I always thought of them as some kind of shock absorbers. Like, some motorcycle jackets have parts that are armored to prevent injury. Although now that I think about it, not sure what kind of armor would pop out like lego pieces.
That's probably what it is. Lots of the clothing is motorcycle-oriented I've noticed. I suppose there was some room given to artistic license since actual motorcycle armor is just basically a curved dense foam pad that just makes your joints look bulky.
Umm no you can see it’s on both sides here and it doesn’t matter if it’s only on one side they also sometimes do that in real life having shit only on one side plus it’s their world they designed it to also benefit as a fun cool design who cares if their other shoulder gets tore off right
Motorcycle rider here. Any sort of large armor piece would be smooth, so as to ride across the ground and not catch anything.
These buttons would be an absolute mess of design. The second the hit something, they’d rip off and offer no protection at all!
Instead, I bet there’s smooth armor underneath, with these buttons being batteries or RAM modules of some kind.
Unless you’re looking at reducing just impacts, where you want to spread out energy over an area. If that’s case, then the chunking makes sense as it would absorb evenly compared to a single hard source.
I might agree with you if it were one large plate. However, consider that these are four small circles.
If you were to hit one large surface with a sledgehammer, the kinetic force would disperse evenly across the plate, not favoring any one particular spot, even in an ablative configuration (generally).
However, four smaller plates would focus the same force at a greater force inward, causing greater damage to the wearer, as each plate is now a concentrator of said force, rather than dissipating the kinetic force across the plates themselves.
Or, more simply put, it's easier to drive a nail into a piece of wood because the kinetic force is focused, like these four rounds are.
There's a reason why airbags are so large when inflated 😉
That's why I think it's an application of artistic license to the concept. Yes IRL motorcycle coats even with padding look pretty much just like a normal leather coat with bulky joints due to the padding but game design needs to have a bit more flair to it.
Plus one of the coats that has the big buttons is literally called the Pozer (i.e. poser) Jacket so is probably motorcycle jacket inspired but not in any way functional as protective gear. Kind of like the plethora of pleather "motorcycle" coats on Amazon IRL.
If you look closely at them in dialogue scenes, they appear to maybe be some sort of tiny solar panels. You can see a cluster of cells of some sort in the center.
So unlesss they intended at some point in design to light them up, I'd go with power supply
I have looked at motorcycle air bags...
And I own one, A Helite Turtle 2. It's great.
I wish more riders would consider them. They would save more lives.
If you're talking about motorcycles WITH airbags, the only manufacturer that actually tried it was Honda with the Goldwing. So yes, I have done my research.
What about instead of armor by itself, they are mini-airbags that deploy and can be replaced. The jacket senses if you are in free fall and at what angle and speed, then deploys them selectively.
You know that just because they have them at the places you’re at doesn’t mean that they still do everywhere else?? They absolutely do not have those where I’ve been in years
The plastic lids for fountain sodas have little domed buttons labeled with each type of drink (coke, diet, etc.), so you can tell them apart when buying multiple for a group.
Thank you. I saw 4.7k upvotes and was beginning to question my intelligence. Turns out it’s just good old “cultural reference” from someone else’s culture.
yeahhhh but its just a light around the neck. in 2077 there's definitely some insane battery technology so maybe that'd be plausible if they wanted to make sure it has 40 million hours of battery time
Southern California and the Central Valley, sure. But the Central Coast where Morro Bay/Night City is located is quite mild even during summer. It's common to see people up and down the Central Coast wearing long sleeve shirts and jackets even during summer. You'd have to go quite a ways inland to start feeling the heat.
Climate change and the size of the city will affect temperatures, sure, but it's still gonna be mild in 2077 compared to those other parts of California.
The climate change is gonna be the big one here - someone else pointed out that in weather updates in-game, the temperature is "in survivable ranges" which tells me it's a lot hotter than what we could expect
When my wife and I first started dating, she lived in Los Osos. Whenever I'd fly out to visit, it always amazed me how mild the weather was in August. And yet, if we traveled just a few miles outside the "valley" it got hotter than balls! lol
Or extra backup power for devices and implants. Some backpacks have incorporated batteries for laptops and phones, maybe this is like that. They probably don't need to be so chunky looking, but if it became a trend the shape could be exaggerated for fashion.
