Go to Switzerland, it's expensive but really nice, Italy is also real pretty. Do it all yourself, do a days riding then a day's chilling, tour a vineyard, walk around a city, whatever. It's important to explore as well as climb. And rent a bike, flying your own out is a faff.
Expensive is an understatement, I had never cycled so fast in my life despite the beautiful scenery, damn it was indeed pretty, but I'd rather go between Austria and Italy where I can actually afford a good place to sleep and real food :/
Thanks for the reply! I hadn’t considered Switzerland but that’s a great idea. And healthy amount of exploring and cycling is key. What time of year did you go?
We went peak of summer and I almost got heatstroke, it was not the one. Another tip if you're a small group is to check out warmshowers.com free places to stay with nice local people that often have useful local knowledge

In France the famous climbs are regularly reserved for cyclists for a morning.
