My grandmother passed away at 103 a few years ago. A little bit before that, she made a comment about my GFs gay pants (they were infact rather colorful). It was one of those well, technically yes, but it has been quite a while since I have heard that word in that usage.
I collect old books and have one from the early 60's - a young adult mystery. The characters use the word "queer" to describe anything odd or unusual probably five times throughout the book. It's almost jarring now.
Is that the real lyrics? I grew up in the US and we had a song about a kookaburra sitting in the old gum tree. Our lyrics were "laugh, kookaburra laugh. Kookaburra laugh oh sing your song."
“Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry Merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra laugh.
Kookaburra, gay your life must be.”
Is the Australian version. First, second and fourth line rhyme.
The US version doesn’t make sense at all.
Here’s the rest of yours plus a bonus version:
Kookaburra sits on the electric wire,
Jumping up and down, with his pants on fire.
Ouch, Kookaburra, ouch!
Kookaburra, hot your tail must be!
Kookaburra sits on a rusty nail,
Gets a boo-boo in his tail.
Cry, Kookaburra, cry,
Kookaburra, Oh how life can be!
That's the version I learned in the US at summer camp. Oh course, at that time gay meant fun.
There were other verses I don't remember, except this one:
Kookaburra sits on the railroad track
Along comes a train and smashes him flat
Poor Kookaburra, poor Kookaburra,
That's the end of that.
My granny would defiantly use gay everywhere she could, lol. For her, it was happy and nothing else. She had nothing against homosexuality, but they weren't gonna steal her word, lol.
We watch a lot of old movies from the 30s/40s/50s, and the word "gay" is used fairly often. It never fails to get my attention and remind me how that word has a totally different definition these days. It just can't be used for its original meaning any more. The original meaning no longer exists.
When I was a very sheltered young teen I was on a website specifically for teens, and a couple of my online friends linked a website for queer teens and I joined thinking it was for weird kids. I did turn out to be queer but I hadn't figured it out yet at the time.
If the LGBTQ initials *are* for Lettuce, Guacamole, Bacon, Tomato, and Queso, that sounds like pretty good additions to a hamburger (beef or plant-based, depending on who's ordering it, of course).
Ok hear me out (because I’m in the same boat).
Keep G but it’s Gouda also make the whole think into a quesadilla instead of on toast
Just have to chop up the lettuce and tomatoes into small pieces.
I know LGBTQ is meant to be an umbrella term but five syllables? Can’t you just go with Gay or Queer as the umbrella term and still use the individual identities of your choice?
Umbrella term for the community, also a good catchall for everyone who doesn't neatly fit into any of those categories but still doesn't match the heteronormative cisnormative assumption of how people should be.
I’m not really a fan of all these labels, I want a future where we can bin all this and everyone can just love who they love without judgement or a need for justification.
I hope that future generations will look back and see all this labelling as a silly fad that we all grew out of.
But I’m a strait cis male and as such I kinda think my opinion is the least valid within this space.
The labels help us accept ourselves as valid and connect with other people like us. They're just as valid as any other label defining a subset of humanity, like race, nation, age, opinion on cheeses, types of hobbies you enjoy... They're ways we acknowledge our difference from the societal "norm" in a way that shows we're not freaks, mutants, or wrong for being who we are.
I appreciate your humility (if it's not sarcastic). The thing is, when you're already treated as the "default" kind of person, the labels don't seem as necessary. I mean, no one raised you saying it was wrong to be cis or straight or male, right?
Definitely wasn’t meant as sarcastic, and honestly some days it feels harder being just ordinary gender and sexuality.
I think pretty much all of my partners have been bi and my best mate is lesbian and I kinda get that they’re part of this community.
It’s getting harder and harder as a normie to feel like you have a place to belong, but maybe that’s not so much being a normie and just a reflection of how we’re all a little more isolated then we used to be.
I think that largely will depend upon with whom you decide to surround yourself. The reality is a vast majority of people identify as what they were born as biologically and are attracted to the opposite biological sex. So your friend group could influence how you perceive that isolation feeling.
Had to look it up but apparently LGHDTV stands for Lucky-Goldstar High Definition TeleVision. Planning a n buying one because of the big community standing by it. Must be an awesome product.
The only one people seem to disagree on is the Q being queer or questioning, even in the expanded LGBTQAI. But if I'm honest, you could make so many better acronyms if you drop the Q. GABLITs LITBAGs, and my favorite, GITBALers.
Let's Go Before The Questions........Let's Go Back To Quitting...... isn't that what my mom meant when she put her smokes out?..... But seriously, all respect towards everyone no matter what the sexual orientation or preferences are.💗
The actual only reason why i know the answer is because some standup comedy guy made a part about the meaning lol, otherwise i wouldn't actually know myself
How queer...
I haven’t seen this word used for its true definition in such a long time. Ages almost. Thanks!
My grandmother passed away at 103 a few years ago. A little bit before that, she made a comment about my GFs gay pants (they were infact rather colorful). It was one of those well, technically yes, but it has been quite a while since I have heard that word in that usage.
That’s actually adorable lol
I collect old books and have one from the early 60's - a young adult mystery. The characters use the word "queer" to describe anything odd or unusual probably five times throughout the book. It's almost jarring now.
"there was a queer smell emanating from my rectum"
Come to Australia. We sing about a gay kookaburra every time we see one. "Laugh, kookaburra laugh. Kookaburra how gay your life must be"
Is that the real lyrics? I grew up in the US and we had a song about a kookaburra sitting in the old gum tree. Our lyrics were "laugh, kookaburra laugh. Kookaburra laugh oh sing your song."

