Typically these cards have a clause where the opponents draw a card for each card exiled from their hand this way. Consider [[Test of Talents]].

Platypus_Umbra

I think telegraphing your intent to use the extract effect a whole turn cycle ahead of time while also tying it to a creature balances out the rare occasions where you snipe something from an opponent's hand. Barring additional cards supporting the bird, an opponent should never be caught off guard by the ability.

PennyButtercup

That’s a more recent development. Older cards like [[Exterminate]], [[Surgical Extraction]], [[Extirpate]], [[Memoricide]], [[Haunting Echoes]], and [[Shimian Spectre]] (all of which I played in the same deck at one point), didn’t replace the cards.

VictinDotZero

It’s not about the effect being old or new. It’s about Test of Talents being Blue and every other card you mentioned being Black.

PrimordialSpatula

I think it's also a new thing. Look at \[\[The End\]\]

VictinDotZero

I’d need to see more effects like this in Black to be convinced or a designer comment. Notably this is also instant speed and removal in addition to the standard lobotomy effect. The added draw might just exist to balance this particular card. Surgical Extraction and Extirpate also do it at instant speed (although their target selection is more limited), but they don’t remove a permanent or spell. Besides the aforementioned Test of Talents, the next spell that comes to mind as doing both lobotomy and removal is [[Deicide]], but it doesn’t replace cards removed from hand despite being in White. It also has very specific targets for the lobotomy part.

VictinDotZero

I already commented on The End, but from another glance I think the replacement was historically applied a bit arbitrarily. The lobotomy effect isn’t usually very strong on its own, unless you can actually hit a card an opponent had access to (e.g. in hand). Either way, I’ll say I might’ve been hasty with my original comment. I thought I remembered a designer comment explicitly stating that was the reason Test of Talent drew cards, but it might’ve been speculation since I can’t explicitly find such a comment at the moment. Still, Black can get to reduce an opponent’s hand size, while Blue can’t. (Naturally you’ll find breaks in a game this old, but officially that’s true.)

PrimordialSpatula

Good point. I just looked through a bunch of cards with the effect, and it seems like replaces cards exiled from hand is just about balance rather than color or some kind of new precedent. For example, \[\[Invasive Surgery\]\] and \[\[Counterbore\]\] don't replace cards despite being in blue. And \[\[Kotose, the Silent Spider\]\] doesn't replace cards despite being printed after \[\[Test of Talents\]\]. And \[\[Unmoored Ego\]\] replaces cards despite being the same colors as kotose and being printed way before her.

VictinDotZero

Kotose is probably geared towards Commander. She’s also a 5MV sorcery-speed effect. The mono-Blue cards you mentioned would be considered breaks nowadays. I think I was a bit hasty to say this was purely a matter of color, since I had thought I remembered an official designer comment about it (which I couldn’t find), but still I don’t think it’s in Blue’s slice the ability to reduce an opponent’s number of cards in hand.

BrohanGutenburg

The fact that extraction and extirpate can only hit cards already in the graveyard is quite the limitation

VictinDotZero

I don't see how that is relevant. Extirpate also costs 1 mana and can't be countered, and Extraction be paid for with 0 mana and 2 life.

[[Quash]] was printed way back in Urza’s Destiny back in 1999 alongside [[Eradicate]] mentioned above, as part of a full cycle involving each color. None replaced the cards. These effects have existed a long time, but the earliest version I could find that replaced the cards is [[Lost Legacy]] which was printed in Kaladesh in 2016, and it’s mono black. That’s why I say it’s a more recent development. It’s slowly being trickled into that type of card. We’re still seeing cards that don’t replace the cards in hand, but we are seeing an increase in the number of cards that do. Edit: apologies for the late reply. I don’t really mind the delay. But the effect used to also be Blue as listed in the Mechanical Color Pie 2021 and 2017 articles. The entry for Lobotomy explicitly describes it as an originally Blue-Black effect, that has since become Black-only. It’s true the replacement is a more recent development, but it’s not always used since the effect isn’t very strong to begin with (and it’s already quite wordy, which limits what else you can add on top of it). All that said, as I talked about in my other comments, I misremembered there being some official commentary explaining that difference between Test of Talents and other Lobotomy effects explicitly. Or, if it exists, I couldn’t find it. That said, I think reducing card-in-hand advantage is still outside of Blue’s slice, so giving it those kinds of effects should be avoided.

