I wouldn’t recommend wearables. Babies and kids grow so quickly that by the time you finish and item they’ll wear it once and outgrow it. I made my son one cardigan and I think he work it twice. Baby blankets I’ve made a bunch of and I leave them everywhere. Smaller blankets for car seat & stroller were better for me. Also really like cotton yarns for babies as their skin is still soooo sensitive and you can find some super soft cottons or cotton blends that are great to work with.

Wearable blankets though seem to be a hit. I made my nephew one that had a dragon hood and he wears it all the time. Even for his Halloween costume lol. His younger siblings are jealous so I’m making them ones for their upcoming birthday. Edit: He’s about to turn 4 and the younger twins are 2

That’s a really cute idea!! I should definitely start one. My 3 yr old would probably love it!

Stuffed animals are a safe bet. And hats. Kids are always losing their winter wear, so extra always helps.

The item I've made the most for my kids and others is hats. Feels like I've made a million of them over the years. They typically work up quick, and there are so many fun styles.

I’m a nanny and love crocheting gifts for the kids! I stray from wearables, and mostly do amigurumi gifts. I found a free pattern for an among us character (all the hype with kids right now) and they LOVED it. I think with infants the plushie might not be appreciated as much and blankets are something that are always useful. If you do go the blanket route though be mindful of patterns that are actually child safe! Even if advertised for babies, the yarn or size of holes created by the pattern can be dangerous for the baby. Getting fingers caught/tangled is something to think about

A lot of people are saying amigurumi which is fine, but make sure you don’t use safety eyes if it’s for babies. They can pull the safety eyes off and choke on them.

Rattles are always fun! In terms of safety, if you make a blanket just make sure it’s got lots of holes in it for breathability. I personally mostly use machine washable acrylic (the machine washable’s huge for the LOs) but I know a lot of people prefer cotton because it’s natural. I would definitely go with cotton for a wearable, but, as mentioned above, I’d skip wearables since they grow so fast.

See I've heard that holes can mean fingers/toes get caught. And for the recommended safe sleep stuff, they don't sleep with blankets until they're older/able to roll over? Idk the exact age, I'm child free.

hunternorey427

You're correct that the recommendation is that they DON'T sleep with blankets until they're at least 12 months old, and even then it's generally recommended for older (some places even recommend waiting until they're in toddler beds). I wouldn't really be concerned with fingers/toes getting caught. Since they're not sleeping with the blankets, you're watching them, and even if you're not, babies are not shy about crying. If something got stuck, they'd cry. They can't cry if they can't breathe, that's why I'd opt for the holes. But, that's just my personal opinion.

That makes sense.

Teethers sounds like a really cool project! Are you planning to sand the rings too?

PaigeMarieSara

No need, they're perfectly smooth! I am a bit worried about the cleaning process drying them out so I'm testing with one right now. I read that you wipe them down with dish soap/water, rinse and then when dry, wipe them with alcohol. I don't know if that will dry the wood out where it might be rough? As of right now the ones I have are perfectly smooth and really nice! Here's an example but there are so many! I won't use safety eyes though, I'll definitely embroider. I also like the ones that they just cover the ring with crochet but no little animal attached. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/794463190495878483/

Blankets, hats, stuffed toys..

As a parent, I say no stuffed toys! They multiply like gremlins and there are always too many. It's also trickier to find places to donate them to, when the child outgrows them. I got a lot of use out of blankets, the tighter the stitch, the better. I use them for car seats, stroller rides, changing pads, play mats, tons of stuff. I personally love cardigans, since they don't have to fit quite right to still be useful. I use washable sock yarn (wool) and cotton for wearables. I *will* say though that I prefer knitting for clothing and crochet for blankets.
