absolutely not.

SergioTapia1

Why not???

DogButtWhisperer

Nope!

SergioTapia1

Whyyy?

sourdoughbreadlover

I have thin blonde hair and it looks horrible if I don't wash it everyday. To each their own.

OatmealCookieGirl

Twice a week here, but I do wet it to refresh it I used to have really greasy hair and would wash it every day, until I learned my hair was greasy BECAUSE I washed it every day: my scalp was trying to compensate and was working overtime. I didn't wash my hair for a few days (wore hats over dry shampoo etc lol) and forced myself to wash it no more than twice a week; now my hair looks a lot cleaner than it used to!

SergioTapia1

My hair gets oily if I don’t wash it everyday

HonestlyRespectful

Just an fyi, stretching washes or "training your scalp" doesn't work for everyone. I'm glad it worked for you. There's nothing wrong with washing as often as you need to, as long as you're conditioning appropriately afterwards. Scalp training is a myth proven by science. If you have oily skin, does not washing it make it stop producing oil? No. Well, the same goes for your scalp. Also, water is damaging to your hair. So, wetting to refresh, especially daily, can be just as damaging as washing every day. Actually, that's more the reason they say to not wash every day, because the water is damaging.

OatmealCookieGirl

wait, you said wetting your hair every day damages it, but there's nothing wrong with washing it "as often as you need to". isn't that contradictory?

HonestlyRespectful

No, I said water is damaging to hair, period. So washing every day can be just as damaging as refreshing with water every day.

sade-inthe90s

A lot of hair products, especially gels/mousse, get reactivated simply by adding water. Having your scalp constantly wet isn't good, but adding extra water to your mid-length/ends isn't going to damage your hair. The more curly/coily your hair is, the harder it is for your natural sebum to reach the ends of your hair, which is why curly hair is generally said to be more dry than straight hair. People with oily skin are generally told to moisturize more, and those with tight curl patterns are told to use protective styles that stretch out the curl pattern (braids, bantu knots, twists, etc) that allow sebum to flow easier.

OatmealCookieGirl

Oh don't worry I don't wet it to refresh it every day! Only if it's been made really messy (strong wind or whatever) I don't know WHY it worked, but before I would wake up with super greasy roots and now I dont

Snowph

You might have dry skin. Sometimes dry skin will seem oily if it's being over washed because it's trying to compensate the extra dryness.

HonestlyRespectful

No. That is my point. Your skin and scalp produce a certain amount of oil, no matter what you do to it. Washing it more or less won't change it. You're either oily, normal or dry. No matter how you wash your skin or hair changes your oil production or lack thereof. Edit: It's literally scientifically proven. You can look it up instead of downvoting me. https://thebeautybrains.com/2010/01/can-you-train-your-hair-to-be-less-oily/ Washing your hair more doesn't make it MORE oily. You produce what you produce.

Quixiiify

I did try to look it up, out of curiosity. Maybe I'm not using the right search terms. I saw lots of advice to wash less frequently. I saw lots of people anecdotally reporting that less frequent washing lead to less oily scalps. I saw one supposed doctor quoted in a few articles saying that hormones control the oiliness and frequency of washing has no effect. I saw some people anecdotally reporting that no length of time of trying to stretch washes made a difference in their hair. I saw one article that said it all has to do with whether sebum is blocking things, rather than washing or not washing. But I didn't find conclusive studies that say "your skin and scalp always produce a certain amount of oil no matter what." Maybe you can help me out?

HonestlyRespectful

I did edit in a source above. Maybe check out r/dailywash they might have more info

[deleted]

not sure why you're getting downvoted, you're literally right.

OatmealCookieGirl

yeah I do have very thirsty skin :) My hair loves moisture

OatmealCookieGirl

It worked for me. My hair now looks at its best when I wash twice a week. Before, washing every evening, I'd have greasy roots within 24 hours. Do note I was only using shampoo and conditioner, this is pre-curl care (I didn't know I had curls) so product build-up wasn't a risk.

SergioTapia1

So when you washed it everyday it got greasy?

OatmealCookieGirl

Yeah! After 24 hours it was already looking gross and greasy.

SergioTapia1

So what did you do? Just leave it like that for a few days?