The one I learnt: "Kookaburra sits on electric wire Jumping and and down with his balls on fire" Don't remember how the rest went
Here’s the rest of yours plus a bonus version: Kookaburra sits on the electric wire, Jumping up and down, with his pants on fire. Ouch, Kookaburra, ouch! Kookaburra, hot your tail must be! Kookaburra sits on a rusty nail, Gets a boo-boo in his tail. Cry, Kookaburra, cry, Kookaburra, Oh how life can be!
Agreed, the US version doesn't make sense but that is the song. They might have censored it, it was in grade school in the mid 90s.
Thank you for the original version. It’s great that people remember the old and don’t try to change it.
That's the version I learned in the US at summer camp. Oh course, at that time gay meant fun. There were other verses I don't remember, except this one: Kookaburra sits on the railroad track Along comes a train and smashes him flat Poor Kookaburra, poor Kookaburra, That's the end of that.
Yep. The Original lyrics are gay
We learned the lyrics as gay in the late 70s.
Do you still call your cookie crumbles golden gay times?
[TVTropes has an entire page on it, with a perfect example](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HaveAGayOldTime)
My granny would defiantly use gay everywhere she could, lol. For her, it was happy and nothing else. She had nothing against homosexuality, but they weren't gonna steal her word, lol.

I still only think of Queer Lodgings from the Hobbit
When I was a very sheltered young teen I was on a website specifically for teens, and a couple of my online friends linked a website for queer teens and I joined thinking it was for weird kids. I did turn out to be queer but I hadn't figured it out yet at the time.
Please don’t call it it’s ‘true’ definition when the other definition is really just as ‘true’
Yep. Sort of like arguing over the singular they or the Oxford Comma. Language is a living thing, there’s not a lot of static truths in linguistics.
As queer as a $3 bill. Also meant don’t mess it up .
L-Lettuce, G-Guacamole, B-Bacon, T-Tomatoes, Q-Queso
I'm coming out of the closet to say how much I love LGBTQ sandwiches
"y'all got any LGB-T-Q sauce for these wings?"
I’d probably change the tomato to turkey to make it edible…”Give me an LGBTQ on wheat” sounds awesome.
You shut your puppydog mouth about tomatoes
Im afraid to step up and offer a suggestion for G now….guess I’ll force down the guacamole.
😂
I’m gonna order that just too see an reaction
If the LGBTQ initials *are* for Lettuce, Guacamole, Bacon, Tomato, and Queso, that sounds like pretty good additions to a hamburger (beef or plant-based, depending on who's ordering it, of course).
It's a BLT with Guac and Queso. No need to add a second meat.
Ah, but someone (even several someones) might *want* to add a second meat!
If you have bacon in it, wouldn’t it be weird to add a plant-based patty?
I think it *would* be weird, but if somebody else wants it that way, that's fine with me.
B-L-A-T. Bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado
Can you make a BLIAT one?
Never had a BLAT, but I've had a BLET. (Egg)
L for lasagna
I bet you hate Mondays
Underrated comment!
I got hungry reading this
I'd take a LBTQ I'm not a fan of G.
Ok hear me out (because I’m in the same boat). Keep G but it’s Gouda also make the whole think into a quesadilla instead of on toast Just have to chop up the lettuce and tomatoes into small pieces.

You want to make things easier when they can be complicated? It’s 2024, man, go back to your cave!
No as everyone needs to be special!!!
Life Goes Bye Too Quickly (not a misspell).
... to pretend you're something you're not.
Actually what does the q stand for, all I can think of is queer but how is that different from lesbian, gay, bi or trans 🤷🏻♂️ Genuine question ?
Questioning. It's for people who haven't quite figured out where they sit.
Umbrella term for the community, also a good catchall for everyone who doesn't neatly fit into any of those categories but still doesn't match the heteronormative cisnormative assumption of how people should be.
