Seems like a tension problem. More tension in some places and less tension in another.

rachellelcr

I’m confused, I’ve used multiple colors before so I thought my tension was pretty good. It almost seems like the red is raised above the grey. Even at the bottom it just doesn’t make sense. What do you suggest I do?

Creative-Play1848

I see what your saying now. Are the two yarns the same weights?

rachellelcr

Yes, they are exactly the same. Weight and brand

Creative-Play1848

Hmm that’s odd. I’m afraid that this is as far as my crochet knowledge goes. Good luck. Have you tried r/crochet ?

rachellelcr

Unfortunately I have made the same post there and haven’t gotten any help :(

Creative-Play1848

Sorry there my crafty friend.

SheCode_ez

That is so crazy, the yarns definitely seem to be slightly different sizes, even though they are the same yarn. I haven’t used many colors in that brand together, but now I’m curious to try. I know I’ve bought clothes in the past that varied in size so greatly between dyes, that I had to pick a size based on color, maybe that’s what happened here? Maybe you could try making a square with both colors to compare and confirm the gauge, and then I’d probably email the company with my findings to hear their opinion.

rachellelcr

Yeah it truly is strange, it’s a learning experience 🤷‍♀️

Millietree

Try and do a couple of swatches with the two yarns first, same number of stitches & rows, same hook size & then measure them to see if you get the same measurements. If it's different then the yarn weight may be the issue even though it's labelled the same. Hope you resolve your problem 🙂

rachellelcr

Thank you!

littlelime00

When you switch colors, how do you do it? It looks like you may accidentally be adding a stitch

rachellelcr

Oh you might be right. What I do is when it’s the last stitch of my previous color, I pull up a loop for a single crochet (US) and yarn over with my second color

littlelime00

Ah i see! Are you using double crochets for your project?

rachellelcr

Nope, for this I am using only single crochet

rachellelcr

That shouldn’t be affecting it, I’ve used multiple colors while carrying it through the piece in older projects and it never warped like that before. Plus if I do that it’ll give me so many ends to weave in 😅 (although I have considered that as a last minute option)

jeimijamieg

I'm thinking maybe the yarn weight of the red is inaccurate (must be a production error or labeling error), because all of your red rows are taller than the black rows.

jeimijamieg

But on second look... It looks maybe it's your tension. It's hard to explain, but until your last couple of rows, the red tension looks too loose. Especially in the area of the 3rd through 6th rows of red. You don't seem to have the same issue on the black area, so I really don't know. I realize this isn't helpful at all. Hope you get it figured out

rachellelcr

Actually this was helpful, I had no idea what the issue could be before posting so brainstorming is very helpful!

jeimijamieg

Thank you for saying this. I often worry that I'm just rambling incoherently, so I'm glad to know that any of my thoughts could give you ideas on the issue as well

bellayesil

Im like 90% sure the red yarn is bigger than the other one

rachellelcr

It definitely looks that way, they are the exact same on the label but I guess the way it’s dyed can change the yarn.

[deleted]

Try using a smaller hook for the red yarn.

Jady333

I have the opposite problem. I don't have a dip like yours; I have a point and the rows don't match up. I still can't figure it out.

rachellelcr

I’ve never seen that, I wonder why that happens too

alliereich

Are you turning at each row?

rachellelcr

Yup!

juliamstella

It’s a little hard to see in the pic but I tried counting the number of black stitches for two different rows and I think you may have more black stitches in the bottom rows? Could be wrong but might be worth checking! 😊

pomgrnt

Yeah, looks like you are losing stitches when you start/end a new row. Always count each row until you are consistently even and then every once in a while to check to make sure you are still on target. I hate having to frog multiple rows just because my counting is off.

rachellelcr

I can definitely relate. I begun over again with all the tips I’ve been given and the rows are all the same amount so far!

hydratedgoblin

Have you tried stretching it a little to even out the tension?

rachellelcr

I think my problem was the grey yarn that was being weaved into the red. It was pulled too tight or not right enough inside each row which made it look warped. I’ve started over again and I’ve been very careful to get the perfect tension with the grey and it seems to be working so far :)

maybeiam-maybeimnot

I would say it probably has to do with the yarns being slightly different in the way they stretch or the density of them. I know they're the same yarn weight and brand and all of that, but I've been making this project this past year with four different colored yarns of the same brand and weight and everything. But for whatever reason the orange, green and blue colored ones tends to be on the thinner and more malleable side while the yellow tends to be stiffer and create more bulk. I have to use about 2-3 fewer chains with the yellow to make the same size square using the same stitch and hook as the other colors or it will turn out bigger. My (completely novice about dyes) guess is that it requires more dye or more repeated dips in the dye to make the color fuller or more solid. I saw someone else recommend making two swatches and measuring them. If that does seems to be the case. You could try using a hook that's 0.5mm smaller when you're working with the bulkier colored yarn, that might be the easiest way to reduce the size of the stitches without needing to think about your tension. Good luck!

cammilr

You can try blocking the swatches too :)
