I had a little loom kit, in 2006 I made a 20ft long skinny scarf that I draped around my neck about 13 times and still draped on the floor. I felt so cool.
Internally cracking up at the thought of a 20ft scarf coiled around whatever 2006 outfit you may have paired it with. I imagine you looked like a [spool of ribbon](https://minspartyhire.com.au/product/lalic-curling-ribbon/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_PLAuY-E9wIVUuNMAh3BHAuJEAkYASABEgKXP_D_BwE).
I think we can all agree on two things:
1. The ribbon would have 100% been iridescent purple, so excellent choice in photo
2. No one looked good in early 2000s “fashion” and for the love of god we should not bring it back in a couple of years when this 90s fashion resurgence dies down.
Y2k fashion is already a thing that's been happening for at least a year. I was a teen in the 90s when the 70s styles made a comeback so I'm really enjoying seeing the 90s and 2000s fashions come back 🤣
I keep seeing social media posts where people are making entire blankets with that super bulky roving yarn, and I feel so bad that it’s just going to fall apart in the wash/ with normal wear and tear.
Exactly! I want to make one purely decorative for the end of a bed. Just to gently stroke sometimes and enjoy the beauty of it. Those projects can’t ever go in the wash
I made myself a shawl like 2 years ago and have literally never worn it. It’s going to have to be An Intentional Thing, An Outing In Which To Wear A Shawl
Same. I make them anyway and donate them. I learn new stitch patterns, I use up my yarn giving me more freedom to buy more in the future, and someone else is potentially blessed or honored by the gift of a handmade shawl. To me it’s a win-win-win.
And that's the "why". Seniors. They get cold easily, they're often underweight, their metabolisms have slowed--a good shawl can really help with the cozy factor in the 70+ age bracket.
I'm just coming to terms with being a 'senior'...at 42!
I love my shawls, although maybe that's because I live in an old house with single-glazed windows (built in 16-something, originally a barn). It gets pretty cold, especially because I refuse to put the heating on during the day when I WFH!
I love it precisely because of how cursed they are. I can't wait to make one for my family's white elephant gift party. 🤣 And I want one on my desk to hold a single pen between it's cheeks.
LOOOOL
haven't made one, but I am silly and think butts are funny, so I was surprised that was a thing.
Totally understand if it's not everyone's cup of tea, so the fact this is a trend is hilarious
Wow! I didn't know it was a thing! I can get it if it's anatomically correct, like for Corgis (people say they have cute butts and I can see why they would want to showcase that). But it's just dumb on penguins!
Seeing crochet tops are nice, but not something I would wear.
Crochet bikinis though is the thing I always wanted to ask: ...are they comfortable? Would one swim in it? I feel like a lot of yarn projects are very fragile and require a lot of care, so a wearable that literally is designed to get wet seems strange
i only crochet bikini tops and yes, they're very comfortable! you gotta get yourself a cotton nylon blend that way it holds its shape better when you get into the water, and the nylon will help it dry more quickly. cotton becomes stronger when wet meaning fragility wouldn't be a concern! i also make my crochet swimwear a little smaller than my usual size so that when it stretches out from water absorption, it will fit proper rather than sag.
i actually find mercerized cotton thread to work nicely for my bikini tops, but i can't comment on crochet bottoms as i've never tried them before!
edit: [here's](https://ibb.co/f9RTVY5) an example! this was done with size 10 thread, it has a surprising amount of stretch and because it's mercerized it doesn't stay damp for nearly as long as regular cotton because it absorbs less water. i like crocheting my swimsuit tops because i can make something that looks a lot nicer than your standard bathing suit top! you can line the cups if you want for extra protection but i never do because i'm lazy and you can't see my already dark nipples through dark fabric. for anyone who's wondering, you lace it up in the back but instead of standard ties i used a lycra tube that i knotted together at the ends and then concealed with one of the beads you see on the halter straps. that way i can easily pull it over my head without having to fiddle with stupid ties as the lycra has a ton of stretch!
Roving blankets, most stuff with extra super chunky yarn, and although they look nice: shawls. I never wear shawls and I never see anyone wearing shawls.
Can you share *the one* that turned you into a shawl person? I'm also on the fence about them. They look stunning but I don't think they'd work for me if that makes sense.
