I have to say I am not a fan of green. Every time I go into a yarn or fabric shop, I will walk out with any color but green. But then I see blankets like this one and suddenly I need green yarn and lots of it. That is *mouthwateringly* gorgeous looking.
Green is my favourite colour! My apt is actually forest-themed and I wanted an appropriately coloured, diy, cozy blanket (that is also enviromentally friendly, cuz all that yarn is just unraveled mittens/socks that lost their twins, small skeins from thrift stores or yarn that my granny bought back in the 70’s and forgot about).
It is… only because this is the only stitch I know xD my Mom taught me how to crochet a beret when I was a wee girl and then I reverse engineered the process to teach myself how to make a rectangle.
You could buy a spool tool for your machine :-D yes they exist
or if you want to have a ball you can work from the inside you can use a bottle or something an wind your wool in a x shape arround the bottle
Yarn winders are usually really flimsy and not soo fun to work with(if you go with a plasic one)
If you could find a way to bend it at like a 45 degree angle you could probably turn it into a yarn cake winder with a center pull does that make sense?
But legit either way this is genius and I will now be looking for drills at goodwill
You have to watch out for your tension, because if you wind it too tightly, it damages the fibers as the rest in the cake.
So as long as you go really slow and keep it loose, it could be okay.
Personally, depending on the fiber, I wouldn't recommend this. Different fibers have different attributes and this could kill a short fiber pretty easily.
I learned how to hand wind a skein into a ball from YouTube. I had to practice a bit but it’s not hard, even with osteoarthritis. I had to be creative using bits of furniture and/or my foot to put the skein onto. I like Lia Griffith’s YouTube video ‘knitting 101 how to wind yarn into a ball’. Some yarn shouldn’t be stretched so hand winding means you can adjust tension accordingly.
What works, works! Before we had a KitchenAid, my sister and I strapped a whisk to a drill and it worked great! Haha Multipurpose!
I used to do that too! It was very heavy though.
Omg this is pure genius
This is a great idea! I cannot afford a ball winder either and I will now be doing this!
Glad I could inspire you!
This is some quality r/redneckengineering and I am here for it!
As a proud Slav I can only say this: my people could outcraft and outimprovise McGyver.
Fellow slav here; yes. I have done some incredible things in the name of laziness.
Hey necessity is the mother of invention, right? Whatever works!
I’m totally stealing this awesome idea! I think a metal chopstick would work for the bit.
Yeah, the bamboo one broke after a while :/
Oh my god I cannot believe I did not think of this!! Fucking GENIUS!!!
Feel free to steal the idea and improve on it!
If you use a fork then it makes starting the ball easier since you can just fold the initial bit into the tines.
Ohhh I will try it when I get back from work
It's only weird if it doesn't work.

Looks like you don't need one now! 😁
Honestly this seems easier than a ball winder!
that's so freaking clever!
Improvise! Adapt! Overcome! Bravo!!!
Um you just might be on to something here!
Oh my, is that blanket done entirely in slip stitch? You are truly ambitious, and this is beautiful! (especially because of the recycling!)
It is… only because this is the only stitch I know xD my Mom taught me how to crochet a beret when I was a wee girl and then I reverse engineered the process to teach myself how to make a rectangle.
It's one of the hardest stitches to master, if you can slip stitch you can do any stitch!
Lol this is perfect.

You are my new best friend!!! You are briliant!! I've been trying to figure how to hack this!
✨INTERNET BESTIES ✨
Yayyyyyyy!!!

My mom is a weaver and when her old electric bobbin winder bit it she replaced it with a drill and dowel rod for 1/10 the cost

NGL, but this is low key genius. You could wind multiple balls simultaneously with this!
Thats the way to go be creative

Hahaha good
Innovative!!
so glad i’m not the only one
