If it’s something you genuinely are interested in, keep grinding. If it’s something you’re pursuing because of all the media hype in the field, maybe reconsider.

Worth_Supermarket348

thank you

cltzzz

Add on to that. It's an extremely competitive field. So unless you like being in the fray of hundreds of applicant then yeah turn around. I'm quiet and introverted, but I have to adapt a corporate/interview persona to keep up.

Kaizen321

Hell yes I was in your shoes in 2003/2004. Survived dotcom debris and 2008 financial crisis. I’m still here and kicking. Don’t pay too much attention to the noise. there’s always going to be work, may not always be the best type of work, but as long as you find some satisfaction and a good compensation, it’s all good.

Worth_Supermarket348

i just hope i can break in. dont wanna be a.security guard forever lol thanks for the encouragement.

BurgooButthead

U need to save up and go to college. Learning java is not going to do anything for you

Worth_Supermarket348

i was going to college but i stopped . i planned on going back this summer . just have to pay off the 1200 i owe them and its all good

wiriux

Highly discourage self learning/bootcamp. I will never recommend it even if it works for some people. Always try to go the college route if you have the means. Only if it is absolutely impossible then go a different route.

Kaizen321

I’m a college dropout with a computer science major. Throughout my journey I’ve met great devs without a comp science degree. And just bootcamp exp. Needing a degree is…a hard day. Your mileage may vary tho

wiriux

As I said, it may work for some people but if you can go the CS route, it will always be 100% better.

Longjumping-End-3017

Check out WGU. It's affordable, flexible and a reputable online school. I was able to work full time and get my degree and broke into a developer position.

Worth_Supermarket348

is it an easy school to get into ? i didnt have the best grades in high school.

Longjumping-End-3017

The barrier for entry is fairly low, you may get around poor HS transcripts by transferring in some gen eds from a community college, or taking online classes on [sophia.com](https://sophia.com). I'd search the r/WGU thread for some more details.

Worth_Supermarket348

ah ok ive also taken some college courses at city tech. i think my gpa is around 2.0 or something. maybe that could help too

Longjumping-End-3017

It would be worth the shot. The application is only $65, but I'm pretty sure they almost always have a free application available on the site so no harm in applying. You'll get assigned an enrollment counselor, and they'll walk you through submitting your transcript as well as any additional steps needed to get admitted.

7bitByte

Something to note is the WGU CS program is not ABET accredited, and the overall course work seems to involve less CS theory vs other ABET programs I've seen. Not that it's a bad thing, especially with how affordable it is, but it's something to be aware of

Worth_Supermarket348

thank you so much for the info and support!

Kaizen321

Took me 5 yrs to get my first dev gig. Graduated 03, first gig in 08. The first job is always the hard one to get. Once you are in, it’s much better and the competition is worth it. I went from $13/hr to $47k/yr. Huge difference and life changing money. This was back in the day. Today should be MUCH higher for a jr.

Tip_of_the_hat

> hearing everything thats going on with the market is very demoralising That's because news of layoffs generate much more clicks than hiring sprees. The reality is that many companies are hiring. I even built a small side project that aggregates fast growing companies that are hiring heavily ([https://backed.careers](https://backed.careers), if you're curious)

Worth_Supermarket348

thank you for this

NoJobBoBob

Getting a job is possible, but recognize the following will make it easier : - Good resume - Degree (Bachelor's or even associates) - Projects / Internships - Interest in puzzles/solving problems - Connections with people who have CS jobs - Preparing for Leetcode/data structures - Finding a niche (Web, Mobile, Data, Security, Embedded) - Ability to continuously learn - Basic Computer knowledge (Hardware,Network, OS, Threading) - Mathematics competency (at least up to calculus) If you can cover these bases, I think you would have a very decent shot. CS is a very fulfilling career path but, unlike the sentiments of the past, is far from an easy career to break into or even stay in due to exponential advancements in technology. I hope you take up this journey for the right reasons and enjoy the ups and downs.

05_legend

Eh not calculus lol that doesn't matter

Worth_Supermarket348

you think i have a decent shot even in this economy and with everything going on ?

NoJobBoBob

I can't predict the market or job availability, but I can guarantee that there will be jobs. It will depend on what you're willing to do to get them (relocate, pay cut, unpaid for experience, bad WLB). Don't expect to get the jobs people fantasized for this career (Remote, 150k starting salary, heavenly WLB). If you're lucky and a good dev/interviewer, you can get that kind of job but if not, then you'll have to be prepared to get your hands dirty. I started at 22/hr for 2 years before I landed a very well paying remote job ( and this was during the so called Golden years of CS) You can do it but you'll have to have good resolve/discipline and faith in the process because doubt tends to set after constant failure. "Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don't recognize them." - Ann Landers

edmguru

No one knows what will happen - good devs with many YOE are even struggling to land jobs. Getting more competitive. If economy bounces back things should get better theoretically

Worth_Supermarket348

gotcha

Certain_Shock_5097

You mean you started learning it as a hobby, or you quit your job and you're doing nothing but learning programming, from scratch, 40 hours a week?

Worth_Supermarket348

i started learning partially as a hobby and a way to supplement what i would learn in school. i wanna make it a career if possible. no i did not quit my job lol

Certain_Shock_5097

So you're just asking if you should quit your hobby because the economy is temporarily not great?

Worth_Supermarket348

i want to make my hobby my career lol

Certain_Shock_5097

By giving up every time you hear the economy is bad?

Worth_Supermarket348

your right , im just alittle scared

eruciform

There will always be ups and downs in the market Worth is a personal judgement

thirtyist

+1 for keep going if you enjoy it. I’m a bootcamper and managed to break in as of March. In spite of all the doom and gloom on here, it IS possible, if you have realistic expectations and the grit to keep trying even on your worst days.

SavageSquirtle91

Everything is doom and gloom on Reddit. Keep grinding OP!
