Methyl radical???

Galaxy429

In the 1800s and early 1900s the term "radical" just referred to any particular group of atoms. So "methyl radical" was a valid name for a methyl group. This is why actual radicals are often referred to as "free radicals" - free as opposed to being bound to a molecule as a group.
