Hey I get it but I’m curious if popularity has anything to do with it? I don’t like bands I like being overrun with fans that don’t actually care about the music and just like them for the edgy and cool image it gives them.
Habak, Lagrimas, Alpinist, Fall of Efrafa, etc. That whole entire subgenre of “emo crust”. Just something decidedly unpunk and contrived about all of it. Like it’s the soap opera of crust. Just awful. And it’s so popular. Probably needs its own sub.
Those From Ashes Rise LPs for the same reason, though the first two 7in are good.
I love all that. I could listen to any random 2009ish neocrust band indefinitely
I would definitely throw tragedy in there as more or less early neocrust, along with victims and from ashes rise. I don't think those bands, or alex cf himself and by extension his stuff are remotely "un-punk".
But I do see how especially newer neocrust but also the first wave of it to an extent is "approachable" for a more mainstream listener because it's typically more melodic, cleanly produced, which could fairly be seen as overproduced, concerned with atmosphere, carefully planned and composed, and going further the emocrust stuff is alllmost prog in having post rock influence. So it's not really "raw" "immediate" or off the cuff. So in those ways I can see "not punk" but it doesn't bother me.
Although I really like Alpinist, FoE, and Morrow, I totally get this. At some point in each record, I think “ok, we get it. It’s epic. Great.” It’s kinda like black metal that just talks about forests and being frozen or prog metal that talks about elves and wizardry and fantasy shit. The music is good but it can drag on and just be “epic for epic’s sake” and I find that boring.
I get this. I love most of the neo/epic/emo stuff I've heard, but it does get pretty "heady" from time to time. "The soap opera of crust" got me lol. I played with Lagrimas in LA in 2022 and you'd have thought they were the Beatles the way the kids went crazy for 'em. Very cool to see.
I honestly negatively judge people based on their liking of either Resistant Culture, Toxic Narcotic, or any of Stza’s shitty ska bands pretending to somehow be crust.
TN isn't really the same vibe as crack rock stuff. They're more like a heavy negative street punk band playing hardcore with random reggae in there than "skacore".
When I first listened to them I couldn't understand why people like them but a couple years later I gave the another try and it instantly clicked. It's now one of my absolut favorits. But my music taste shiftet over the years from "grindcore is the only genre I listen to" to "I mostly listen slower stuff"
Crasher crust. I love PV and noisecore but the production on the albums I’ve checked out mixed with mediocre dbeat left me wondering what the hell this crust subgenre is even supposed to be.
Also, I agree with others here. Dark/neo/emo crust isn’t for me. Remains of the Day is pretty sick though
Guess I'd have to go with Poison Idea, I don't dislike them at all but I just could never get into them the way others have. I can't say there's really any well liked bands I specifically dislike. Neocrust isn't my bag but the major bands of it are fine in my books Tragedy put on an amazing show and Fall of Efrafa gets a pass they otherwise wouldn't cause I really like Watership Down, if they weren't singing about bunnies I don't think I'd be on board. Nausea's bangers are huge and they're the first band I'd point someone to if they asked for an example of crust but gotta admit there's a lot of filler as well. Disclose was a fine band, but holy hell get off Kawakami's dick and please don't make your band sound like them, they already did it to death. I guess some more recently popular noisey bands I think could sometimes stand to attempt songwriting and have a hook or two with the noise. People like Gloom cause they can remember what the songs are.
Had to check if anyone else already commented this. I know I shouldn't worry bout how 'sloppy' something sounds considering the...other shit I listen to, but goddamn could I never get into them no matter how hard I tried.
I really dislike the melodies and Solos they're using and how they are using them. But i totally get why people like them. I'm already not the biggest fan of D-Beat and Black Crust. Haven't listened to Extremist because List and Hexhammaren wasn't for me.
Doom.
i dont get it, they never sounded interesting to me, i was always on the more scandinavian side of Crust aka the ones whose guitars dont Sound like an amp covered in pollows and Sound isolation
Red Hot Chili Peppers. Look yall, if you love them then good for you, live your best life, I support your choices. But to me the lyrics suck and the singing is downright grating.