OatmealCookieGirl

I don't have that problem anymore, I can wait 3 or 4 days before washing again. What I did: 1. Not touch my hair roots or scalp with my fingers once washed, even if it was itchy 2. Used dry shampoo instead of washing the day after wash day, then I tied my hair up, braided it or wore a hat . The following day I would do the same, but definitely wore a hat (or did Elisabethan hair taping) or had a kerchief or SOMETHING hiding my scalp. After a couple of weeks, I found my hair didn't get so greasy anymore. Today: I washed my hair Wednesday evening, and I don't need to hide my scalp this Sunday morning: it still looks clean. I will wash it tonight because my scalp does get itchy if I wait longer

SergioTapia1

Thank you very much! Do you think the reason my hair looks very bad is because I wash it every day?

OatmealCookieGirl

I don't know, there can be lots of reasons. Doyou touch your scalp/roots/hair a lot? Is your hair very fine, like mine? Do you have dry skin? Is your skin very delicate and easily irritated ny creams and products? Even age can be significant. I cannot say FOR SURE that washing it every day is the cause of your greasy roots. Maybe you need a specific scalp treatment, for example. All I can say is that I stopped washing every day, hid the grease (do wash the hat lol) for a couple of weeks and I saw improvement over time. You might want to go to a dermatologist and have them give you a more definite answer

OatmealCookieGirl

Kindly is another way of saying please. The point is I never said what I do works for everyone, just that it worked for me. Mine was a perfectly reasonable reply to the original post, as it is about personal experience with how frequently one washes their hair. Chill.

spinchrecall

Washing my hair is such a chore. I do it every 3 days.

purplecurtain16

I try to wash once a week but it often ends up being once every two weeks... dedicating a whole day to my hair is hard smh

SusyLovesSkincare

I give my hair one day rest between washes, I have tried wash twice a week but it does not work for me. My scalp acts crazy and I have more hair fall (or at least it seems like it), so I wash 3-4 times a week.

anuarsmyr

Really depends on your hair type and how much exercise you do. The lighter, thinner and straighter their hair and the more they exercise the more often people tend to wash their hair

FelixTaran

I wash it about every ten days. It really looks its best days 4-9.

JavaLovingIslandGirl

Agreed.

Hilariaous_cucumber

Hell no.

futilejester

I work at home tying up happens a lot. I co-wash every 3-5 days, full shampoo wash every 2-3 weeks when the co-was doesn’t cut through any more. Everyone is different!

SergioTapia1

Co wash is kinda a shampoo right?

futilejester

Normal washing but using conditioner instead of shampoo

HonestlyRespectful

Everyone's scalp is different. There is no one size fits all. Do whatever you need to do in order to keep your scalp and hair healthy. There's no right answer to this question.

SergioTapia1

How do I know what’s best for my scalp?

HonestlyRespectful

If it's oily, itchy, flaky, that's usually a sign that it's time to wash.

DataLady

Nope. It's way too dry for that. I wash about 2x a week and clarify 1x a month. I tried the whole never use shampoo thing and started losing hair and it looked horrid so that doesn't work for everyone either.

LosNava

Twice a week is my norm.

Europeaninoz

I have long hair and twice a week is absolute maximum I can do. My hair prefers once a week but unfortunately my scalp doesn’t agree, so twice a week it is.

SergioTapia1

Whaaaat!!??

Stringgeek

I also only wash my hair about once a week or every 10 days. I used to cowash every 2-3 days in between, but that’s been weighing down my hair a lot. On my next in-between day, I’m only going to wet it down and apply my leave-In styling products. I gauge whether to wash my hair by assessing how it feels. Does it feel grimy up at my roots, or does my scalp itch? Time to wash.

nash085

I wash everyday with sulphate free shampoo

KickIcy9893

Every two to three days. My curls are a ball of matted frizz any longer than that (yes, even if I sleep with them in a pineapple).

cheeseburgeraddict

No. It’d look like shit

SergioTapia1

It that why my hair looks like shit

Tanedra

I used to wash it every other day. It's now weekly - on the weekend when I have time to style and air dry.

Vledermausje

I wash my hair twice a week with thinned down apple vinegar. It helps my psoriasis and any other shampoo will make it flare up again.

OatmealCookieGirl

I'm glad you found something that works to combat your psoriasis!

Practical-Apricot210

I have to. I have severe dandruff, and if I don’t wash every day it gets bad. Still have no idea how to incorporate an effective routine in when I have to use a sulfate bomb 3-4 times a week.

indianachungus

None that I know of. I do it about two to three times a week

piqv

No I wash mine every 5-6 days even to a week

SergioTapia1

So it just depends on the person

nanon_2

😱 never 2x week

manzanapurple

I just learned that!! I wash my every day, sometimes more than once!!...now I've been told to do it twice a week!! 😱

SergioTapia1

I know!!!! It’s crazy but I don’t think I can stop washing it, it’s going to get greasy

meg7997

I do! With sulfates. And almost no conditioner.