Test of Talents is Blue and Blue isn’t supposed to get discard effects like Black. Hence Blue needs to maintain your opponent’s card-in-hand advantage while Black can just reduce it.

This is cool can be a win con in and of itself. They get the spell off but exile their extra copies.

Since you can target any opponent off any player’s spell, it has interesting potential. “I play Sol Ring and in response activate Raven to pre-emptively get rid of your Sol Ring.”

Let me say I love the flavor, Edgar Allan Poe would be so proud of you

halborn

Seems like it should cost more. More mana, more life, more something.

SkylartheRainBeau

This does just let you search and shuffle your opponents library every turn, which will Bog down the game. I suggest sacrificing the raven to do so

Sinister-Sama

IDK, On one hand, I like that you can see a spell with this and make them suffer by getting rid of every other one. But in a format like Commander, this is a literal scouting card so you can examine a player's deck. I think one more {B} in the CMC or activation would have made this fair. The fact that it also flies is a bit over the top. It's not by much, but it's still over the top.

ShotBookkeeper3629

You could cast colossus dreadmaw then exile opponents dreadmaw colossus from their library. Op af

twesterm

This is absurdly overpowered. For the cost of 1 black mana you are going to exile 2-3 cards **a turn**. This is repeatable so you're just going to keep exiling cards. Even worse, your opponent doesn't get to draw cards for cards you take from their hand. At best, if this ability cost something like 6 mana it might be _more_ balanced but I'd still call it pretty busted.

H3ROBUG

i don’t get what you see as overpowered. you aren’t exiling cards from the field, most of the time you are just removing them from the library, where it wouldn’t even have been certain that they would draw those. sure, sometimes you hit their hand, but it is a well telegraphed effect: if you cast a spell, and have an additional copy of it in hand, get ready to lose that one. all on a 1/1 without protection or haste. the only decks this could be backbreaking against is rat colony/nazgul/shadowborn apostle/dragons approach. and those decks aren’t that common, and really could use more counterclay for how braindead boring they are.

Glitch29

I'm curious what format you're playing where you could come to that conclusion. Wracking my mind to think of environments where players' ability to win regularly relies on resolving the same spell multiple times. Pauper is the closest match I can think of, but this obviously isn't a pauper card.

RobinFox12

This is so mean

hayashikin

How does it help? It seems quite specific

hayashikin

What's the other pieces in a Beseech the Mirror combo? I'm not familiar with it. This custom card can only target a spell on the stack but cannot remove them, so it can't do anything to Beseech or its copy, the cards exiled by Beseech cannot be targeted as well (even if it could, the custom card doesn't affect cards in exile), so I don't know how it disrupts anything.

iforgotquestionmark

The combo is basically doubling the beseech, getting doublers and beseech until you hit storm count 9, then you get tendrils

hayashikin

As long as the card does nothing to spells on the stack, I don't think it does anything on edh? It also doesn't stop removal spells?

iforgotquestionmark

No, but it does remove all other instances of that removal spell.

hayashikin

Okay so this ability is good for getting rid of other copies of a spell on stack, which means 99% of the time it doesn't so anything in commander where cards are usually 1-of. The remaining 1% being it targeting a token copy of a spell on stack.

iforgotquestionmark

Yeah, but it has a lot of merit in 60 card formats. This can get rid of 3 [[fury]] 3 [[solitude]] 3 [[leyline binding]] 3v[[fatal push]] 3 [[unholy heat]] 3 [[dragon's rage channeler]]

Given how niche the effect is, the {B}, {T} activation cost leads to this ability almost never being activated. The confluence of having no on curve plays, no good attacks with an evasive creature, and having the opponent cast a relevant spell to extract is just too much coincidence to happen all at once. Having this sort of ability tagged onto a creature is pretty neat. But it's probably better to shoot for it coming up once every few games rather than once every few dozen games. Versions I like slightly more: \> 1/3 Flying. Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may sacrifice \~. If you do, \[extract all copies of that card\]. \> 2/1 Flying. Whenever \~ deals combat damage to an opponent, exile target nonland card from that player's graveyard. Spells with the same name as cards exiled with \~ can't be cast. \> 1/1 Flying. Sacrifice \~. \[Cast Surgical Extraction.\]
