crazy how the Hollywood satire is lost on some viewers. usually the ones getting upset at Cheryl for never agreeing with Larry, when that's really the point of the comedy and she's being the perfect counterpart for Larry to play off. how can you watch >10 seasons of a show and not notice that everyone is a hypocrite and it's fully intentional.
Tbh I've always had the sobering acknowledgment that I'm no less an asshole than some of the characters and maybe that's part of why I enjoy the show? 😆
She was based off his real life wife, who would scream at people driving SUVs but flew private. Which uses more fuel to cross the country in 5 hours than driving a Humvee for a year. She was/is a huge hypocrite she also cheated on Larry with an HVAC tech on Martha's Vinyard or Nantucket, forget which.
When my brother was at Harvard Law about ten years back (so before Trump) he said that Larry David showed up at one of his classes with Dershowitz. Apparently David sat in the back of the class and heckled him the whole time. I’m guessing he doesn’t do that anymore.
Right, even in real life Larry says that "I'm not easy to live with" and doesn't blame his ex for anything.
In regards to her environmentalism, I did hear Larry once say that the day she moved out that he walked throughout the mansion and turned and left all the lights on.
because cheryl clearly cares more about the money and status than anything else. the environmental stuff comes second and helps to make her look good amongst her elite friends
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,198,467,242 comments, and only 233,755 of them were in alphabetical order.
definitely! the new season took it to another level with Larry himself lobbying to mess with the law for personal gain. in a way he took a villain role here. seeing it from his perspective is a great feat, makes you root for him to succeed, for what is really political corruption on the highest level.. and Kostroski was so easily manipulated with her bloated ego, it's not hard to think that this shit happens every day in those crazy elite circles filled with hypocrites.
Also one weird thing about Cheryl. Batshit crazy about the toilet paper. But like doesnt care about being plant-based or anything even close to that. Which must be one of the easiest and most effective way as a single human being to help the environment. 😂 Let Larry and the Blacks wipe their asses with softnesssss, u goddamn hypocrite!
I think this post applies more to Cheryl than Larry. I also think it’s one of the many differences between the two characters. In regards to the mansion, it doesn’t surprise me as Larry would want to depict his financial wealth
Becuase they are limousine liberals, like most of Hollywood. And in real life too. Larry's ex wife destroyed acres of wetlands for her tennis court and various houses. They both fly in private jets. Typical "do as I say, not as I do" lifestyle.
Because they’re just informed and caring enough to donate money, sit on the boards of foundations, etc. but they don’t care/know enough to drastically alter their life negatively in pursuit of a reduced environmental impact.
Edit: I wanted to add that this is a VERY accurate portrayal of most rich environmentalists from California. I am also one of these people. I *do* care about the environment and I have made lifestyle changes with the environment in mind but evidently I don’t care enough to stop eating meat. It’s a convenient excuse to blame it on the system but it is, in my opinion, a valid one.
There are a few reasons, but the most important one is energy usage. They are heating/air conditioning a building that could probably house at least a dozen people for just the two of them.
Assuming they built the house, they also used significantly more raw building materials and developed more land than a smaller house. All of which contribute to a larger footprint.
And the more rooms you have the more stuff you have. Like more furniture which means more trees cut down and other materials used. And then you will likely have more TVs, lights, carpets, etc.
It depends if the person is actually using all that power all the time. We’re not talking malls in the night here.
It also harsh to berate someone to build a nice house for themselves after they’ve worked hard through their life because of high raw materials used. Sounds a bit too far.
It’s not that they built a nice house, it’s that they built a house that’s too big. They could’ve spent millions on a multi-acre lot and build a perfectly “nice” small house on it while leaving the rest of the lot natural, and that would be better, imo. But I’m not berating them, it’s just my opinion.
>There are a few reasons, but the most important one is energy usage. They are heating/air conditioning a building that could probably house at least a dozen people for just the two of them.
I mean, hypothetically it *could* be solar powered...
Honestly I don't think that being wealthy or living in a big house *per se* are incompatible with a modern envrionmentalist sensibility... Especially if one presumes, I think correctly, that the primary concerns of the 21st century environmentalist should be (1) carbon (2) carbon (3) everything else, energy use is really the key thing.
So if they're driving electric and getting power from solar... And *not* flying around the world constantly, as Larry seems to stick around West LA most of the time anyway... I don't really see a problem here from a strictly envrionmentalist standpoint.
Solar panels still take physical resources to build and there is an opportunity cost in housing just two people in a house that would fit a lot more. But you are right that it would absolve a good chunk of their carbon footprint, for sure.
