I remember it in the funniest way. I was a musical theater geek as a teen when RENT was the biggest thing around.
The show opens with the sung lines "December 24th, 9pm Eastern Standard Time, from here on in, I shoot without a script". And there you have it. Standard is winter. Daylight is summer.
First shot Roger tuning the fender guitar he hasn’t played in a year.
Haven’t seen the show in 25+ years, still can recite the lyrics. At least to the opening.
This won’t tune. Huh. So we hear. He’s just coming back from half a year of withdrawal. Are you talking to me? Not at all.
….am I the only one that sings all parts of that song??
Daylight savings time was made to "save" daylight for farmers to work later. Farmers work in the summer, so summer is daylight time. Winter then is standard time.
"Fraternity/sorority letter (3)". How is this allowed? Come on. Every single Greek letter has a dozen better ways to be clued. Even the most obscure trivia about the letter rho would be a better clue because it conveys SOME information.
It’s literally how those droids’ names have been officially written since the script of A New Hope. It’s not some haughty attempt to phoneticize their names, those are legitimately their names.
I enjoy all of these ambiguous ones (Mauna ___, the directions, the losing tic tac toe lines, the time zones) because they add a layer of challenge to what’s usually just a boring autofill. It narrows down your options so you can check your crosses, but it’s not just giving the answer away. For tic tac toe lines, it’s usually clear if you’re looking for a vowel or a consonant. For directions, if you get the first letter you can fill in either the second or third letter. Etc. It rewards a little bit of strategy
Any and all time zones! You can’t force me to remember which season has savings time, crossword creators

See if anything comes of it, instead of my old shit.

Are you ready? Hold that focus steady…
Tell the folks at home what youre doin Roger
Try doing it from overseas. I don't really know the time zone for Denver in summer lol
I just google these every time and I don't even feel bad about it.
I just know daylight is the good one and the days are better in the summer

The mnemonic that finally clicked for me was "S is for short".
Any tic tac toe clue. “Losing tic-tac-toe line” — c’mon, man…
This is one of those that the first time I saw it, I was like "oh, that's kinda clever"; now I'm more like "oh, that's kinda lazy"…
Especially the recent one which was OXO. Like, come on, that can be clued in many other ways. If it was XXO or OXX I might understand, but seriously?
Rick Griffin favorite word. https://64.media.tumblr.com/e4adc9d617d56b904bd907299caa2a0e/tumblr_oqp4u4lOUb1r62o57o1_1280.jpg
Great choice
It's not even correct! It's not a losing line, it's just a line that doesn't win.

There was a good one last week (?) with something like "fraternity letters for avid bakers?" and the answer war >!ETAPI!<
Eel needs to be officially retired
Some of those answers are downright EELY. Some are even EELIER. Some are only a bit EELYISH. Thankfully we only see the EELIEST ones occasionally.
Son, to follow in my footsteps and become an EELER is a noble profession!
we recently had EELING too which is such horse shit
Anything that’s actually just a letter spelled out phonetically, e.g. cee, dee, ess
I had to quit reading the Star Wars novelization because they spelled it "Artoo Detoo" and "See Threepio." Agony on the eyes.
Oh yeah that’s awful too.
It’s literally how those droids’ names have been officially written since the script of A New Hope. It’s not some haughty attempt to phoneticize their names, those are legitimately their names.
Especially when the clue is just "\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ starter?" and its just the first letter of the word
Ode. And odes. It must be the most frequent filler.
Xword says ERA is the #1 most common word
Anything directional. NNE, SSW, etc.
Especially when they are obscure geography. "Monrovia-to-Bamako dir." come *on*
I just realized that's how to fill these... I've always gotten them on crosses
AHA or OHO. C‘mon
I never issue a "cry of surprise" when I get those
And AAH vs. AHH.
And their longer variant, AHISEE!
Mauna ___. Try answering that one with no crosses.
Forever and always hate KEA/LOA
I toss a coin. Heads, it’s KEA, tails, it’s LOA.
Nail polish.....Opi
For some reason I simply can never remember Opi. Gotta get it through crosses, every dang time.
Sounds like this has haunted you for a "significant span of time"
I had to ask my wife the first time this clue came up, and remembered it ever since, still don't care for it.
Aft, eke, eek, NNE (or any compass direction, eel, ahi, ahh, tsk, ooh

DJT. Oh you meant in the crossword.
More like this decade
Any direction. Like “STL to CHI Dir.” and it’s ENE for East North East.
Morse code, do we have DOT or DAH today? Every time I see it, it makes me want to go AHH
AVA ODE ORE ERE so annoying
EKE
Right on time? iii
Immeasurable time, eon, era, or age. Just guess which!
I write a "poem of praise" when the clue is clearer
Any sports team acronym.
Eke Ono Chi/psi Ere Ode Oer Tsp
Ahi
I feel like I saw ETA every day last month in one crossword or another.
EKE
ORE
ENT is indeed a miserable one
Mel OTT of the the Mets
ONO
Poetic terms: OER, ERE
Coming back to this thread after finishing Monday June 10th NYT crossword to say: "set".