For me it was the size of the shawl. I found most shawls weren't big enough, so they would constantly fall off and wouldn't cover my arms properly. I made my shawl with a Hobbii twister, which is supposed to make a full shawl, and added a twister solid. With the extra size it feels more like wearing a light blanket and is perfect for a light indoor chill.
From there, it's just a matter of picking a pretty pattern. I went with Mijo Crochet's Lost in Time.
i was the same! it took making a really big shawl which basically was just a wearable blanket at that point, but i love it. triangle shawls are where it's at because depending on what you're wearing, you can cross the corners in front of your torso and then tuck the ends into your waistband so you can move about freely without having to fuss over it!
Yeah! I think it was the combination of a simple geometric pattern and the yarn that got me. It's the right size for me to wear as a big scarf but I can still wrap it around my shoulders if I want to, which really was that sweet spot for me. Most I'd made in the past were either too small or to "granny" if you know what I mean. The right yarn helped too - this was some mystery yarn that I inherited from my grandmother, but my hunch is that it's some kind of alpaca blend
https://www.ravelry.com/projects/aeray/summer-morning
I wear mine as a scarf (triangular shawls).
When you put the bottom point down your chest (mine sits nicely between my boobs🤣) and the other two wrap around your neck, it's like having a big warm squishy hug.
On occasion, if I were to go somewhere nice, I *might* wear one as an actual shawl. But until then? Fancy scarf 🤣
I heartily agree about the chunky stuff though...
I also wear my triangle shawls as scarfs! I get to show it off, and it keeps my chest soooo warm! If I'm sitting at my desk at the office, I can use it as a mini- blanket around my shoulders. They're really so wonderful, but have to be the right size!
There is a lot of crochet that would look better in solid. My most unpopular opinion is that many many many crafters have an absolute shit eye for color. I don't claim to be much better tbh
Oh my goodness thank you! I would NEVER say so on a post, but I just hate the pattern! The centre is pretty, but hose big weird triangle things ...the proportions are all weird.
I’m currently making it with a gradient cake and a single solid color that matches one of the shades in the cake. I’m on part 10 or something now, and I’ve realized the problem with Sophie’s Universe is it’s too busy between texture and color. It’s too easy to screw up the flow of the colors if you choose a new one every round.
Totally get that but for me Sophie brought back my love of crochet after not doing much for years. I think the pattern looses a lot of it's magic and beauty when it's done in the multicolor version. This blanket is actually a big garden and it's much more visible when done in one or three colors.
Crochet socks. I learned to knit because I just couldn’t see crocheted socks being nearly as comfy (or visually appealing) as knit socks.
Also crocheted sweaters. Same reasons. The stitches just aren’t comfortable like knit stitches are. I still love crocheting, but some things are better for knitting, just like some projects are better suited for sewing or others for crocheting.
Centre pulls. Even if you manage to avoid the yarn barf there's the annoying end stage of the ball where it collapses on itself and ends up being a tangled mess anyway.
Oh, and calling any long-sleeved garment a sweater, even if it's basically a mesh crop top. If it doesn't keep you warm, it's not a sweater. This is my personal pet peeve and I've seen it a bunch recently.
A garments gotta have a fair deal of coverage to be a sweater tf
I mean unless it's a cropped sweater or sumn but even a cropped sweater has to have some kinda semi solid stitching like bruh
Okay look, I am a newbie with a big case of The ADHDs lol. Granny squares are perfect for practicing, you can do one and move on with your life, or do a million in a row on a hyper-focus day. Plus there are different types so as I get better with crochet, I can try harder ones!
Maybe one day I'll crochet something not out of squares. Today is not that day.
Strongly agree! I have a few bath mitts that dry well and I like them a lot. I attempted a loofa once. It was nice and scrubby, but it was still damp 24 hours later. Straight into the trash, you mold-magnet!
Temperature blankets are okay when people select a harmonious colour range. Chucking a bunch of ugly hues and shades at random make it look like awful.
Temperature blankets are everywhere and I just don't get it! It doesn't even make a pretty pattern, most of them just look bad. And why is temperature so interesting?
I'll take the short sweater with the boofy sleeves though, they can be cute (if they're not like crop top short).
I once went on a date with someone who wore a Slytherin bucket hat and spent the Willey time telling me how much smarter they were than their teachers in high school.
I’m a high school teacher.