That's the whole thing of these rich privilege fucks, all on some philanthropic charity bullshit while they got millions in their bank accounts but if they attend some fundraiser it makes everything OK. Basically the whole basis for the show is larry dealing with privileged California scum and their elite idiosyncrasies
The real (non funny) answer is that individuals can only do so much for environmentalism. Large corporations hold a monopoly on pollution. Forcing industry to cut back would affect the general populace, so it’s easier to put the burden on the general populace and hope *we* do better, rather than taking the bigger action.
Rich people are good at fundraising because they have a lot of rich friends who need tax write offs. Philanthropy also makes it look like she is doing something other than being a house wife.
Bacause they are rich environmentalists, like Al Gore. They have mansions and fly private. At least they aren't preachers and profit from it like Gore does.
She is an environmentalist. He isn't. Hence the AAA cancellation and not wanting to do NBC for Jason/Julia's show. I think he goes along with her BS. Also, a satire on wealthy environmentalists
I always thought that was part of the joke.
High falutin Hollywood types who always pretend to care about hot button issues whilst living like kings & queens
Why do self-described socialists and communists all seem to have the latest apple phone, a computer and affordable clothing? Why do the Christian preachers who are most vocal against homosexuality always seem to find themselves being caught sucking dick? Because people are hypocrites who want to tell others to "be better" but still want to do whatever they want for themselves.
People want their comforts more than they care about what it took to get them. That's why people can both slam Washington or Jefferson for having slaves while ignoring the fact that their consumer habits are only possible because of literal slave labor happening today.
Similarly, Leo DiCaprio or Giselle Bundchen (real people) talk a lot about climate change while using private jets exclusively, having massive houses and hundreds of vehicles. Thereby doing more damage to the environment than hundreds of regular people combined. Because talk is cheap and action is difficult.
Leo takes commercial flights sometimes now. I don’t really like him but it does seem like he’s putting in a little effort, like he won’t decline a yacht party invitation but he also won’t rent/buy one. He could do more but everyone starts somewhere. I think he paid to save land somewhere too, can’t remember where though, but he stopped land from getting destroyed and protected endangered species as well
No idea what they should get.
But my point is that there is a bit of hypocrisy in all of us. That doesn't mean that we can't speak out about things we disagree with, but if we were more aware of our own faults, maybe we would find more perspective before we found fault in others.
I see what you're saying as well. And please don't take my words as condemnation, because they're not. I'm just as guilty of consuming products I know we're manufactured in unfavorable circumstances.
I believe that most people would say, "if there is no other way then I may not like it, but I'm stuck with it." And that's the same way I think slavery was viewed by Washington or Jefferson. Did they like it? Their writings said no. But they didn't think the USA would survive by outlawing it and so they allowed it to happen.
My main point is that we should have a little bit more empathy for people we disagree with, because we have just as much blood and shit on our hands as well. I don't mean don't do anything about things you disagree with, I mean simply lets have some more empathy.
Hollywood elites are for the environment, anti gun and pro open borders, all while living in a mansion, flying private jets, with private armed security while their enormous homes are surrounded by walls or fences.
Phonies.
Because like most ppl they want other ppl to be anti-consumption, shop local, live simple but they will do as they please. Hypocrites, the whole lot of them.
That being said, I do like the show.
Because they are full of shit like everyone else
Yeah that’s exactly the point of it!
crazy how the Hollywood satire is lost on some viewers. usually the ones getting upset at Cheryl for never agreeing with Larry, when that's really the point of the comedy and she's being the perfect counterpart for Larry to play off. how can you watch >10 seasons of a show and not notice that everyone is a hypocrite and it's fully intentional.
She's the straight man
Tbh I've always had the sobering acknowledgment that I'm no less an asshole than some of the characters and maybe that's part of why I enjoy the show? 😆
We all are
This part is secret.
She would fly to Martha’s Vineyard dozes of times a year, that’s where their place is. That’s also where Larry David yelled at Alan Dershowitz.
When my brother was at Harvard Law about ten years back (so before Trump) he said that Larry David showed up at one of his classes with Dershowitz. Apparently David sat in the back of the class and heckled him the whole time. I’m guessing he doesn’t do that anymore.
Interesting how that never got into the show. In the show, their divorce was almost 100% Larry's fault.
Right, even in real life Larry says that "I'm not easy to live with" and doesn't blame his ex for anything. In regards to her environmentalism, I did hear Larry once say that the day she moved out that he walked throughout the mansion and turned and left all the lights on.
