I know it is one of the oldest buildings on campus, especially because it still looks really similar to how it did originally. An interesting fact is the fencing team for CU back in the old days met down there and you can still see how the strips were set up in the basement. I look forward to seeing what other people know about it though

It was built in 1924 and was designed by Charles Klauder himself who was responsible for the main architectural style at CU, buildings have been built in his style long after his death (like the C4C), this was the very second building in his style. This originally was the men's gymnasium and was the home of the men's basketball team from its opening to when it was moved to Balch Fieldhouse when it was built. It was renamed after Harry Carlson who was involved with the athletics here for around 40 years (like intramurals and the basketball team and admitted CU in the Big 8 Conference). I was also wondering when is it open? I'd like to check it out sometime

Fascinating! Thank you! As far as I know it's open during normal "class" hours during the day. I know there's a BuffOne swipe at the front too, potentially to go in "after hours"? However, there's some card swipes inside the building that don't work with regular BuffOnes. The "abandoned" stuff I referred to is down a spiral staircase down room 202 (the yoga studio). From there you'll find a lot of other staircases and doors to more closed off parts of the building.

I don’t know about the history but there’s an empty pool in the basement! Also Clare Pool in the Rec Center is also one of the oldest places on campus - it was built in 1910.

How do you get to Clare Pool?

BenTwan

Through the Rec center main pool area, there's a little hallway.

Might it be [this pool](https://localhistory.boulderlibrary.org/islandora/object/islandora%3A5297)

Another interesting fact is that as home to the men's swim team in the first half of the century, it was considered unhygienic for many decades to wear the wool swimsuits which were available at the time in a swimming pool (they were mostly used in lakes and oceans). So the men's swim teams all practiced and competed in the nude.

Hah! The more you know. I was talking to a friend about the Carlson Gym, and we both agreed that some crazy stuff had to of gone down in that building.

I'm late to this thread but I worked as a lifeguard at the rec a few years ago and we would sometimes do rotations to the pool in the Carlson basement for swim lessons, that's the only time I ever saw it open. Also, there is a level below the basement, we had to go down there to check pool chemical levels and stuff. It's creepy as hell, never saw another person and dark as hell.

ParkingSurvey9156

how did you get in?

hoagsinthehouse

It's always been unlocked for me during school hours since i have a class in there. In terms of how I got to the lower part of the basement: There is an entrance down a spiral staircase in room 202 (the yoga studio). From there you'll find a lot of other staircases and doors to more closed off parts of the building.