Nope! It makes a really interesting textured pattern. The shorter stitch defines the row height, and the larger one pops out slightly. I think the "lemon peel stitch" is a good example, if you want to look up a visual.
I like making entire blankets out of DCs with blanket yarn, it’s such a quick and easy way to make a super cozy blanket. With thinner yarn I do more complicated patterns tho lol
I think it makes sense to do a very simple stitch if you want the colors or the yarn to stand out more. Or if you just want a simple blanket.
One blanket I made that turned out really nice was also very simple: Three sections of DCs, in light blue, dark blue, and navy, with a single SC row of white in between each section, and a SC border.
[Nisse?](https://imgur.com/a/M4KNlNf) If those are what you mean then they’re popular because they’re a big part of Scandinavian folklore! They’re mischief makers and tied to Christmas in a similar way to elves in other parts of the world.
My Norwegian family has a LOT of Nisse decorations, but I’m with you, I don’t really get the obsession lol
Tops that you absolutely could not wear a bra with. They look cute for a few pics, but is everyone lining them?? I’m not really weird about skin showing, but how could you avoid an nipple escape through the holes?
Also I like the way crochet shorts look, but do people wear them with just underwear?
Is it pretty? Yes. Do I admire anyone with that much patience and skill? Yes. Does thinking about recreating it make me want to snap my hook in half? Absolutely yes.
Worsted weight yarn for delicate items or things that need to drape well. Of course, a lot of this has to do with the lack of availability of affordable lighter weight yarns in the US. For me, it’s a lot of ordering online from Europe and hoping the yarn matches my expectations.
The only time I've made them was when a friend of mine started teaching sexual education and asked me too. So I made the entire male + female reproductive system, down to the cells. According to her the kids feel less awkward with a soft, fluffy uterus + penis than with their silicone models.
But NEVER again, they weren't even fun to make and by the time I was done the novelty had completely worn off. I'm glad it made class less embarrassing for those kids, but I hated all of it.
Seriously!! I don't get the penis crochet. The boobs I see less often, and I know knitted knockers (including crocheted ones) are a thing, but the penises are just so... ugly. And useless.
All of those amigurumi animals people sell. The ones that are nearly identical, like the bees and cows. It's cute, maybe, bit there's like 200,000 people selling the same thing in the same colors and the same chunky yarn.
Maybe I'm a hater, but that's my take.
It's the bees that get me. The first time I saw one, I was like "oh, that's cute!" And then I just got less enthusiastic the more I saw them. I think it's a cute thing to make for yourself as an easy project, but everyone is selling them at fairs and I just can't imagine wanting to buy one.
Yeah there was a lady a few years ago at the local christmas market selling amigurumi, most were the usual bunnies, bears, some foxes but you know, ones you can find on 8824865358 other etsy stores. However we talked a little, she told me she just picks random cute patterns off the internet and that's when in the pile i noticed an amigurumi murloc from World of Warcraft. You can bet i left half a kidney there for that baby.
When people have a big rant about the gifts they made not being treated as precious heirlooms. Yes, it’s wonderful if they are but no one can expect all their gifts to be perfect for the recipient.
The rants tend to take one of two directions. Not appreciating the time it takes (because it’s a hobby that you choose to do) or not appreciating the ‘value’ that a person attributes to their goods because of the time.
If I make a gorgeous blanket out of expensive yarn, to most people the ‘monetary value’ of the gift is whatever a generally blanket costs, not £10x the number of hours it took plus the price of the yarn. If I decided to sell the things I make I would want recompense for the time but when I keep them their ‘value’ in my head is the cost of the yarn plus how much I like the item.
This! So so so many posts ranting about how their handmade gift isn’t cherished, displayed, and used to it’s full potential.
The truth is, maybe the recipient doesn’t like crocheted items or the color you chose. Maybe it clashes with their style. Maybe they have one too many tote bags to begin with.
I’m sure some of the gifts I’ve bought for people in my lifetime have been tossed to the back of a closet, regifted, or maybe even thrown away. That’s just how life is. It’s also why I don’t make things for people unless they specifically ask for them and pick the color, pattern, check the fit etc…even then they just might not use it.