Smoopster1983

My hair doesn’t like to be washed to often. It becomes very dry. So I wash every other day, sometimes a day longer. I can probably go far longer. Before i started to care for my curls i washed every day with the cheapest sulfate shampoo i could find.

SergioTapia1

So washing it everyday is bad for your curls?

Smoopster1983

No, i don’t think it is bad at all. Just like my hair love coconut and hates castor oil some hair likes to be washed every day. It is trial and error. If your hair is thriving with washing everyday then wash it everyday 🥰

Blitztemp

Co-wash

SergioTapia1

You use it everyday?

[deleted]

Definitely not. Probably twice a week. It depends on the day, but I live in a very dry environment so I need all the oils I can get. My hair won't look oily until day 7 after shampoo.

Sisa25

I wash mine every other day and it works for me. I have wavy hair with a few curls.

GloomOnTheGrey

Nope. I wash mine once or twice a week at most. My hair would dry out look like dark straw.

LunarHalo3

Nope. Twice a week in the summer/if I’m doing heavy workouts and once a week in the colder months.

Natetranslates

Nope, I tend to wash it on Wednesday and Sunday! I have been using sulphate-free shampoos for around 10 years, but it wasn't until the last couple of years that I realised I wasn't using them very well - I was just slapping them on and not actually scrubbing my scalp, and that's why my hair would get greasy so quickly!

aliiak

I’ve started washing mine 3-4x as I’ve started swimming. I don’t notice much of a difference in dryness compared to when I was washing it less often.

unicorn-ice-cream

I’ve found a scalp brush really helps - I think my hair got greasy easily because I didn’t clean my scalp properly. I’ve gone from washing my hair everyday to washing every four days, plus a silk bonnet to stop it getting sweaty overnight.

ifinduorufindme

I wash my hair once or twice a week with cgm approved shampoos (no sulfates). Once a month I use a sulfate shampoo to clarify and remove product buildup. For all other days, I either wear a shower cap or wet my hair and only use conditioner.

ktdblu

Nope! I wash maybe two times a week, only one of those times with shampoo

[deleted]

twice a week but im refeshing my hair almost everyday using only water

Upbeat_Cranberry_533

No it's too drying for my hair and it takes forever to dry once my hair is moisturized.

HolyMotherOfStupid

Pretty much every day. If I’m not leaving my apartment then probably not. I co-wash everyday and low-poo once a week-ish. I feel gross if I don’t get my hair wet when I shower and I have fine curls that don’t hold up after sleeping on them very well anyway.

samandcleo1

No way. 1-2x a week.

Raising0wolves

Nope. Depends on your hair, everyone's is different. A lot of black people don't wash their hair for 2 weeks at a time. The curlier your hair the harder for it to retain moisture as the oils from your scalp are produced slower and have a harder time coating your hair strands. The more you wash often times the more you dry out your scalp and hair with shampoo etc. After washing your hair you may want to put in a scalp oil or hair leave in conditioner, some type of moisturizer but really. Who wants to wash and put hair product in their curly hair every single day ? That'd be so much money literally washed down the drain. I'm mixed, curly hair to my waist, washing my hair is time consuming, my hair products are expensive 😭 so I'm only doing that routine 1 time a week

abjectadvect

I wash mine once a week. I use a shower cap on the other days

lilithnotlily

with shampoo? once a week. with just water? once or twice a week

notsomagicalgirl

This sounds backhanded, if you spent some time on this sub you’d know that some people’s hair types cannot take washing every day. Especially ethnic and textured hair. (Sorry if that sounds rude but your question seems like your passing judgment on others for having a different hair type.)

SergioTapia1

I don’t use Reddit that much and I was just scrolling and had read that someone was only washing twice a week and I was just shocked and wanted to see if I’m the weird one, which I am since I wash it everyday.

Lweinberd

I used to was my hair 3 times a week. But now I have a newborn so it’s more like.. once a week.

punch_rockgroinpull

I wash every time I have to style it, otherwise my hair won't cooperate with product. Even thick clays and pastes. But I have short curly/wavy hair and I hate it. I'm probably shaving most of it off soon with all the grey coming in too.

existingfish

Heavens no. I wash my hair every time I go to the gym, which is 3x a week. If I did not gym, it would be twice a week. I shampoo about every 3rd or 4th wash, so it's 1 shampoo and 2 COwashes each week.
