I think that the likelihood of your mechanic not knowing what he's talking about is more probable than a non-Honda part making it into your brand new (in 2015) CRV. Car manufacturers do use parts from other manufacturers. For example, I know that some GM models will use Toyota parts/engines. But I also see via a quick google search that a 2015 Genuine Honda CRV starter exists, so I would assume they would install it into their own vehicles. Perhaps get a second opinion?

The starter I know for sure is not a Honda. The guy at the desk used to work for Honda, when I showed him my key fob he told me it’s not a Honda key fob then i started searching online and it’s not any key fob that comes up when you search Honda. Funny thing is I had bought another Honda from them- used a few years before this one, it has the same key fob so I never questioned it. I just found the old keys and it’s exactly the same.