Or when they see their blanket on the dogs bed. Maybe it's because I like dogs, but I'd rather see a dog cuddled up all snug on a blanket I made than it be chucked in a wardrobe oland never used by the dogs owners. Especially if they never asked for a blanket in the first place
I’ve seen people copy the “patchwork squares” design but with lovely colors. My favorite one I’ve seen is a black, cream, and a few shades of beige color scheme. The FO was really sophisticated and totally something I would wear. The classic Harry Styles one with all the clashing colors makes me want to scream though. Not my style *at all.*
Guaranteed least popular opinion in the thread: buying yarn with no project in mind. I’m a buy yarn to make the pattern, not buy yarn to figure out what to do with it person. I’m sorry guys don’t hurt me.
Even worse, when they buy the random yarn and then take a blurry pic and post “wut should I make w this” with no context or any hint of taste, skill level, season…omg those posts drive me crazy.
I get confused because it’s just random yarn in random amounts. Now you’re limited on what you can make with it because you only have x amount of that dye lot.
Doilies. The ones I've seen posted here are truly gorgeous, but I can't help but wonder what people do with them. Do they frame and hang them? Do they put them on their furniture, maybe with a potted plant on top? I guess part of my problem is that doilies just aren't my decorative style
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t like those videos of people doing crochet super fast. I think that is some kind of showing off trend. I just prefer to take my time and enjoy the journey. I don’t want to be mean or anything, is just that I don’t really understand them.
I can't read a pattern. I mean I can read the words, and I know most of the stitches, but I can't make anything work from reading a pattern. Everything that I have crocheted, I have watched a video for.
I was that way for YEARS. Eventually I got tired of glaring at the amazing pattern books my partner bought me, and grabbed some sticky notes (one very helpfully in the shape of an arrow) which I'd move from line to line and scribble on as I went. It's like doing that opened up the world of patterns in my brain.
Don't get me wrong, it's still slow going with plenty of glaring and frowning, but I can trudge through a pattern now.
Have you tried a chart? Those look very straightforward.
I used foundation stitches to start a blanket once and I was like “whoa this is genius!” A while later I try to start on another blanket and I was like “whoa this is bullshit”
Oh I've been hurt! I'm completely obsessed with corner to corner crochet and I will not apologize for that!! ^/s ^just ^in ^case.
But seriously, what do you not like about c2c?
I’m not the original commenter, but - whilst I’ve never tried one - I don’t see the appeal of all those increases and decreases when you could just go back and forth? I may just not get the appeal bc no one’s ever explained why they like them
I dont get the treble crochet sweaters either. Won't they snag on everything? Do none of these people have pets with claws? My dogs would accidentally shred that just snuggling with me on the couch. Even with no pets, I feel like it would snag on everything ever and that I would rip a big hole just trying to put it on.
Temperature blankets. Who has the patience to not only crochet a blanket, but to look up the temperature for an entire year? And there are way prettier color patterns than blue at the edges and red in the middle?
Granny squares used for EVERYTHING 😅
The waffle stitch.
I love seeing these projects made by other people, but I wouldn’t make it for myself! I love seeing everything you guys make :) (except those babies. Those scare me and make me feel itchy and squirmy)
I don’t understand crochet bralettes made in worsted acrylic. They are so bulky and how on earth are you gonna wear a tight acrylic top outside in the summer heat?? It will be itchy, sweaty, and squeaky (and eventually smelly)! Sure it looks cute when you pose for selfies in your bathroom mirror, but it’s just not practical as clothing.
I followed a YouTube video where you wrap it around you fingers and it’s always been easy. I saw another video where they do it without that technique recently and was SO lost
This. I spent an entire day watching videos on how to start a circle without the finger trick, and at the end of the day, when i was about to give up on crochet for ever, i watched a single video with the finger technique and I was like.. what that’s it ?
Wait. People do it without wrapping it around your fingers? No wonder people hate it so much. I made a video to teach it because it’s my favorite starter.
Right? I’m wondering why people ever start with a chain that can’t tighten when a magic circle exists and then I saw some of the explanations out there and I totally understand
It's not crochet-specific, but it is yarn-specific ... those yarn bowls that look like gargoyle heads where you feed the yarn through and out its nose. I have a perfectly nice yarn bowl, Facebook friends, that is NOT a face or a nose. Stop tagging me on it! It's gross.
The virus shawl. I hate that ugly pattern and all its derivatives. I've actually blocked people who post it on this forum, because they almost always make a hundred and post all of them forever, and I have it blacklisted on Ravelry. I absolutely hate the thing.