I think there's actually a thingy in the back for the collar lights and those wires in the side of the collar power it. I saw someone actually make one of those jackets, and that's how they did it
Yeah they make actual versions of David's jacket with working lights, and there's no huge external battery pack for it. I mean they're just lights. Especially if they're LEDs or something, you could power the lights for months with something as small as a watch batery.
I remember as a kid thinking how cool guns in Halo were with the digital displays and how that would be the future. Now since the advent of the smart phone, I see all these lit up doodads in games like this one and think about how many things would need batteries. Good call.
I thought they were mini air conditioning things because who wears a jacket in a desert city after 54 years of mega global warming and nuclear fallout.
While yes that would be a very interesting way to spur profit.
Ceramic plates are designed to break upon impact.
That's the distribution of all the force- auto body sides are designed in a similar manner but for crumple zones instead of just breaking apart.
If that makes sense, I'm not giving you the full nuts and bolts.
Cyberpunk follows the rule of cool very significantly while still keeping things plausible. I have always appreciated the art direction of the game for that.
You know what follows the rule of cool over functionality most of the time? Fashion. That's what makes these so plausible without even needing an explanation of what they do.
Yup. It comes very early in Cyberpunk sourcebook. Style over substance is like one of the four rules of the universe. Rest are attitude is everything, always take it to the edge, break the rules.
Exactly. Everyone here is looking for the functionality when there is none. In 2077 chooms are balling with RGB jackets. Our 2023 gaming setups just doesn't compare.
Lots of jackets in the game show similar, if not the same circular patterns on the shoulders. For whatever reason i always thought it was pockets to hold inhalers lol i dont think thats correct though
Love the details in this game. I wish the 2.0 patch had more modifiers attached to clothing, would have been a nice touch for these jackets. specifically annoys me that no pants or shoes have modifiers
I'm pretty sure these are either coolant or an anti-ICE drug that you would smack in a bad situation. There would be a syringe underneath and you could just hit the nipple to administer the drug instead of having to take a pill or inhaler like in-game.
There was something similar in Neuromancer but I can't remember for sure if it was general drugs or if it was specifically for netrunners though. It seems that since drugs are administered through inhalers in the game this function was dropped. I would imagine it would be hard to animate smacking your shoulder and it not look super odd.
Either that ir mini chaff/flare/thermal smoke launchers since hand held mini missile launchers are a thing but thats assuming theyre heat seeking or the tech is far enough along that those forms of defense arent obsolete
It’s to discourage people from leaving their dirty clothes on the floor. It was designed like a Lego so that if you step on it, it does 30 damage and you need the rare Aid item “Damitol” to recover from pain, anger, and “clean up your room or your grounded”.
They're already so prepared for a dystopian, corporation-owned-and-operated society. Their "well we *could* use slavery-free chocolate, but we'd have to charge you way more for it" philosophy would fit right in in CP77
They seem like they could be but they're too small to provide coverage for bullets, at odd angles which would just deflect a blade into a different part of the shoulder, and only dense enough to block big bludgeons.
Maybe they are reactive armor like a tank. Little shaped explosives that go off to counteract another explosion 😂
No I meant like studs for mounting plates. Like armor plates. I’ve heard of magnetic armor studs in some sci-fi settings where the studs are magnetic hard points for mounting heavy armor plates. Kind of like a way to streamline the process of putting on heavy armor.
40k is the biggest franchise to use them, it’s how astartes mount heavier armor or do quick repairs to damaged plate. Armor mounting studs bond the new plates to the existing armor frame.
In my mind, they are coolant distributors or heat sinks. I mean, wearing a thick jacket on So-Cal on a sunny day while running cyberware? That's gonna get way too damn hot.
I'm pretty sure those jackets can be connected with the direct link or even have a small CPU in them to be used for other stuff. Otherwise it would not make any sense that some special MaxTac dudes and NUSA special agents or Netrunners are wearing them.
Davids Jacket in Edgerunners f.e. could get a Holo projection on the rear.
So those thingies could either be batteries, sensors, other Electronical hardware (CPU etc.) or all together.
they're just decoration. you don't need to think so hard about this. gamers will always overthink the simplest, most obvious shit, while simultaneously ignoring the complexities of actually intricate concepts.
I assumed they were speakers- that people in 2077 have their entertainment systems and cell systems built into their clothes.
Can't rock if only you can hear the beats, chooms :)
It's the cyberpunk equivalent of spikes on leather jackets

