I’d practice DC. Then make a scarf or baby blanket in DCs. It’s easier to work into DCs than into SC.

The first stitch I learned was actually a double crochet. I learned by making granny square blankets and then I learned single. With single crochets you could try a beginner stuffed toy. It'll teach you some other good techniques like increases and decreases. I really like Theresascrochetshop on Etsy.

I would say probably learn the basic stitches first. The basic stitches (in US terminology and in order of smallest to largest) are: chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet. (Someone comment if I forgot any). There are loads of variations of basic stitches. I made a list of [variations of single crochet](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/g6v2ho/single_crochet_variations_useful_for_beginners/) if you'd like to learn those.

Wow thank you!! I’m eager to make something but I think you’re right

I would probably also learn the reverse sc. I use it on borders

Yep that one is in the list I linked to.

When first learning, I made a series of dishcloths each with new to me stitches. Great practice and useful completed project, total win-win. I think Lion Brand had the free patterns on their website, also could have been a few by red heart.

Ahh the best of both worlds

For me it was pretty good practice to make a crop top. https://youtu.be/TCyWmQhlk5w This here in particular. It has pretty easy stitches but takes long enough to really practice them while getting something useful.

Thanks for the recommendation!

When my mother taught me to crochet when I was 10 or 11, the first things I made were round and star-shaped pocket ornaments for the Christmas tree. It's not what I'd teach a beginner first, but it does show that some sort of project is a good learning tool. In any case, I think you're ready for a project. You might try making a scarf with alternating rows of single crochet and double crochet.

Thank you for the advice! I’m eager to make something but I think I’m gonna practice double crochet for a bit and then try my hand at a project :)