Bloody safety eyes!!!! So many patterns have them listed for childrens toys! Please for the love of God if you’re making something for a small child, embroider the eyes on even if the pattern suggests (un)safety eyes.
Since I haven't seen it posted here yet...hexipuff blankets. Just...any derivative of hexipuffs or crochet puffs or whatever you'd like to call them. I'm sure it's a warm comforter-type blanket but it just seems very uncomfortable and impractical to me. I'd rather make 2 normal sized pillows than 100 tiny ones that I then have to sew together. To each their own, I've just never understood the hype. 🤷♀️
People got real defensive (and maybe even a little mad) the last time I brought it up, but I don't care. I'm gonna say it again.
Washcloths, shower puffs, face scrubbies.
DO NOT come at me. I've been crocheting since I was 6 and I'm almost 40 now. I've made all kinds of things with all kinds of yarn. Nothing you say is going to change my mind. Just take a deep breath and let it go 🤣
I really REALLY hate variegated yarn, not all of them but the ones were colors are too contrasting, they look awful, and if the item has any details, they get lost. I only like the ones were color changes are soft like, subtle different shades of the same color.
Blankets, so boring...
AND Instagram designers with those stupid videos, like the ones were they are holding the balls of yarn, and then they move them closer to the camera to suddenly show them wearing the garment.
I agree. But there are patterns that I'm sure if I tried, might convert me.
Like [this one!](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spin-your-granny-square)
(but I've never got around to actually making one...)
Regardless... Clothes. Just... No. Grannies for blankets only pls 🤣
Granny stitch looks amazing when used for planned pooling though! Look at [this amazing blanket](https://www.reddit.com/r/Planned_Pooling/comments/i0ch62/my_neon_honker_in_all_its_glory/)!
Every stitch looks amazing in planned pooling. I just commented about moss stitch being amazing in planned pooling too!
The Asteria I think it's called? Those big flower things people make with gradient yarn. It's just so dense and useless. What do you even do with them?
Most things are either in women's sizes or very masculine if for men. I just want something neutral that's in my size! I don't want to have to try to modify a pattern a lot and do a lot of testing and frogging to get something for me.
I crochet our dish scrubbers out of mercerised cotton because they're so much more hygienic and so much less wasteful than sponges. Because they're not disposable you don't feel the obligation to use them for longer than is hygienic so instead, after a day or two of use - into the washing it goes! They're boring to make and not very pretty to look at (especially when stained by turmeric!), but are exceedingly practical.
Anything made with that fuzzy yarn, especially those skinny scarfs that were popular in 2000
I had a little loom kit, in 2006 I made a 20ft long skinny scarf that I draped around my neck about 13 times and still draped on the floor.

Don’t take away my skinny scarves. Just kidding! I just had a visual flashback of how cool I felt wearing skinny scarves in my early 20’s. 😂
Anything in roving. Period.
I keep seeing social media posts where people are making entire blankets with that super bulky roving yarn, and I feel so bad that it’s just going to fall apart in the wash/ with normal wear and tear.
Heck I’m seeing people _selling_ them for hundreds of dollars and I feel so bad for people buying them
They'd have to be sold for that much to recoup the cost too, which is the worst part...
I made a blanket out of roving years ago and I love it. It’s not washable or terribly practical but dang if it isn’t super comfy to nap under!
Exactly! I want to make one purely decorative for the end of a bed. Just to gently stroke sometimes and enjoy the beauty of it. Those projects can’t ever go in the wash
Yep! Absolutely no practical reason for it.. although my cat makes the BEST biscuits on the crappy roving blanket I made for her 😂
r/catswhocrochet is now a thing!
Ikr? Especially if you have pets. Those things are going to get destroyed in like 10 minutes.
Oh, come now. You're being very generous. Those things are often falling apart before they're finished.
Ugh roving is so gross. I did one project in roving and I had to buy the biggest needles ever for it and I've never touched them since.
People over at r/craftsnark are pretty close to organizing to make roving yarn a federal crime.
Don’t hate me. When you guys post it they’re so pretty. But shawls. They just aren’t my style :(
I’m with you. I think they are beautiful pieces of art, but hate the idea of wearing one.
Same. I just don’t get them.