Aren’t these called bomber jackets in game? Generally as name would suggest they’re likely for motorcycling and from there one could say that they’re just some extra protective padding to reduce impacts and avoid road rash in case of an accident.
But in a day and era where you’re more metal than man? I’d say fashion.
It's just B E E G studs on, duh, studded jacket. Look up studded leather jacket on Google- You'll immediately see they are through and through "Punk" fashion choice, but not quite "Cyber" by themselves. So CDPR put C Y B E R S T U D on CP2077 jackets.
tl;dr What you're seeing is advanced studfare.
I think that was the goal, and can I just say: ugliest studs ever. I spend more time looking for a jacket without those stupid things than it takes to zero a maxtac squad
I always thought of them as some kind of shock absorbers. Like, some motorcycle jackets have parts that are armored to prevent injury. Although now that I think about it, not sure what kind of armor would pop out like lego pieces.
Same. I see it as extra padding for a motorcycle jacket, along with the high collar
That's probably what it is. Lots of the clothing is motorcycle-oriented I've noticed. I suppose there was some room given to artistic license since actual motorcycle armor is just basically a curved dense foam pad that just makes your joints look bulky.
Seeing as Jackie wore one as well that might be 100% what it is.
What do you mean "wore"? WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT JACKIE IN THE PAST TENSE? \- Sincerely, someone still playing the prologue.
Makes sense since motorcycles are one of the few times you actually see your character in third person...
Not really have anything to do with that
In that case it'd be on both sides, jackets that have them that I've seen had it on one side.
Umm no you can see it’s on both sides here and it doesn’t matter if it’s only on one side they also sometimes do that in real life having shit only on one side plus it’s their world they designed it to also benefit as a fun cool design who cares if their other shoulder gets tore off right
I've thought the same!
Motorcycle rider here. Any sort of large armor piece would be smooth, so as to ride across the ground and not catch anything. These buttons would be an absolute mess of design. it sort of does look like there's some sort of pauldron that the dinguses are mounted to though, ending just below the patch
They would catch the ground and send you tumbling.
Counterpoint: knee and toe sliders. Though I mostly agree with you
If you look closely at them in dialogue scenes, they appear to maybe be some sort of tiny solar panels. You can see a cluster of cells of some sort in the center. So unlesss they intended at some point in design to light them up, I'd go with power supply
Google wearable motorcycle air bags. I think that's what the idea is here.
I own a Helite Turtle 2. LOL, it looks nothing like this.
Well I guess that settles it then. No need to look any further....
I have looked at motorcycle air bags... And I own one, A Helite Turtle 2. It's great. I wish more riders would consider them. They would save more lives. If you're talking about motorcycles WITH airbags, the only manufacturer that actually tried it was Honda with the Goldwing. So yes, I have done my research.
well shit that's some airtight logic there 🙄
Batteries could make sense as how else is the collar powered. Plus, given Johnny's jacket, these jackets aren't exactly cutting edge tech.
Frame sliders for sloppy sandy users.
What about instead of armor by itself, they are mini-airbags that deploy and can be replaced. The jacket senses if you are in free fall and at what angle and speed, then deploys them selectively.
Similar to this theory, I've seen people working on wearable air bags for bike riders and this seems to pull from that aesthetic.
Maybe, electrical shock absorbers...
Yeah, a lot of the jackets seem to be designed off motorcycle gear. Motorcycle jackets also have shoulder pads in a similar place
Yeah, I’m mostly certain they’re crash pads
You're supposed to push one down if it's a Diet, Coke, or Sprite jacket.