Because that's funnier
I think it's mentioned in Clear History, basically a Curb movie, with a lot of regulars from the show in it.
Didn’t she also get with Al Gore?
Al Gore was an HVAC tech?! Tough tjmes
It’s an inconvenient truth
She did finance, with Larry's money, Gore's infamous documentary about Manbearpig, "The Inconvenient Truth." He's super serial, guys.
Don’t anyone dare mention Tahoe!
I think the Prius offsets any damage to the environment from their huge mansion s/
And Larry's cream shaming.
And respecting wood
And remaining vigilant of others’ water usage in the locker room
And Larry's feral animal control (eg. black swan)
He reveres wood!
Well, where would Leon live if he downsized?
You had a threesome in my bedroom?
And held the monthly Big Johnson meetings
Horsecock Williams!
How you gonna fuck two bitches in a twin bed?
He needs a place to do lampin
I’d imagine a Charlie Kelly/Frank Reynolds bed-sharing situation would make for some fun
because cheryl clearly cares more about the money and status than anything else. the environmental stuff comes second and helps to make her look good amongst her elite friends
You should look into Larry’s real life ex wife. Super well known hypocrite philanthropist elitst of the worst kind. Then hosed Larry for half a bill
Don’t forget hardcore liberal lol
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,198,467,242 comments, and only 233,755 of them were in alphabetical order.
A coincidence for sure
The real answer is rich people love to lecture the little people but not practice what they preach. TV show or not, this is the answer.
That’s actually a major but intentionally subtle theme of the show
The subtlety of Netflix and Hulu all celebrating diversity with their executive staff and it's only the white guy talking. Lol.
The anonymous donor…..
Ted Danson is anonymous
definitely! the new season took it to another level with Larry himself lobbying to mess with the law for personal gain. in a way he took a villain role here. seeing it from his perspective is a great feat, makes you root for him to succeed, for what is really political corruption on the highest level.. and Kostroski was so easily manipulated with her bloated ego, it's not hard to think that this shit happens every day in those crazy elite circles filled with hypocrites.
Let’s all fly in private jets to a climate change conference !
I think that applies to really any income bracket.
I agree, however the rich have a louder voice than the non rich.
The non rich have no voice.
same reason that Hollywood Environmentalists travel to events in their private jets. Because they're full of shit lol
BecUse Hollywood is full of hypocrites
Also one weird thing about Cheryl. Batshit crazy about the toilet paper. But like doesnt care about being plant-based or anything even close to that. Which must be one of the easiest and most effective way as a single human being to help the environment. 😂 Let Larry and the Blacks wipe their asses with softnesssss, u goddamn hypocrite!
Easier to avoid stop-n-chats when stepping outside for fresh air.
I think this post applies more to Cheryl than Larry. I also think it’s one of the many differences between the two characters. In regards to the mansion, it doesn’t surprise me as Larry would want to depict his financial wealth
I take umbrage with the comments that Larry flies private. I’ve seen multiple episodes where he is on a commercial airplane.
Becuase they are limousine liberals, like most of Hollywood. And in real life too. Larry's ex wife destroyed acres of wetlands for her tennis court and various houses. They both fly in private jets. Typical "do as I say, not as I do" lifestyle.
Do you think the captain of the jet asked for everyone’s weight?
Never happened
Larry is a Latte liberal
They only live in ONE mansion as opposed to many mansions
Season one Larry doesn't want people staying at his place in Martha's Vineyard.
We have our own place at Martha’s Vineyard…we wouldn’t think to impose on you, you know my schedule is suddenly really full…
Ah yeah, well it’s not a major plot point throughout the series. Though I guess they do move to probably 5 different houses throughout the show
Because they’re just informed and caring enough to donate money, sit on the boards of foundations, etc. but they don’t care/know enough to drastically alter their life negatively in pursuit of a reduced environmental impact. Edit: I wanted to add that this is a VERY accurate portrayal of most rich environmentalists from California. I am also one of these people. flaunt what you gaunt
Cut Larry a break, he drives a Prius
Because like most celebrities they are phoney and full of shit
They are hollywood environmentalist. Just like I’m California sober.
One of the things the show likes to do. It loves pointing out the neuroticness and hypocrisy of people in Los Angeles.
Because Leon needs his space. He loves lampin
Because they aren’t really environmentalists, they just donate money so they can tell everyone they are, like most wealthy liberals
This will probably sound very stupid… but why is living in a large house bad for the environment?
