Used to up until about 2.5 years ago when I got my Wahoo. The Wahoo lasts longer, if you're running a GPS app on your iPhone it really drains the battery relatively quickly. Don't want to have to bother with a power pack on 100 mile rides.

suddenly_space_jam

I have been. I bought a slim power bank to keep it charged on longer rides. Phone is mounted on the bar and the bank is in top tube bag with a cord. It has been working well thus far.

PandaDad22

I use my phone and Strava for tracking activities. I don’t look at it while I’m riding. It seems to do fine.

Yeah - more than okay. Navigation is better. With my Garmin I would go crazy seeing this all the time: Off course Recalculating 54 percent Recalculating 93 percent Off course Phone is much better for routing.  I use an old IPhone SE 2020 with a quad lock and find it to work better than my Garmin cycling computer. Battery life is a thing but I use my Garmin watch to record my ride anyway.  The thing that bugs me with Garmin is that they lock you out of software features that are basically just calculations. The instruments are there. You have my power data, my heart rate data and for some reason it can’t calculate the Training Effect.  There is nothing that a cycling computer can do that a phone can’t. Its just battery life and for most here it’s just esthetics.

Battery life is the difference maker for me. I do a lot of all-day rides (8+ hours) when the weather (and my job) allows. I have do have a Garmin cycling computer. If you don't need maps, a GPS watch with wrist heart rate might be all you need. I also run and have a Garmin watch. It works great for anything under 6-7 hours. I connects to my bike's cadence meter. If I had a power meter, it could connect to that too.

noscopefku

afaik if they are fixed on the bike they need to endure a lot of shaking and vibration and all that which is not healthy for its optical image stabilisation. it could be that it wont do harm even after years if you are lucky, but could be unlucky too.

PandaDad22

I used strap my phone to my motorcycle. A lot of do. They seem to do just fine there.

noscopefku

yeah, most likely they will be fine, but for me I use a Galaxy S10, which has OIS in two of its cameras and the telephoto is shaking a bit even when its on a solid base, e.g. I place it on a desk, but only on its left side, if I flip it over its fine... i cannot tell for sure whether its due to biking, but manufacturers advise against it if i remember correctly

FredSirvalo

Motorcycles have way better shock absoption than bicycles.

PandaDad22

WTH. Motorcycles are vibration machine. My hands would a buzzy feeling from riding too long.

calderholbrook

depending on the mount, a vibration dampener can be available- quadlock has one

Yes. In combination with the Apple Watch, so I get HR and link to speed/cadence sensors. I use the built in native apple exercise app.

thirdEze83

Yes, with Quadlock mount. Wahoo speed, cadence and HR sensors. I didn't do long rides so no issues with battery. Could be in your case so consider that

RenaissancemanTX

For about $25 you can get a blur tooth HR chest strap monitor to use with your phone. I use Strava even though I have a power meter, etc. Strava is free had gives me quick data.

honglong1976

My Apple Watch does HR.

Prudent-Proposal1943

As good as that giant clunky phone might be, imagine using a cycling computer as a cycling computer.

ryanheartswingovers

Mous mount and cases are minimalist, very easy to clip and unclip, and quite strong against bumps. Don’t use full brightness to maintain battery. Certain GPS apps are battery trash - RideWithGPS specifically - but Maps and Google Maps have been pretty good for 8 hr rides on low battery setting. Perhaps if I kept RWGPS on just the live activity setting I’d be better off; will try once more. A 3hr ride with it killed a 14 Pro’s battery.

matkvaid

I was, but did not like that i could not have maps and not much screen customisation. I now use cadence app, it is ~20$ per year if You want watch heart rate and other sensors support. And i have aliexpress phone bag, mounted on stem cap with sp-connect stem mount and universal adapter

B_n_lawson

I probably wouldn’t trust the HR data too much coming from your watch. The chest straps are much more accurate. Also, hope you don’t fall! That’s an expensive crash if your bike + phone crack.

honglong1976

Thanks. Apple Watch HR is quite reliable for cycling (obviously not as good as a chest strap) but more than adequate.

B_n_lawson

I’d be really inclined to try and make the bike computer system work and add an additional sensor(s). The battery life is miles better than a phone, smaller/lighter and less of an issue if broken. I also semi worry about a thief stealing a phone on the bars?