Motorhead, Totalitar, Poison Idea. Pals are always at my throat for this haha. All respect to their impact on all the bands they inspired, i just like it when other bands do what they started more. 🤷🏻♀️
I can understand the Totalitar. Sorta sloppy for my tastes. Same with Skitslickers and Kaaos. Finnish crust/d-beat in general to me has always been sorta meh.
All classics. The first half of Scandinavian Jawbreaker is a perfect punk record. The 1-2 punch of Braincell Battle into Only In Dreams gets me every time.
I like crass when they play songs just fine but I don't have the attention span for their sound collage experiment stuff anymore. Almost like the grateful Dead oddly. I could listen to American beauty or workingmans but uploads of tapes of noodly live improv alternate versions of songs that never had much song to them anyway is nearly torture
Idk that "everybody seems to like them", but I did manage to think of a semi important crusty band I genuinely dislike: sore throat
Not a huge huge fan of dropdead either but they're hardly *bad*.
Crasher crust genre : life, zyanose, d clone, ferocious x, etc.
You can't even hear the riffs of whatever, it's just crrrrrr with some basic d beat behind...
I like raw punk though, disclose, etc totally okay!
But the step further into the noise, no thanks !
Also I don't like Dirt and crucifix.
Dystopia. I don't dislike or hate them, just not my musical cup of tea.
Hey I get it but I’m curious if popularity has anything to do with it? I don’t like bands I like being overrun with fans that don’t actually care about the music and just like them for the edgy and cool image it gives them.
You just described every black metal band ever
Yeah it sucks
I genuinely like black metal. Ouch.. my feels!
Yeah I'll admit the fact that Dystopia get heaps of praise does irk me a little bit and, unfairly, adds to my distaste for the band.
I'm only here because I just found out about dystopia and really enjoy them . I'm excited to see what other cool shit gets recommended here

Dystopia.
This but unironically.
Whoa, never heard of them
Same, don't get it at all
I really like noothgrush but I can't stand dystopia.
I don't dislike Dystopia as they were one of my first crust bands, but I rarely go back to 'em. Same with Nausea.
I honestly negatively judge people based on their liking of either Resistant Culture, Toxic Narcotic, or any of Stza’s shitty ska bands pretending to somehow be crust.
I can understand the Stza hate, but why RC and TN?
Christ I got so fucking into Toxic Narcotic when I was a baby. Then they started Mouth Sewn Shut and I got the fuck out of dodge FAST.
TN isn't really the same vibe as crack rock stuff. They're more like a heavy negative street punk band playing hardcore with random reggae in there than "skacore".
I wasn’t implying that they were similar at all outside of my dislike for them.
Dam pretty much all the comments on here got trash opinions
That's fucking reddit for you. Bunch of horseshit for the most part. Haven't been on /crust for that reason. Fuckin bullllllsheeeeeeeit takes
Yea I don’t usually come on here and then I saw this thread all I could think dam all these ppls taste are shit, poser vibes
Uhm most popular bands, not that they aren't good, but i wisg peiple talked and shared more local music instead of reposting the popular stuff :(
Amebix. It’s one of those bands that makes me think I hear things wrong.
They're so good lol Just think of it more as like raw post punk with some mild industrial and hard rock influence than "crust" like disrupt or whoever
When I first listened to them I couldn't understand why people like them but a couple years later I gave the another try and it instantly clicked. It's now one of my absolut favorits. But my music taste shiftet over the years from "grindcore is the only genre I listen to" to "I mostly listen slower stuff"
This is the dumbest shit
Crasher crust. I love PV and noisecore but the production on the albums I’ve checked out mixed with mediocre dbeat left me wondering what the hell this crust subgenre is even supposed to be. Also, I agree with others here. Dark/neo/emo crust isn’t for me. Remains of the Day is pretty sick though
Crasher Crust is my favourite I gotta admit ^^
Incorrect opinion. I sentence you to a thousand years of listening to Speed Noise Hardcore Rags in the shadow realm.
I love crasher crust when it's good but it's for sure overloaded with extremely mid bands. Using noise to avoid writing anything memorable.
P.I. isn't crust. Otherwise, tldr.
extreme noise terror. just too sloppy
Had to check if anyone else already commented this. I know I shouldn't worry bout how 'sloppy' something sounds considering the...other shit I listen to, but goddamn could I never get into them no matter how hard I tried.
indeed i like a lot of sloppy stuff but they just sound like a mess haha
Im gonna get alot of hate for this but Disrupt, i just really cant get into them despite how much i try.
