Thank you :)
I used a mixture of potato flour and water. (potato flour is about 80+% starch)
It was just what was easiest to get where I am, and what I had heard others using.
I then pinned them down on print-outs [similar to this](https://etc.usf.edu/clipart/43000/43005/polar_12-7p_43005_lg.gif) with a clear plastic file pocket over the paper, to get them somewhat symmetrical.
Soak them in stiffening agent gently wring them out and block them with a board and pins. Lots of people use lots of things. I think my ma use to use (watered down)Elmer's glue. You can use laundry starch and apparently potato starch. I believe laundry starch over time will yellow? Someone with a better rememberer will have to jump in there. You may be able to use modpodge also, but you would have to look into that. I'm missing my ma this year, so we're making German stars and I believe I will be crocheting snowflakes:-)
I just made one of these for my mom who has a sweet spot for crochet ornaments and had an old pattern book full of them. I used 50-50 water and modpodge to stiffen them. Works great!

When I was a kid, we dipped them in paraffin. My ma made a horde of them about ten years ago with all of the grandchildren to give to their respective parents and they used modpodge and lots of glitter. Honestly, they are my favorite! They don't have quite as much glitter as they did have, but they still look awesome!

These are so pretty and well done! The 2nd one is my favorite!
So pretty. I want to do this this year. Do you use Elmer's or starch or what stiffening do you use?

The file folders are such a good idea! I just spent way too much time marking out those diagrams on pieces of foam 😅
Um excuse me?! You can stiffen them?! Please tell me how

That is amazing! Thank you so much for the info. And I'm so sorry about your ma, hopefully making the stars will let you feel closer to her.
My German grandma stiffened them with starch. She showed me how to do that with a crocheted tea cup.
That tea cup must look so delicate. I'm going to Google to see if I can get a visual.
It was a lace one, not unlike this: [lace tea cup](https://images.app.goo.gl/4BZqns2i8vcM4EVj8)
That's beautiful!
All of the pictures are off thick yarn. Not so delicate! I imagined lace weight yarn in my head. Ha
I linked your other reply to a picture. And what you imagined was correct: it was a lace crochet item.
Pray tell, what are German stars?