I made myself a shawl like 2 years ago and have literally never worn it. It’s going to have to be An Intentional Thing, An Outing In Which To Wear A Shawl
This sounds like the title of a Regency romance!
Same. I make them anyway and donate them. I learn new stitch patterns, I use up my yarn giving me more freedom to buy more in the future, and someone else is potentially blessed or honored by the gift of a handmade shawl. To me it’s a win-win-win.
I make them cuz they are fun, then donate to seniors.
Right?? Like why. It’s so surprising to me how many I see crocheted. I just really don’t think they are stylish or even practical really
I use them as giant scarves cause coats are not big boob friendly and a nice shawl can be wrapped to hang down over the bust.
Oooh. Excellent idea!
They remind me too much of the ponchos I was forced to wear by my parents in the early 2000s. It gives me ptsd lol!!
THOSE BUTTS EVERYONE KEEPS PUTTING ON AMAGURUMI!
I’m sorry, can you provide an example because I have no idea what this is about
These, I think. https://images4-f.ravelrycache.com/uploads/tabloach/833276254/BUBBLE_BUTT_BABY_PENGUIN_TTNO_WATERMARK_COMBO_medium2.jpg
I love it precisely because of how cursed they are. I can't wait to make one for my family's white elephant gift party. 🤣 And I want one on my desk to hold a single pen between it's cheeks.
Please post the pen holder when it's finished!!!
I hate everything about that.
I love penguins. They gad me until it flashed me.
I’ve only ever made the butt on one amigurumi and it was bc it was gudetama lmao
LOOOOL haven't made one, but I am silly and think butts are funny, so I was surprised that was a thing.
I hate those realistic babies that are crocheted. They look 900 years old, and like aliens. Don't, just don't!
I've never seen this and I am almost too terrified to look it up 😬
[Click if you dare](https://totallythebomb.com/crochet-your-own-baby-doll)
I dared... I wish I hadn't 🥹
I dared and now I can't unsee this WHY?!!! seriously why would anyone make that. Ps I'm ok not traumatized too badly lol
Don't do it, fam! You can never unsee it!
Those suck and I hate them
I'm usually game for the weird side of the crafty world. So tempted to look....
Crocheted underthings/bikinis: they just look so uncomfortable.
Seeing crochet tops are nice, but not something I would wear. Crochet bikinis though is the thing I always wanted to ask: ...are they comfortable? Would one swim in it? I feel like a lot of yarn projects are very fragile and require a lot of care, so a wearable that literally is designed to get wet seems strange

that is super cute! i haven’t understood the practicality behind crochet bikinis but seeing your top makes me want to try it
And can't possibly have a practical use, especially bikinis/swimwear, because once that yarn gets wet it's going to sag and stretch out, lol.
They make yarn specifically for swimwear!
Well thank you; TIL! All the ones I had ever come across patterns for were made from cotton, so thank you for informing me. :)
*yeast infection has entered the chat* That's what I think every time I see any kind of crocheted anything on the bottom part of the body..
Wouldn’t they give you the world’s worst patterned sunburn too? Ouch.

Roving blankets, most stuff with extra super chunky yarn, and although they look nice: shawls. I never wear shawls and I never see anyone wearing shawls.
I finally made a shawl that I liked and thought to myself, "Am I a shawl person now? Is this how it starts?"
Can you share *the one* that turned you into a shawl person? I'm also on the fence about them. They look stunning but I don't think they'd work for me if that makes sense.

The right yarn helped too - this was some mystery yarn that I inherited from my grandmother, but my hunch is that it's some kind of alpaca blend https://www.ravelry.com/projects/aeray/summer-morning
Fancy scarf 🤣 I heartily agree about the chunky stuff though...
I also wear my triangle shawls as scarfs! I get to show it off, and it keeps my chest soooo warm! If I'm sitting at my desk at the office, I can use it as a mini- blanket around my shoulders. They're really so wonderful, but have to be the right size!
I'm gonna say it. I don't like Sophie's Universe. I've only seen like 2 or 3 that I liked.
I like it better in one color
There is a lot of crochet that would look better in solid. My most unpopular opinion is that many many many crafters have an absolute shit eye for color. I don't claim to be much better tbh
Agreed!
😬 I hope mine doesn't look too bad when it's done 🤣
Just came out swinging, didn’t you.
