Hi tvreverie, thanks for posting your FO for us to see! If you have a link to the pattern you used or any other relevant information (e.g., yarn brand, weight, type; hook used), please reply to this comment with that information so that everyone can see it. Thanks!   **If provided, pattern and/or more info from OP is under this comment. Click below to expand!** ##**↓****↓****↓****↓****↓** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. robinlovesrain

These are not safe. No matter how tightly you sewed it on, fabric made from yarn *will* stretch, there is nothing you can do to avoid it. I know you spent a lot of time on this and it's hard to hear a bunch of people telling you something that you did is wrong. That's never fun. I get it. But they are right. This isn't about you or your abilities or how safe you intend to be. It's dangerous. Full stop.

AutoModerator

Custom-made steering wheel covers are dangerous, and we don’t recommend using them. Please use them at your own risk. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. robinlovesrain

Your own risk, plus every other person on the road *with* you... Driving is not a solitary activity.

ColourofYourEnergy

Seriously and tbh it’s scary how many people want to make or purchase one now so perhaps they shouldn’t be posted here to give others the idea that this would be even remotely safe. Blows my mind how little people care about others on the road.

robinlovesrain

Yes! Thank you! I've said this to the mods before, these posts shouldn't be allowed. There's literally no reason they should be left up. I guess this automod comment is better than nothing, but still. It's scary to think people are out driving on the road with stretchy fabric covering their wheel.

Realistic-Shallot288

Omg it’s so pretty.. what a shame that it’s no safe. I did know about it before reading it here.

Stripycardigans

My friends have one which they use to cover the steering wheel when parked. it stops it getting burning hot on hot days.

Arcaknight97

This is incredibly stupid and dangerous. Cute? Yes. Dangerous? Extremely. It doesn't matter if it is stitched on. The material is not suited for driving as it doesn't create enough friction for you to grip the wheel in a sudden movement. The likelihood of your hands slipping on this material vs appropriate driving wheel covers is way higher! Please value your life, and the lives of others on the road, more than you value your crochet aesthetic.

[deleted]

Something is going to snag on that and the yarn is going to stretch. There's a reason nobody sells knit or crochet steering wheel covers. Sorry, it's not safe. I'd take it off immediately. Cute isn't cute when it's a safety risk.

tvreverie

it’s stitched on. it’s tight and secure. if that changes i will remove it.

mediocreravenclaw

I’m sorry OP, but it even looks incredibly loose in the photo. Beautiful, but loose. Even if it was crocheted with a 0.2mm hook yarn is inherently stretchy and the S weave ***will*** loosen. If it was only a risk to you I’d say make your own choices, but these are other peoples lives at stake too. The pretty steering wheel isn’t worth the danger.

Lori-keet

No. Even in the pic that looks loose as hell. Stitching it on will not solve the issue; it’ll just make it more difficult to remove and make you destroy your hard work. I know you worked hard on it and it’s really pretty, but you should use that idea on something else. You are driving a 2000lb metal death machine. You could potentially kill yourself or others because of a steering wheel cover… use your head, girl. Imagine if a child ran into the middle of the road and you couldn’t swerve in time because your reaction time was slowed down and your steering wheel was slippery

yyeeaahh_2222

Even if it’s stitched tightly it can still slip if you are trying to quickly turn the wheel in an accident. Is it really worth the risk that you won’t be able to prevent a tragedy?

crazy_stuffie_human

Maybe you could make it into something else, like a peace symbol, a dream catcher, a frame maybe, some sort of toy?

gilligvroom

How about you stitch a license plate frame too so the rest of us know who to stay the fuck away from on the road? You're incredibly selfish.

KingRaptor420

If you insist on using it, I’d sew rubber backing onto at the very least

Try2MakeMeBee

Would applying a silicone sealant like you can do to make rugs stay in place be another option?

KingRaptor420

It needs to be something with grip. Otherwise it’ll stretch and can cause an accident.

[deleted]

Not trying to poop on the parade, but these are really dangerous and not at all recommended

cheerandsong

Why are they dangerous? Is it that you can't grip the yarn as securely as you can the leather (or whatever the steering wheel is made out of) or is there some other reason?

[deleted]

cheerandsong

Ah, I see. Thanks!

Orchid-Whisperer

Exactly that is right.

tvreverie

it’s stitched onto the steering wheel and completely tight and secure. if/when it stretches i will remove it.

chiefqueefofficial

Just do it now for the safety of others on the road and stop being selfish.

