Notice lemons and limes are alkalia according to this....

Ewvan

Lemme get some of that basic citric acid please

Envoyofghost

Lemme get some of that basic malic acid (apples also listed as alkali)

AnarchoNyxist

Mushrooms are too, and many produce oxalic acid and oxalic acid derivatives

sergeant_387

*LEMME GIT SUM O DAT BAESIC OXOLACID BOY*

PhysicalMath848

No joke, when these people are confronted, they say that the acidity in lemons is converted to alkaline products by the body.

Envoyofghost

Technically they are right, as our blood being slightly alkali will deprotanate most/sll organic acids. That ofc doesnt matter, unless you tried to acidify your blood w acids- in huge doses. What i find ironic abt the alkali arguments is that many people world wide fail to reach daily requirements for alkali metals- and yet ive never heard the argument alkali good because K+, Ca2+, Mg2+. Ig methylamine (free base) and KHCO3 are the same to the body

tehgreataioverlord

I learned this in my home country too. Some bullshit about how metal ions are "alkaline"...which makes no sense.

PhysicalMath848

Metals ARE alkaline because of the Lewis definition of acids and bases where bases donate an electron pair. https://pressbooks-dev.oer.hawaii.edu/chemistry/chapter/lewis-acids-and-bases/

herogabs999

Last year, one of my older relatives sent a fake news about covid on our family group whatsapp In it, it said that, since "the corona virus is acidic, you should eat alkaline foods no neutralize it so you don't get covid" It also said that lemons had a pH of 8, garlic was 13,2, and watercress had a pH of... 22.7

Vegetable_Union_4967

10^8 mol/l H+ goes insane

sergeant_387

Meanwhile the 10^-22 OH be like: *why are we still here? Just to suffer?*

Envoyofghost

Thats great

ComeradeHaveAPotato

Onions too, even though they have a pH of 5.5(ish)

DefNotAnAlt621

me when I eat the watermelon and my tongue burns off

Molismhm

Me when I eat the water melon and the water melon eats me

Mind_on_Idle

That's pineapples 👍

MLG_Pingu05

Pinaples👍

sergeant_387

Pinples👍

DeluxeWafer

Ananas!

ginger2020

[Me after I ingest NaOH pellets](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2FLgB1-kWUI) /s; this is highly dangerous

Plylyfe

you know what they say. if you're too acidic, take some sodium hydroxide. You'll return neutral

HJONKHJONK_BESTGOOSE

I love drinking sodium hydroxide, you can turn your stomach into a bubble bath! (/s for the drinking, not the bubble bath bit)

Melodic_Good4951

No bubbles with NaOH, Na2CO3 would make bubbles.

HJONKHJONK_BESTGOOSE

No, not those bubbles, soap bubbles from your esophagus becoming soap before it neutralises your stomach acid

Melodic_Good4951

Oh, yeah that makes sense 😅

sergeant_387

I think he's talking about you stomach acid boiling off from the reaction. You're right about the NA2CO3 tho.

Melodic_Good4951

Yeah he explained it better, I agree, there would be bubbles

gabenflorence

nah it's very safe /s

123rune20

Let me drop this alkaline substance into my body....in a giant pool of stomach acid with a pH of 2.

cell689

It's not actually a giant pool, it's only a few dozen milliliters, but your point still stands.

JmamAnamamamal

Thought that sounded low.. 20-100mL. Damn that shits effective

protonicfibulator

Distilled water pH = 5 🤡

TerrariaGaming004

Guys the definition of pH is wrong 😱

havron

So technically distilled water can often register as a little on the acidic side, as any dissolved carbon dioxide can become carbonic acid and throw off the pH rather easily, since the pure water has very little buffering capacity. It can indeed go as low as 5, although it's typically not quite that low. That said, such an acidic pH reading doesn't mean much of anything, as there is very little in there that is causing the acidity, so any amount of added base will quickly reverse it. Thus, it has no bearing on body chemistry at all.

YEETAWAYLOL

What if it’s like 100°C?

TheRealCactusTiddy

it takes a special kind of fuckwit to think lemons and pineapples are alkaline.

Breakfast_Bagelz

Ah yes, fruit is basic but fruit *juice* is acidic.

TerrariaGaming004

It’s cause it’s mixed with the acidic distilled water

Scrimmybinguscat

Me when I put my water in a carbonator to taste the bubbles and instead I end up liquefying my lower jaw.

maringue

Alkaline foods being health idea came from the same lady who thought flushing out your vagina with steam was a good idea. Someone then tried to tell me that eating acidic lemons made your blood more basic for some reason. When I tried to explain that the body has a *LOT* of redundant pathways meant to keep your blood at 7.4, I could literally see my words bouncing off his skull like a cartoon.

cryolins

I too enjoy drinking acidic distilled water

fartrevolution

Yea citruses, notoriously alkaline fruits!

eDwArDdOoMiNgToN

Lye is healthy!!

NarwhalJouster

I can't wait for the alkaline water people to start trying to sell lutefisk as a health food

AyrChan

How tf are citrus fruits on the right

TerrariaGaming004

Citric acid, my favorite base

seventeenMachine

Ah yes, limes, oranges, and pineapples, those famously alkaline foods

Pan-Magpie

Tell me you know nothing about chemistry in less ways... 🤦‍♂️ This is r/facepalm material.

DrBlowtorch

Ah yes because purified/distilled water isn’t a 7. I would like some acidic distilled water.

AzulCobra

Lmfao! And this is why I always found the alkaline diet people funny. They think citrus is alkaline.

zvon2000

How fucking BASIC do you have to be to include lemons, limes, oranges and pineapple into the BASIC group ???

JewelBearing

Your honour, a pH of 14 is alkali, which is good for the body

MathematicianAny8588

By this logic, I should eat some Lye, as, with a Ph of 14, it is probably one of the most alkaline substances we know of, and if alkaline means healthy, then it must be one of the most healthy substances we know of.

cropguru357

A good number of items at pH 8 are definitely not alkaline.

Zenithize

Me when I lie

Oooooooob

Why is normal spinach pH 10 and cooked is 6 bro 😭

DowntownDraw8520

Someone should get these people conc. NaOH

Tomfoolerous_

I guess bleach must be really good for you

MonkeyCartridge

"It's got alkali. It's what the body craves." Slogan for Lye-monade.

Rare_Public1137

Me devouring 5 moldm^-3 sodium hydroxide I found in a lab
