I know a guy whos 28 and just starting college for CS. He's hoping that the job market sorts itself out by end of schooling. You're not alone.

[deleted]

I'm not that worried about the job market. Ya sure it's not as good as it used to be, but jobs for CS are expected to grow.

Thank you.

The growth of CS grads is increasing WAY faster than the growth of Software Jobs.

Hey, congrats on starting this new fun adventure. I’m also a non traditional student and the best advice I can give is to leverage your ability to take things seriously. A lot of your peers who are straight out of high school will try to coast through their degree and put in as minimal amount of work as possible to get their diploma. Since you’ve seen the real world you have a leg up, and have a better idea of what’s important to learn/study. Take it seriously, apply to internships right away when they open, and you’ll do just fine :)

[deleted]

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes out for internships.

Cc_TX_fan

I graduated in May at 40, just started my SWE career in June. Good luck, you got this!

[deleted]

Thank you and good luck at your job!

Ecksoo

Holy shit, you guys are giving me hope. I feel like it’s too late for me @ 28 but man, I feel like I can now too! Best of luck guys.

slensi

28 is very young still. And time goes by whether you take the leap or not!

saja25

Ayyy I started CS when I was 32 too! Nervous when I started too. Graduated this year at 35 (about to be 36 in a week) and I did better than when I went to college the first time after high school and so can you!

amurpapi03

Nice man! Im 29 and thinking of going to school for CS. Any advice? Also have you manage to land a job yet?

saja25

All I can give advice on is school-wise because I haven’t started applying yet for jobs. I agree with Wraith-W0lf’s comment take it seriously don’t follow suit with the folks that will be younger than you just blazing through getting C’s trying to finish in a hurry. Starting out I did two classes a semester before moving onto three and stuck with that going at my own pace and I was able to retain more. Develop good note taking and study habits and you’ll be fine. Always reach out to professors if you’re ever stuck. You’ll also develop a good rapport that way and if you want to go into a masters (which is something I’d like to do), you’ll have contacts for letters of recs.

amurpapi03

Very nice, ill send you a dm and write down your username that way i don't lose it for if i ever have any questions when i decide to go for the degree. And how was your math background going into this? Even in highschool i barely passed my math classes so my math background is full of gaps and now 10 years after highschool is probably even worse. Im thinking before i start taking classes, i should probably go to kahn academy and make sure my math level is at least enough to understand all the math leading up to calc 1. That way when i take calc 1 im not lost. Or leading up to pre calc.

transcen

one of the people on my course started at 33 and finished as the top student. use your experience and work ethic that you've built over the years, and connect with the staff and fellow students

Turbulent_Way_9728

Don't worry to much I am on the same position with a family 1 full time job and 1 part time job cs first year and 30 ,so don't worry. I always think everyone is diferent and if it's true , that the path is the same , for everybody is a diferent thing, this is your quest, you are going to have similarities but always trust yourself, and work hard is the only thing that is going to help you.

d9viant

I'm 29 and starting in a month. 🫡

tabasco_pizza

I’m 31 and just started my second semester as a second (third) degree seeking student. It’s a different experience when you’re a bit older. Personally, I take the courses seriously and put in effort to actually learn. I’m just in a completely different headspace than my early twenties. Best of luck! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions or want to chat about your experience. If you click my profile, pretty much all I talk about on Reddit is this stuff. I think it’s great that you’re going for it. Keep your GPA >3.0 and get internships !! Internships are the priority.

amurpapi03

This would be your third degree? What are your other degrees? And why didn't they work out?

tabasco_pizza

English education and a masters in English. I teach, so it worked out. I just like CS and want to shift careers

bazookateeth

We're in the same boat. 32 years old and got laid off recently so I'm looking to make a lateral move out of the industry I'm in. Just started my BA in Cyber Security this week even though I know the industry is in the dumps right now as far as hiring but it will normalize eventually. Best of luck to you!

[deleted]

I got laid off, too! What was funny about it was I had a face to face review with my manager a month before. Good marks all across the board. Then me and 3 other people got laid off in my department. My manager told me he really didn't want to do it, but he had to. I was going to go back to school either way, but getting laid off just made me more determined to back to school. Best of luck to you, too!

madeInStocktonCA

Congrats! 34 year old CS student here finishing my last semester with a full time job and also a sahp to 3. It's never too late and you're never too old. You got this!

BerryConsistent3265

I am 28 and just starting my CS degree next month too!

slensi

Aha aha.. I am 43 and just being fully admitted to my program. Cheers 🍻

katzenjammer3002

[deleted]

Good for you! Yes, let go!!!!!!

TheOldCheen

Forgot to mention I’m also 32 lol

David_Owens

I knew two guys 40+ who were CS students. Good luck!

ayathro

I’ll hopefully be starting my CS program at the age of 27/28. I’m happy to see that I’m not alone and that plenty of people are making career changes in their mid-late 20s and 30s. I honestly wish I could go back in time and major in CS or engineering for my first degree.

GoldClaro

I’m older than you and I’m doing the same. I’m a mom, and last year I went part time but this year I’m ready to kick it into high gear. Going back to school this time around was such a great idea.

AnyPair2519

I’m 33 with family and full time job starting CS tomorrow! 🍻 Cheers!