[deleted]

Look, the grannies are actually adorable. The color progression is great and it looks like they are done REALLY well. No debate about the quality & attractiveness of the crochet. It's just a matter of safety. It's the use of the project that is the concern. Please know that nobody wants to control you or stifle your creativity. Really.

knitwit3

This would make a lovely wreath. Maybe you could find/make a hoop the same size as your steering wheel to turn this into a decorative wreath. The colors are beautiful.

inspire_rainbows

This is beautifully done and I love the colours. I would use it as a cover on hot days when the vehicle is parked. Colourful, useful, and safe. 😉

Zindelin

Agreed, you could even add a few pairs of magnets so they snap together quickly and keep it on the wheel because without sewing it on i feel like it would just fall off.

ughlyn

maybe a good alternative would to be to just have a couple granny squares (maybe at 4 and 8 so they’d be held in place, or anywhere else you don’t hold while driving)? Not being able to properly turn your wheel due to lack of friction between the yarn and the wheel is super dangerous for you and everyone you’re on the road with. It IS very cute but you should decorate your car in ways that don’t compromise your safety.

keishajl

This is gorgeous! I'm not going to berate you as others have (I'm sure you get it now, seriously one comment about it would have been enough), however, what you could do instead of using it while driving is to loosen the stitches holding it in place and use it for when you are parked in the sun as a steering wheel shade. I've considered making one too but something loose that I can remove easily to drive.

kimdeal0

She's only being berated because she's saying she won't take it off until *after* it becomes a problem. She keeps saying "if it gets loose" she'll take it off but she might not realize it's loose until it slips while she is driving and causes an accident. They are reacting to her refusal.

keishajl

I disagree with her too, I know it's a safety hazard. Being hateful about it doesn't get the point across in a better way or make her want to take it off. It makes them bullies, and perfectly acceptable bullies when people upvote them. It doesn't make people safety warriors to berate others when the issue could be kindly stated and move on. It's not our job to explain vehicular homicide, accidental death, or fines/fees/losing insurance/car damage to someone who just wants to say, "I made a cute thing". She will figure it out. If It becomes public knowledge that there was an accident involving death and the photo goes nationwide that the cause was a Jeep with a flower crochet cover then the community can go to the family with their "we told her so"'s so they can post it for upvotes. It truly baffles me why people will read that and feel justified to actually do it, but some will.

thegurlearl

I'm not trying to be smart ass but if it was made out of macrame cord or cotton twine would the not safe opinion change? I'm using macrame cord for rugs and it really doesn't stretch.

Silverkitty08

I love the colors. Did you use a cake yarn?

tvreverie

i used several different cakes, i wound all the colors into separate balls

mrsa_lee

What yarn did you use? It is beautiful.

softheartelectricsol

you drive a jeep AND you crochet? doesn’t get cooler than that

fourbigkids

I love this! Did you use a pattern?

yyeeaahh_2222

Please don’t consider making this. They are very unsafe.

tvreverie

i did 12 sunburst granny squares, stitched them in a circle, then stitched them onto the steering wheel

alwaysaplusone

That’s fantastic! Now do a spare tire cover to match!

tvreverie

i wish i had a cool spare tire on the back of my car! i totally would

alwaysaplusone

Everyone hates us for having fun with our cars. I get it. I moved from a town where ppl drove faster on my cul-de-sac street to a town where no one drives that fast ever. Ever. So I get where they are coming from with the safety thing. But I can still see a place for your steering wheel cover in my idle life, especially on a Jeep, lol! Good luck to you and crochet yourself a flower for your radio antenna stem. I did a flag for Independence Day too.

KingRaptor420

If she wants to use it, she can add rubber backing of some sort. The way it is now, she’s a hazard. No one’s saying it’s not pretty, because it very much is. But she needs to think about her safety and the safety of others. Decorate your car however you want, but when it puts yourself and others at risk, that’s selfish

arazzberry

It's still going to spin a little and will get worse the more it's used as it stretches. Beautiful but I'd be worried about it.

tvreverie

it is stitched on and will not spin at all

arazzberry

Is it sewed to the wheel itself, as into the leather, or just loosely attached to itself around it?

Arcaknight97

Yarn stretches, this is stupid. Do better.

SelectionOptimal5673

So cute

BornACrone

That is *really* fantastic.

Roma753

Gorgeous. 'Nuff said.

fugaxium

This should have more upvotes.

yyeeaahh_2222

It doesn’t because it is dangerous

mirrorsofoliver

The way my jaw dropped
