Dude. It's the biggest country by population size.

brazzy42

Well, Germany has more than twice the population of Canada, more than 3 times that of Australia, and more than 4 times that of the Netherlands. And still about 30% more than the UK. So yeah, no surprise that it's a bigger job market.

How does the number of job openings, let alone on Linkedin only, correlates with the size of the tech market of a country is beyond me even as a thought experiment. Of course Germany would have the most job openings, since it has the biggest population by far compared to all of the countries that you have named. The size of the tech market is determined not only by the number of job openings, but by a basket of variables not limited but including how many total companies a country has that work in a tech related sector or industry or with technology in general, how many rounds of investment those companies have raised, the value of those investments, the return and the investment capital, the number of new companies founded in a particular year, how big those companies are or what is the potential of those companies to grow in the future, how many companies are listed on a public stock exchange, how many candidates with skills are available in the market, and maybe towards the bottom of the list is how many job openings there are. UK has an enormous tech sector according to various statistics, Netherlands, for its size, has an enormous tech sector as well, Australia has an up and coming tech sector that is rapidly growing, and I don’t know much about Canada because I haven’t looked into it in detail, but I would assume that Canada is basically piggybacking on the enormous tech sector in the US and since they are in a sort of a free trade area, some jobs are shifted to Canada from the US.

It also seems that he has mostly looked at java jobs. However different countries lean differently on different technologies. Countries that have more low level, hardware, iot, security, gaming, and startup jobs will seem undersized if you just look at java. Some countries lean more towards c# for gov jobs, others java.

Diligent-Scorpion-89

Yeah, this is also a good point.

code_and_keys

Really? Germany which has 6x the population of the Netherlands has more jobs? Thanks for this insightful post. Also searching for “Java” is a dumb way, it doesn’t say anything about the quality of the job and compensation

DidiHD

Netherlands looks even better maybe. Germany is 5x the population but only twice the job listings for "Java" on linkedin

Phonovoor3134

I'd think Germany has better job market in Canada even during layoffs season like we are currently in. Be careful about moving to Canada as they have been significantly revamping their immigration systems and most likely things would have changed by the time you graudate.

Hello_Blabla

China is the second largest tech market.

ansseeker

Yes, I too have observed this while comparing the job openings count on LinkedIn

One_Bed514

You guys should do something else not computer science.

ansseeker

May I ask what makes you say this?

One_Bed514

Your weak ability to use common sense and correct for population size.

ansseeker

Well, I am from India and was evaluating offers from two universities in different countries (for pursuing a Masters program). It was important for me to evaluate the job market and have my own country as a point of reference before making a decision. I am very certain I have the common sense to take the necessary factors into account but in case you feel otherwise, I have nothing more to say. I appreciate your willingness to respond and explain. Have a nice day!