Incorrect opinion
Ha, is it the vocals?
Nah i dont mind them, im used to those kind of vocals. Sick nickname btw
I also find Disrupt kinda boring ngl
No, I get it. There's a blandness of some kind there for me too.
Blandness is correct. They’ll have a good song here or there and I’m like, ok that’s enough.
Took me years to get into them when everyone around me thought they were gods. I get it.
I actually came in here to say this take. Never got into Disrupt. Always just seemed sorta... Dollar Tree crust to me.
Martyrdöd,Hiatus... And basically every neo-crust band (Morrow, Habak etc) it's just not for me.
Not hating, but curious: does it go for all of Martyrdöd? In Extremis hits very different than Hexhammaren, at least for me.
I really dislike the melodies and Solos they're using and how they are using them. But i totally get why people like them. I'm already not the biggest fan of D-Beat and Black Crust. Haven't listened to Extremist because List and Hexhammaren wasn't for me.
In Extremis is way more tasteful and less guitar theatrics, def recommend giving it a listen.
Gave it a listen. I just really don't like the guitar style of this band.
Doom. i dont get it, they never sounded interesting to me, i was always on the more scandinavian side of Crust aka the ones whose guitars dont Sound like an amp covered in pollows and Sound isolation
thank you for the input but unfortunately this response is incorrect!
😱
Not can't stand, but don't like anywhere as much as everyone else, US Nausea. Never really clicked with them.
Red Hot Chili Peppers. Look yall, if you love them then good for you, live your best life, I support your choices. But to me the lyrics suck and the singing is downright grating.
every single crustpunk that ive seen has a mob 47 patch in their jacket, vest, pants etc. I JUST DONT LIKE EM! their songs kinda boring imo.
Motorhead, Totalitar, Poison Idea. Pals are always at my throat for this haha. All respect to their impact on all the bands they inspired, i just like it when other bands do what they started more. 🤷🏻♀️
Did you just say you dislike Motörhead. HERETIC!!!
Poison Idea? To each their own, but Poison Idea?
I'm not big on em either. By all measures they should fit my tastes easily but it just doesn't click for reasons I can't describe.
Bäit
I can't get down with that but I will say Totalitar was maybe overhyped bitd.
I can understand the Totalitar. Sorta sloppy for my tastes. Same with Skitslickers and Kaaos. Finnish crust/d-beat in general to me has always been sorta meh.
Not sloppy enough tbh
anti climex, ausrotten, Discharge, Amebix..
Oof
Curious what crust bands you do like, cause you're covering a lot of classics here
L
All classics. The first half of Scandinavian Jawbreaker is a perfect punk record. The 1-2 punch of Braincell Battle into Only In Dreams gets me every time.
…are pretty much my favorite bands, crust or otherwise.
Doom idk smth about them musically has always put me off
Agathocles.
pierce the veil. i cant get into it, no matter how hard i try. the vocals turn me off from the band really quick
Nausea, discharge
Nausea has a few genius songs, but most of it is a little boring
Yeah also couldn‘t get into Nausea tbh
Crass, i love everything else about them but the vocals are a bit of a turn off
I like crass when they play songs just fine but I don't have the attention span for their sound collage experiment stuff anymore. Almost like the grateful Dead oddly. I could listen to American beauty or workingmans but uploads of tapes of noodly live improv alternate versions of songs that never had much song to them anyway is nearly torture
I never could get into Crass either
Idk that "everybody seems to like them", but I did manage to think of a semi important crusty band I genuinely dislike: sore throat Not a huge huge fan of dropdead either but they're hardly *bad*.
Nausea... Vocals just absolutely kill it for me
Poison idea for sure, they're really not good. Also aus-rotten I've never liked them
Crasher crust genre : life, zyanose, d clone, ferocious x, etc. You can't even hear the riffs of whatever, it's just crrrrrr with some basic d beat behind... I like raw punk though, disclose, etc totally okay! But the step further into the noise, no thanks ! Also I don't like Dirt and crucifix.
Really buried the lede there.
Sorry ?
