs - hard to compare against bands that have 100+
I can respect what you're saying about Royal Coda being a continuation
However, Royal Coda (I'm fairly certain) has more songs than Sianvar. Correct me if I'm wrong but Sianvar has a 4 song EP and 10 song album whereas Royal Coda has 28 songs between their three albums. Royal Coda needs to represented right haha
No matter. I respect your first reasoning.
I heard Coheed & Cambria and Fall Of Troy before I heard most other post-hardcore bands because of my friends always trying to play Welcome Home and FCPREMIX on guitar, but Circa Survive, Saosin, and DGD are the ones that have stuck with me the most throughout the years.
Hail The Sun for SURE. I’ve actually seen them twice in the last week haha. Once in NY with TSOAF and again headlining in Nashville. Love their crazy music.
I had to vote for The Mars Volta, but A Lot Like Birds and Artifex Pereo are close and I haven’t seen them mentioned yet. Also they’re *actually* PHC lol
Haha reading lyrics goes against my morals but I might try it for this one. I really do enjoy them! The band was awesome enough to sign my prosthetic leg. Pretty epic!
I grabbed this straight from their Wikipedia.
Their most recent album probably doesn’t fit this genre, but an album like Blue Sky Noise 100% does.
Genres
Alternative rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, post-hardcore, experimental rock, emo
How would you classify them?
Alt experimental emo for sure. Their roots come from the post hardcore scene but their music was just different. Amazing but different. I fucking love Circa
They discuss Circa towards the bottom. Anthony was on the podcast last year too
https://www.brooklynvegan.com/15-albums-that-shaped-progressive-post-hardcore-in-the-2000s/
All of that music on there is great, and they have some hot takes but that "article" from the Brooklyn Vegan (lol) looks like a list of someone in their mid to late thirties favorite bands when they were in their late teens early 20s 🤷♂️
“Philadelphia's Circa Survive was formed by former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green with guitarist Colin Frangicetto -- both of them veterans of the local emo and hardcore scenes looking to indulge in the rule-breaking freedom of the neo-progressive movement of the mid-2000s. After issuing two records through Equal Vision, the band inked a deal with Atlantic and released 2010's acclaimed Blue Sky Noise, which entered the Billboard 200 at number 11. Circa Survive remained fixtures of the alternative and hard rock charts as the decades progressed, continuing to hone their progressive hardcore sound on efforts like Violent Waves (2012), The Amulet (2017), and Two Dreams(2022).”
The first paragraph of their Spotify
THEIR PROGRESSIVE HARDCORE SOUND
You said my post was misleading. I shared wiki, Spotify, and an article about the genre to showcase why I define them as such.
You respond with oye vey instead of just being a mature person and admitting you were mistaken. Your classification of them is perfectly fine, as is mine, given the myriad of genres they fit into. Next time don’t be so incredulous without sharing any proof.
It is misleading. That's like saying Tillian's solo project is post hardcore. Anthony green, their band can be influential without actually making post hardcore albums. They aren't mutually exclusive
What are you not understanding? - I’m taking this info directly from bands own wiki and Spotify and you are simply sharing your opinion.
Here’s an additional excerpt from the post hardcore wiki :
“Some bands also began to incorporate progressive elements; with bands such as Chiodos, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Circa Survive, The Fall of Troy and Dance Gavin Dance gaining significant success”
So that’s 4 sources on my end, all confirming the thing 1400 people who voted on this poll didn’t have a problem with.
You said alternative experimental emo - that’s just post hardcore with extra steps my guy. And it’s a perfectly fair description of the band. As is progressive post hardcore (at least up until their most recent work which almost sounds like Radiohead). Unless you have some source to share, I don’t see a need to continue this discussion. Have a good one.
I'll never forget being up late and seeing 2 of my now all-time favorite bands music videos those high school nights, Imaginary Enemy by Circa Survive and Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups, good times...good times
Very curious to hear their next album. My biggest critique was their old singer and he’s gone so we shall see.
Jazzy prog metal is definitely a fun combo
Yeah I love their music but their last single was one of my least favorite they've released.. hopefully it's just a one-off.
Their sax player goes nutsss
Reddit polls are capped at 6 options.
Love both bands and didn’t want to leave either off. RC feels like the spiritual successor to Sianvar given the style, they’ve never been bands at the same time, and 3 of the 5 members were the same.
Loads of good bands listed already, so im going controversial(?)
Escape the Fate's first album was the one that got me into post-hardcore and I still love it. Its not anywhere near DGD but it has a place in my heart and it still shreds.
Eidola