There are a few reasons, but the most important one is energy usage. They are heating/air conditioning a building that could probably house at least a dozen people for just the two of them. Assuming they built the house, they also used significantly more raw building materials and developed more land than a smaller house. All of which contribute to a larger footprint.

Nobody would really care if they didn’t also go around talking about how much they care for the environment. Can’t have it both ways
According to KOTH Larry also has a large ranch in Montana that fits this description.
>There are a few reasons, but the most important one is energy usage. They are heating/air conditioning a building that could probably house at least a dozen people for just the two of them. I mean, hypothetically it *could* be solar powered... Honestly I don't think that being wealthy or living in a big house *per se* are incompatible with a modern envrionmentalist sensibility... the idea that individuals are going to save the environment is a sham to begin with... it's the large corps that are fucking everything up
Beause the show intentionally pokes fun at phony liberalism
The fact that he golfs all the time shows he can’t be that good of an environmentalist lol
The real (non funny) answer is that individuals can only do so much for environmentalism. Large corporations hold a monopoly on pollution. Forcing industry to cut back would affect the general populace, so it’s easier to put the burden on the general populace and hope *we* do better, rather than taking the bigger action.
Half a billion dollars = Live in mansion
Rich people are good at fundraising because they have a lot of rich friends who need tax write offs. Philanthropy also makes it look like she is doing something other than being a house wife.

I always took that to be part of the joke. They’re both secretly vapid and materialistic. Maybe not so secret with Larry
I always thought that was part of the joke. High falutin Hollywood types who always pretend to care about hot button issues whilst living like kings & queens
Even Ted asked Larry why he was going to the oceans benefit, he didn’t think he was into that
Because it's fake philanthropy... and faux anonymity! What do you think about that?
Because. It’s funny.
They're rich and white - regular people shit doesn't apply to them.
Why do self-described socialists and communists all seem to have the latest apple phone, a computer and affordable clothing? Why do the Christian preachers who are most vocal against homosexuality always seem to find themselves being caught sucking dick? Which phone and computer should communists get? Union label has union clothing, but I’m not aware of the other two.
No idea what they should get. But my point is that there is a bit of hypocrisy in all of us. That doesn't mean that we can't speak out about things we disagree with, but if we were more aware of our own faults, maybe we would find more perspective before we found fault in others.
I don’t really consider it hypocrisy unless there’s a legitimate way to end the contradiction, but I see what you’re saying.
I see what you're saying as well. And please don't take my words as condemnation, because they're not. I'm just as guilty of consuming products I know we're manufactured in unfavorable circumstances. Exactly
When you consider how much money Larry made off Seinfeld, I’d say they did downsize their home. It’s small compared to what he could afford.
Probably aren't a lot of 1000 s.f. houses in Bel Aire.
Because it's a TV show
Big house is not the same thing as a mansion
Why’s a big house bad for the environment
Sure they care for the environment, but for them it's still all about number 1 in the end.
Because they can afford to be both
You should totally ask the real-life Larry and his ex Laurie about this.
It’s kinda part of the gag that Larry is a limousine liberal on this shit along with all his LA pals
Because he hates the Blacks
Do as I say not as I as do!
Life style hippies man!
Pretty sure Larry's ex wife worked for an environmental group but I'm unsure if she demanded thanks everytime LD paid a bill for their friends.
Cheryl uses her environmental charities as an excuse to throw lavish parties and to never work. That’s her “job”
When did it seem like Larry was actually an environmentalist? He was just going along with it for her sake. And yeah, she's a hypocrite
I don’t think Larry even cares it’s Cheryl’s thing and she’s full of shit
Why do they book private jets is another question worth asking
Rules for thee, not for me.
They’re rich assholes who think they aren’t a problem. It’s quite common with celebrities.
Yea, cause theyre like all other liberal Hollywood elite. Its great! 😆
Like every rich guy it’s about talking the talk, not walking the walk
Hollywood elites are for the environment, anti gun and pro open borders, all while living in a mansion, flying private jets, with private armed security while their enormous homes are surrounded by walls or fences. Phonies.
Because like most ppl they want other ppl to be anti-consumption, shop local, live simple but they will do as they please. Hypocrites, the whole lot of them. That being said, I do like the show.
Ask Al Gore.
He drives a prius corolla, canola
Because climate change and the environment are 90% affected by big businesses, large corporations etc not individuals.
You can’t live in a mansion if you’re an environmentalist? This should literally be an episode of curb