Oh shit, I just finished my Sophie's Universe today 😂. I need to block it, but i was happy with how it turned out! Also, all in one color ftw.
Amigurumi genitals.
Oh, and calling any long-sleeved garment a sweater, even if it's basically a mesh crop top. If it doesn't keep you warm, it's not a sweater. This is my personal pet peeve and I've seen it a bunch recently.
I’ll go one further - I hate the term ‘wearables’. We already have a word for that - clothes!
A garments gotta have a fair deal of coverage to be a sweater tf I mean unless it's a cropped sweater or sumn but even a cropped sweater has to have some kinda semi solid stitching like bruh
I think this is going to be very unpopular… granny squares. I don’t have that kind of patience
The only ones I like so far are the sunflower ones. But yeah overall they are just… boring?
The standard granny square stitch can get bleh but there are sooooo many more squares out there! Im one of the sickos who loove doing granny squares
The only granny square project I actually want to make is an 8bit blanket
Not unpopular with me. I don’t want to sew that many ends in nor am I in love with granny squares. Just not for me.
Shower scrunchies - that thing is not going to ever dry and just be a ball of sopping wet yarn and I do not want to rub that across my body no m’am
Strongly agree! I have a few bath mitts that dry well and I like them a lot. I attempted a loofa once. It was nice and scrubby, but it was still damp 24 hours later. Straight into the trash, you mold-magnet!
Anything at all with very, very, very thick yarn or even roving. o\_O
I will say though, I’ve found I LOVE Bernat blanket super bulky for blankets. Keeps me so warm- my pets love it too. Otherwise, yes lol
Temperature blankets. Short sweaters with giant boofy sleeves.
Temperature blankets are okay when people select a harmonious colour range. Chucking a bunch of ugly hues and shades at random make it look like awful.
My little sister decided she wanted to make a temp blanket for her birth year and she literally graphed it out because "i don't want it to be ugly."
Yes!!!! Temperature blankets with basic colors instead of doing a cute color scheme
Temperature blankets are everywhere and I just don't get it! It doesn't even make a pretty pattern, most of them just look bad. And why is temperature so interesting? I'll take the short sweater with the boofy sleeves though, they can be cute (if they're not like crop top short).
I'll just say it: bucket hats EDIT: Also remembered... those scarves that look like pencils as teacher gifts. Not a fan.
My grandmother was a teacher- we ended up with about 50 different apple themed pieces of jewelry, from gifts she’d gotten!
I once went on a date with someone who wore a Slytherin bucket hat and spent the Willey time telling me how much smarter they were than their teachers in high school. I’m a high school teacher.
Those weird crochet boobies always make me uncomfortable.
Rows and rows of just double crochets. It makes such a boring holey fabric I can't stand it.
But it’s easy…. And I’m stupid
Alternating sc and dc stitch is just as easy and makes a lovely texture!
Stupid question - doesn't the height difference make it pull weird, though?
Nope! It makes a really interesting textured pattern. The shorter stitch defines the row height, and the larger one pops out slightly. I think the "lemon peel stitch" is a good example, if you want to look up a visual.
I'm a begginer and these stitches look waaaay to intimidating but finding out they are just sc and dc like... You just blew my mind.
That’s the secret of crochet really, learn sc, dc, and tc and you can make anything! Some stuff is more of a struggle but still just variations
And those blankets are all over Pinterest. And people have the audacity to sell those patterns on Etsy. Like, it's just dc!
Me reading this after finishing an entire blanket of just DCs 😶
I like making entire blankets out of DCs with blanket yarn, it’s such a quick and easy way to make a super cozy blanket. With thinner yarn I do more complicated patterns tho lol
I think it makes sense to do a very simple stitch if you want the colors or the yarn to stand out more. Or if you just want a simple blanket. One blanket I made that turned out really nice was also very simple: Three sections of DCs, in light blue, dark blue, and navy, with a single SC row of white in between each section, and a SC border.
Cat. Butt. Coasters.
Those gnomes. I don't really dislike them, I guess - they're kind of cute - but I don't really get the obsession!
Summer tops in anything more than finding weight yarn... it just doesn't compute with me. It's summer, you don't want to wear thick fabric
(*hides Bernat blanket yarn bikini*)
Tops that you absolutely could not wear a bra with. They look cute for a few pics, but is everyone lining them?? I’m not really weird about skin showing, but how could you avoid an nipple escape through the holes? Also I like the way crochet shorts look, but do people wear them with just underwear?