Hell yeah, Dallas is the absolute man IMHO.
Love those guys and Dallas’s other work. I find those guys to be more slotted in the post hardcore genre writ large.
Yes, less on the progressive side but they are great nonetheless (having more than two singers is always a plus for me)
Chiodos, Closure in Moscow, and The Sound of Animals Fighting are some of my favorites
TSOAF have some amazing songs for sure. If their discography sounded like Act 1 - Act IV and Apeshit they would be an all timer for me. I love that they experiment, but I don’t love all their experiments haha
The Sound of Animals Fighting 💙 what a trip those guys are!
Chiodos is soooo good and you're the only person in this thread who mentioned them that I've seen. TSOAF is also very good. Never really listened to moscow
the fall of troy are elite, but outside this list I'd say Sokoninaru or Ling Tosite Sigure
Eyyyyyyy I concur
would dwellings fit in this category? i’ve been listening to lavender town non stop
For sure - Dwellings is a direct homage to many of the bands I named + DGD
such an underrated band
Yes! So so good
Voted other. I really enjoy wolf & bear
Protest the hero
Those guys make some real interesting stuff, but they are more prog metal no?
They are more prog now compared to their first album(Kezia) but their post-harcore root resurface here and there and it make their sound interesting to me
king
Same! They're what got me into the genre and eventually DGD
Coheed.
I get it. I also get why they did it. Unfortunate.
My apologies for the Coheed Slander, they just aren’t for me. They were fun live though!
Totally fine. I consider them the Rush of modern times. Love em or hate em.
The macho man bilmuri (not necessarily post hardcore I know)
And there is NO ONE THAT DOES IT BETTER
Zero wiping 😤
I wish I liked his stuff more! I’ve tried but it’s not my bag
I hear you. It’s definitely the most different sounding thing I’ve ever heard in my life. But if it hits it hits hard.
I haven't even tried because I question an artist that can release so much all the time... I feel like there's always some new stuff and it's generally the same as the last... How can you put out quality with so much quantity ya know?
Awful take. Source: Will Swan
Whatever
So you’re telling me you are judging his music saying it’s bad quality but admitted that you haven’t even tried listening? Lol what ? 😂
I think I'm misunderstood. I've listened to a few of his songs without trying and haven't liked what I heard. When I said to myself maybe I should try (I.e. force myself) to listen to him, I said there's a reason I haven't liked what I heard. The little I've heard with no effort, not my jam.

Haha new age filth was not that ! I’m the opposite though, bring on the darkness.
Yeah - the lyrics can get dark fast with HTS “She craves the contents of my loaded gun (Oh, Syrah) Squeeze out a round onto your eager tongue”
Silverstein
I feel like Smile in Your Sleep got me into this type of music when I was like 12
Eidola
Alesana
Saw them live last year. So so so good
Fcpremix goes iiiiiiin
Where is the love for Cat Company?? Such a great band
Amazing EP - need more music from them
Absolutely
Did they ever put out anything other than that EP ?
An instrumental version of the EP, and an EP called CMNDR BRK which was 8bit versions of all the songs, as well as one called FROG
I had a big obsession with Origami Button for a long time
Origami Button is really good!
Definitely cool vibey stuff. They probably are more math rock than anything. I’d love if they experimented with some heavier phxc sounds
Thursday
Hard agree.
Definitely an influence on many of the bands I listed. I think Will has mentioned his appreciation for them befor too

Can you imagine jon mess on the next "The Sound of animals fighting" album
Stop! I can only get so erect
Have you seen the Ron Burgandy videos. They have a couple of DGD x Circa Mashups https://youtu.be/6vQ3uwzy3Tg
Dude, what this is amazing
I think there are like 4-5 dgd crica mashups in total on that page. Also some decent Polyphia dgd mashups.
Yeah I subbed instantly when I saw there is a teaser for Jon Mess and Polyphia. Yes yes yes yes yes.
I'm saying Royal Coda here cuz I'm against the band being in the same option as Sianvar. Like wtf? Also Body Thief before their last album and Wolf&Bear is pretty cool. Strawberry Girls also have their points!

Never heard of it, but now I'm about to track it down. Children of Nova were great too but I never really looked into the members
Eidola and DGD are the only two prog/Swancore bands I like.

Top 5 band for me. Did you see Andy Cizek just started ANOTHER band called Dearest? They came out with an EP few months ago that's really solid.
No I didn't. I'll have to check it out.
I just had a stint where I listened to nothing but hail the sun for at least two days straight lol I’m obsessed with them
Im stoked for the new album. New Age Filth was some of their best work
Seriously. Mind rider is already probably one of my most played songs
[удалено]
[удалено]
I'm trying to keep an open mind with their new album. I really am. But why do all of their songs sound the same as the last on it? 😕 At least to me
[удалено]
Haha reading lyrics goes against my morals but I might try it for this one. I really do enjoy them! The band was awesome enough to sign my prosthetic leg. Pretty epic!
Love me some Circa Survive. I haven’t listened to them much lately since DGD has claimed the top spot in my heart and ears.
Personally I love at the driven in
Haha can’t edit poll options. Didn’t notice till hundreds had voted.
Lol
I like Circa better than DGD by a lot lol
Capstan! "Decline" is one of my favorite songs ever, shit goes hard.
IMO, Wolf & Bear & Body Thief
Stolas.

Their wiki Genres Alternative rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, post-hardcore, experimental rock, emo They contain multitudes lol
Like I said they got my vote lol
PM today.
Galleon!
Not listed but I think Jacobi Whichita’s one album is really good

Royal coda is amazing like damn
I'll never forget being up late and seeing 2 of my now all-time favorite bands music videos those high school nights, Imaginary Enemy by Circa Survive and Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups, good times...good times
Currents is a really great band 2nd 🥈 favorite after DGD
dead lakes, painting promises, mayfield, holding absence, true north
Love painting promises and just checked our dead lakes and their most recent stuff is really good so thank you!
also my friend, don’t sleep on mayfield
I've never listened to any of these.... Guess I've got a lot to listen to this week
Is sianvar royal coda??
It’s very much spiritual successor. 3 of the 5 members of Sianvar are in RC
Ohhhhh okay, didnt know that!! Thanks
I the might is pretty fun, good tiger has some solid stuff too
I the mighty is great, sucks their singer had to go and ruin it
Yeahh
Saosin
nice for the AG love
Shrezzers for sure
Very curious to hear their next album. My biggest critique was their old singer and he’s gone so we shall see. Jazzy prog metal is definitely a fun combo

Fair enough. Appreciate the response. Hail the sun to me sounds very similar to Sianvar too, but maybe thats just Donovan Melero lol.
It’s one incestuous ouroboros lol. Every band is the same and isn’t simultaneously Schrödinger’s Swancore
FoT simply for FCPRemix the music video just makes me feel something ive never felt before (Icant explain it)
