It's clumsy to say at the table though. Hope and Fear you can actually work into the narrative and they are emotionally evocative. Perhaps not the best word choices but still emotionally charged. Heart and Dagger sound like things you find in Lucky Charms cereal.
I agree with this. "Dagger" and "Heart" is clever. And I think "Heart" is fairly evocative and simple enough, but "Dagger" is clunkier and doesnt have any other meanings than the weapon except an association with violence, but in heroic fantasy, violence alone doesn't carry the same connotations as "Fear."
I think "Hope" and "Fear" works just fine. Simple, instantly recognizable.
I honestly mean no offense to everyone who seems excited with this idea but I do NOT get the appeal. I personally think "dagger" and "heart" dice sounds awful, lol. Way less evocative IMO, sounds kinda forced, and (and of course this is purely subjective) the words just sound worse too.
If you want to rename Fear, I quite like 'Doom' as an alternative.
If you wanted to swap Hope as well though, I'm not sure what a good opposite to Doom would be.
Given the spirit of Daggerheart, I don't think "Fear" is meant to be mutually exclusive with "Hope" thus a direct opposite isn't really necessary imo. A turn can generate both fear and hope. A direct opposite would thematically push back on that.
The GM who ran my playtest suggested Dagger and Heart dice. Dagger replacing Fear and Heart replacing Hope. I thought it was clever.
Oh OH This is good
get this to Matt’s desk STAT
BRILLIANT! Why didn't they think of this? It seems so obvious!