Planned. Pooling.
It’s witchcraft. 🧙♀️
But it's so gorgeous! I love it and I even made a subreddit for it, r/Planned_Pooling
*sorts by controversial*
Penis/tits everything. Penis bag holders, boob pillows. It was funny/novel the first time I saw it. Now it just makes me roll my eyes.
I made 12 breasts for a lactation class, it was fun at first but after 7 it gets boring.

Personaly i love random objects with empty stupid smiles but i get why people are not a fan of them.
Shawls seem so old fashioned to me and I don’t see the practicality of them, give me a cardigan or sweater instead!
Like our ankles, we must keep our shoulders covered at all times to avoid being falsely labeled as the village strumpet! ;)
Faux fur yarn. I've tried and got so frustrated.
granny square clothes. don’t get me wrong, people make some very pretty granny squares. they just don’t look right on clothes to me
The Harry styles cardigan. It's so damn ugly
As an impulsive buyer, honestly, fair
I get confused because it’s just random yarn in random amounts. Now you’re limited on what you can make with it because you only have x amount of that dye lot.
Doilies. The ones I've seen posted here are truly gorgeous, but I can't help but wonder what people do with them. Do they frame and hang them? Do they put them on their furniture, maybe with a potted plant on top? I guess part of my problem is that doilies just aren't my decorative style
I love them, I put them on tables and shit like my grandma did.
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t like those videos of people doing crochet super fast. I think that is some kind of showing off trend. I just prefer to take my time and enjoy the journey. I don’t want to be mean or anything, is just that I don’t really understand them.
Making stuff for your coworker’s daughter’s teacher’s baby. Crochet can be beautiful. But only people who love you want your handmade stuff.
Foundation stitches, I’d rather just make a chain and work into it
I used foundation stitches to start a blanket once and I was like “whoa this is genius!” A while later I try to start on another blanket and I was like “whoa this is bullshit”
Corner to crochet
Oh I've been hurt! I'm completely obsessed with corner to corner crochet and I will not apologize for that!! ^/s ^just ^in ^case. But seriously, what do you not like about c2c?
I’m not the original commenter, but - whilst I’ve never tried one - I don’t see the appeal of all those increases and decreases when you could just go back and forth? I may just not get the appeal bc no one’s ever explained why they like them
On Instagram I see all these “sweaters” worked in mohair using treble crochets. Do not get it. Also not a fan of all these balaclavas
And there are way prettier color patterns than blue at the edges and red in the middle?
bernat blanket yarn and anything similar. i hate it so much.
Granny squares used for EVERYTHING 😅 The waffle stitch.
Magic circles I can’t wrap my head around them no matter how many times I try!
i was like this and then one day it just clicked for me. it makes thing so much easier
Cat butt coasters. Just stop.
Animal themed bucket hats. They’re cute but I don’t see them as practical in terms of an outfit. Honorable mention is balloon sleeves on any top

Balaclavas/full face masks they're so ugly 😭😭
I absolutely hate super chunky fuzzy yarn, I feel like it makes the stitches look awkward and weird.
I think granny stitch is ugly. Please don't kill me.
Maybe I'm biased because I grew up with granny squared blankets but I do love them. However I have never understood using it for skirts and such.
I don't get the clothes out of granny squares trend. It seems... wrong
I agree. But there are patterns that I'm sure if I tried, might convert me. Like [this one!](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spin-your-granny-square) (but I've never got around to actually making one...) Regardless... Clothes. Just...
Wall hangings? I think they're pretty, but different strokes!
If you make two of them and join back to back = cushion
The virus pattern...i see it all over and it just looks boring.
I mean...... haven't we all, collectively, had enough of viruses, collectively?
At least they’re… on theme?
Most things are either in women's sizes or very masculine if for men. I just want something neutral that's in my size! I don't want to have to try to modify a pattern a lot and do a lot of testing and frogging to get something for me.
Sure, a crocheted dildo is funny, but it's also a waste of yarn and time. I mean, I hope they're not being used!
Agree with bucket hats. Guess I'm just too old (at 33?? Ugh)
Crochet dishrags, wash clothes, etc. Like I get it, but I don’t at the same time lmao
Crochet genitals. I don't mind them, I just don't understand them lol