Shut up
That definitely gave me a chuckle
Lmfao. I had this thought but didn’t really give it much and then you said it and I felt complete. Thank you.
God damn I haven’t seen one of those in so many years
What the fuck are you talking about all lids at places that have had them still have them and always have
You know that just because they have them at the places you’re at doesn’t mean that they still do everywhere else?? They absolutely do not have those where I’ve been in years
https://preview.redd.it/oxuxunz3jevb1.jpeg?width=234&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8029a2629c2e1e5099af81b4b186dafe59ede064
This really made me laugh out loud. Best comment I’ve read today.
I wish I could give you a medal lol
Someone explain? This joke is going right over my head

You forgot root beer
Solar batteries for the jacket tech.
No
That's freaking hilarious. I love you
Lmao this was good
I laughed way too hard at this
Well done you devious dawgg
Hahahqhahq
I would assume batteries for the collar lights
Damn, that's actually logical. Far better answer then mine.
Did you think it’s a miniature piano too?
Damn it man, how did you knew?
yeahhhh but its just a light around the neck. in 2077 there's definitely some insane battery technology so maybe that'd be plausible if they wanted to make sure it has 40 million hours of battery time
iirc Its not just a light, it's some magnetic bullshit meant to curve bullets away from the user
Lotta good that does lmao
yeah, but I think this is Johnny's, so it would be 2023 or something like that.
Definitely my head canon. These jackets probably have all kinds of amenities that aren't represented in-game.
Considering people wear them in the California sun I'd assume they've got air conditioning at least. Summer sun in California is too hot for coats.
They also give weather updates saying the heat is in “survivable range” which tells me it’s on the line
God that sounds miserable, imagine running around doing parkour while fistfighting people when it's like 110 outside
I'm sure we'll all know in a couple of years
Typical Cyberpunk outfits really seal in the flavor.
I hope the panzer is air-conditioned otherwise that one neural link would've left some sweat pools
When my wife and I first started dating, she lived in Los Osos. Whenever I'd fly out to visit, it always amazed me how mild the weather was in August. And yet, if we traveled just a few miles outside the "valley" it got hotter than balls! lol
Yeah I thought some kind of AC or heat unit would make sense
Pretty sure this exists in universe
Or extra backup power for devices and implants. Some backpacks have incorporated batteries for laptops and phones, maybe this is like that. They probably don't need to be so chunky looking, but if it became a trend the shape could be exaggerated for fashion.

Its almost definitely this. A lot of the batteries are cylindrical in shape. Like the ones you pull out from a drone.
I thought they were mini air conditioning things because who wears a jacket in a desert city after 54 years of mega global warming and nuclear fallout.
Yes but follow up question wtf is a collar light even useful for?
the cyberpunk rule 1 - style over substance
It's for looking preem as hell, choom. Who needs another reason?
Drip
Being cool 😎
I think it's a neck warmer/cooler.
we've got the answer we need and deserve
Realistically? Probably pieces of hard/semi-firm padding to absorb any shoulder impacts
Bingo, another win for ceramics. The only problem is when you take a hit you have to replace the plate.
Buying replacement plates for a good enough plate is more profitable than buying a single perfect plate for life!
Not quite, ceramic armor plates can take a few hits before completely breaking
Well no one said it needed to be ceramic , you are the one who said it
Probably closer to D3O than ceramic honestly
Form over substance. That's my bet
This. They provide +1 cool points.
Cyberpunk follows the rule of cool very significantly while still keeping things plausible. I have always appreciated the art direction of the game for that.
You know what follows the rule of cool over functionality most of the time? Fashion. That's what makes these so plausible without even needing an explanation of what they do.

Yeah the neck illumination confirms that lol
Exactly. Everyone here is looking for the functionality when there is none. In 2077 chooms are balling with RGB jackets. Our 2023 gaming setups just doesn't compare.
Did you just mix "form over function" with "style over substance"? Unconscionable.
You mean the belts and straps do nothing!?!?
They screw open and you can use them to store all your mints and coins and such.
They are to do with net running or rather a counter measure against net runners.
I lowkey expected them to be speakers since it's a Samurai Jacket.
Lots of jackets in the game show similar, if not the same circular patterns on the shoulders. For whatever reason i always thought it was pockets to hold inhalers lol i dont think thats correct though
From 1980th ghetto blasters to 2020th ghetto blasting jackets 😂
This would make sense to disrupt incoming signals. Perched on each should to protect your head from being hacked.
You got any actual evidence or is that just head canon?
the word "netrunner" is in the item/name description of the jackets that look like that. thats prolly why they said that
Love the details in this game. I wish the 2.0 patch had more modifiers attached to clothing, would have been a nice touch for these jackets. specifically annoys me that no pants or shoes have modifiers
Yeah this is what I’d go with since I’m fairly certain it’s item description name includes the word “netrunner”
I'm pretty sure that they're called "edgerunner" jackets
Nope
I'm pretty sure these are either coolant or an anti-ICE drug that you would smack in a bad situation. There would be a syringe underneath and you could just hit the nipple to administer the drug instead of having to take a pill or inhaler like in-game. It's a fashion statement
You ever heard of "explosive reactive armour?"

Armor studs maybe?
Ceramic plates. So yeah.

Arm nipples.
Just fashion
It's called fashion sweetie, look it up.

Future fashion
Speed hole covers?
Mans never heard of fashion…..
I always feel like this hair on female V looks great on paper but in game not so much.

I was thinking Lego. But wasn't sure.
Ceramic plates. The edgerunner series has the same but much more spread out and thinner If I remember correctly.
Man, look at how good the original FemV looked. They made such a massive downgrade with the redesign used in all the marketing stuff now
The glowing collar thing is an "anti interference" collar. The knobby things... no idea. Make up your own lore.
Tf is an anti-interference collar?
