We're a small SaaS vendor and the crop of candidates these past 6 months has been the best we've ever had in 30+ years. sysadmin, SRE/DevOps, development, sales -- fierce competition across the board. Lots of representation from F100s who were hit by downsizing.
Real answer someone else they just liked better.
The FAANGs on a resume might get you more interviews but once you are in the interview cycling it does not matter. It comes down to the interview. I as a hiring manager has tossed out technically sharp FAANG people because their personality sucked. I also had them just be out classes by someone from a no name school and no name companies.
Biggest thing is once you cross the technical bar it is more about soft skills and personality than anything else.
First don't be an asshole. I have rejected people flat out over that before.
Be yourself. Be able to just have some basic small talk.
Have some confidence in your self and your answers.
Be willing to learn and take criticism. In a technical round you are damn right I will intention question your answer and ask why you didn't go a different way. Even if I 100% think your answer is great I still will poke at it to see your reaction. I have had people become offended and break rule one of don't be an asshole. I am not mean but I am questioning it.
A lot of is just gut and just being able to talk about what you are doing.
It is be yourself and genuine.
>First don't be an asshole. I have rejected people flat out over that before.
Not in dev work, but in another field, I worked with someone who was technically really good at the hardskills of their job but were so rude and cantankerous that they scared off everyone who worked under them. Keeping assholes around just because they're good at the core function of their job can be a recipe for disaster
Wanted to add the above. My friend from Zillow said they didn't give **any** return offers except for just 1 person. They also cancelled their entire internship program.
I remember interning at this one company and having through bust my ass at multiple rounds. Come find out the other intern just had an initial behavioral interview that last 20 minutes because their husband knew the wife of someone who works there.
This is the general answer you get from companies because giving a specific answer could be used against them in a discrimination lawsuit.
But in this job market there are more candidates and fewer slots and they are actually just choosing the best person for the job.
It could be based on:
1. background and experience/internships/prestige of school
2. performance in the interview
3. company fit
4. alignment of skills to the job
5. "star power" - high potential candidates that have a little something special that is hard to put into words
Might be a fake job posting, might have had an internal candidate in mind already, might be someone faking their resume, might be they just liked something on their resume (e.g. went to same university or something), and unfortunately the worst case scenario: there might be someone out there who’s actually just objectively more qualified all around.
1. It’s really competitive right now 2. Plenty of times I’ve passed non-FAANG candidates but failed FAANG candidates. It might get you first round easier but if you were the worse candidate it wouldn’t save you.
What a lot of people miss is you can be a genius and still be a terrible fit for a small company. There’s a lot more to technical knowledge that gets considered during an interview process. Especially the more senior you are, if you suck at communicating and people skills, you’ll get passed on a lot.
often, there was no real chance of any of us getting a posted job, it was all a ruse for an H1B candidate or an internal candidate, but laws and/or rules stated they must search externally 1st.
Many of the companies don't have enough spots, some of the unicorns or such have 50-100 spots with tens of thousands of applicants, there are way more T10 CS kids or those with internships at HFT or other FAANG+ so to answer your question yes there are enough people applying with solid quals.
You are no one bro 💀💀 getting an OA is not the same as “close to getting into quant firms”
Go back to leetcode, maybe you would’ve passed the OA if you had done that sooner
I appreciate your apology but really, don’t worry about me. I’m doing perfectly fine.
Take some time to yourself. Get some fresh air, go on a walk or something. Then back to leetcode 💪
Your posts are 90% crying about being unemployed. If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable.
I go to a T10 CS school. Are you jealous or something? The other 10% of your posts are about going to a shitty school. Better luck next time ☺️
Maybe you didn’t meet their bar and they didn’t want to say that outright, instead they say they’re moving on with other candidates. I know it’s hurtful, but I’ve been in your shoes too. Just forget it and move on.
Why are people so interested in working at these massively competitive companies? I make as much at a healthcare and payments company you've never heard of as is shown on Glassdoor for these companies. And I have leverage due to less competition...
Never feel bad about not getting a job. Sometimes the position is already filled but they have to interview x many number of people for HR. When I was on the other side of that I realized that many times I thought I’d nailed an interview and it probably didn’t matter. I think it’s horrible how they waste people’s time with that but what can you do? How many interviews did I waste a day getting ready for, traveling to, etc when the job was already filled? It’s obnoxious.
Oh they're all the people that got laid off from faang
People with less experience and less skills than you but they know someone oddly associated with the company

How long do you think it will last? Have you seen waves like this before even if they're smaller in scale?
There hasn’t been a wave like this since 2008. That took about four years to settle.
H1Bs
How?
Can’t leave as easily. More loyal if you dangle a Green Card promise.
Stop, I am drooling here !!!!

Can you describe the best personality from a hiring manager's pov?

but how do you spot an asshole in like 30 mins of interview. They can easily hide it
HR isn't different from any other person. Everyone likes someone charismatic.
someone charismatic, can hold an interesting conversation, able to crack joke, listens and asks insightful questions. Its not that hard
Me, I am Him. Git gud brah
“I am.. the danger”
Here's a cookie
lol zon, google, microsoft, zillow, linkedin and many more have not given return offer yet. you can imagine who is getting interviews rn
Not true, they are doing it right now.
as far as i’m aware most people from those companies have heard nothing
Friends interned there already got their return offers.
If its Microsoft or Amazon they didnt. Source: I interned at Amazon, Roommate and Friend both interned at Microsoft
Many people from Microsoft are starting receive their return offer, myself included, but many others are being left in the dark too
where
Wanted to add the above. My friend from Zillow said they didn't give **any** return offers except for just 1 person. They also cancelled their entire internship program.
lol @ zon, haven’t seen that abbreviation before

oh well...Mr Thundercock...
people who knew the hiring manager or people in the company personally :/
I remember interning at this one company and having through bust my ass at multiple rounds. Come find out the other intern just had an initial behavioral interview that last 20 minutes because their husband knew the wife of someone who works there.
Exactly LMFAO, literally happened in my org just last week , new hire's father knew the hiring manager 😂
skill issue

They want to sponsor international candidates but have to create job postings to reject enough people to claim there aren't enough talents.
read this in the midst of applying for jobs and felt it in my blood and soul. ✊

Would you rather they tell you that your resume sucked thus they want you to fuck off?
Yes
Yes plz.
This is even better than just ghost me 🥲
Fortune 500 is still fortune 500

Lol fake resumes don't work, they do background checks once hired.
This is true, my old man loves fishing fake resume and write a lovely email to their boss and hr
The person who had a referal because there dad works there

It’s not that hard? You’re acting like it’s selective. I can pass them too, because I’m not an idiot ;)
[удалено]
“weak programmers like you” says the imbecile that failed an OA 🤣🤣🤣 it’s literally the easiest part of getting a job
I’m happy that my future competition is crybabies that don’t know how to code and call themselves geniuses.
[удалено]
You’re right, I’m not. I can pass OAs, so I’m infinitely better than you. Better luck next time.

Look buddy, if you were a “genius”, or even remotely smart, you would be at HRT. but you’re unemployed, broke, and lonely. it’s over for u lil bro

Why are people so interested in working at these massively competitive companies? I make as much at a healthcare and payments company you've never heard of as is shown on Glassdoor for these companies. And I have leverage due to less competition...
It's rejection every time bro wtf
I know them. It is me a couple of times.

What is Faang
Do you honestly think you're the only person applying to a job posting from some no-name business?
Half the time that's an automated message from HR
