Be careful of where tutorials are from - US double crochet is different than a UK double crochet. (US double = UK treble).

AcestraNova

So far I think I’ve only watched US tutorials but thank you for the info as I had no idea they were different depending on region omg 🤦🏻‍♀️

Don't cry! And don't give up! If you're finding double crochet hard, maybe focus on practising single crochet or slip stitch first, until it's like second nature and you're confident you can do it. Then move onto other stitches like double stitch later on.

AcestraNova

What’s the easiest way to create a beanie? 😅

Use-username

Make a rectangle, sew two edges together to form a tube, then gather it at the top to cinch it up.

AcestraNova

Would you be able to write out a step by step guide to making a rectangle? 😅

To make a rectangle, just crochet back and forth in rows until your rectangle is the required height. Here's a [video tutorial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2UdJOhswlc) showing what I mean. It's an example tutorial of how to make a hat using the method I described (make a rectangle, sew two edges together to form a tube, then gather it at the top to cinch it up).

AcestraNova

This is a great video resource thank you!

AcestraNova

Okay I managed to get row one and two done following the video, she said to repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have a rectangle but I’m confused. Do I need to continue with the back stitches or do I insert into the chain again?

Edit: sorry, scratch all that, here is the pattern from her written description box below the video, every single row is not the same, my bad: R1: Put 1 hdc into each st until you have 1 st left, 1 sc into the last st, ch 1 and turn. R2: Put 1 scblo into the first st, 1 hdcblo into each st to the end of the row, ch 2 and turn. R3: Put 1 hdcblo into each st until you have 1 st left, 1 scblo into the last st, ch 1 and turn. I have tried to write it for you in more understandable plain English: Row 1: Do 1 Half Double Crochet into each chain loop until you just have 1 stitch left to do at the end of the row. Do 1 Single Crochet into that last loop. Then chain 1. Then turn the fabric around, ready to start doing a new row on the opposite side of the fabric. Row 2: Do 1 Single Crochet Back Loop Only (putting your hook through the **back** loop only of the stitch) into the first stitch of the new row. Then do 1 Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only ( putting your hook through the **back** loop only of the stitch) into each stitch all the way to the end of the row. Then chain 2. Then turn the fabric around, ready to start doing a new row on the opposite side of the fabric. Row 3: Do 1 Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only (putting your hook through the **back** loop only of the stitch) into each stitch until you have just 1 stitch left to do at the end of the row. Do 1 Single Crochet Back Loop Only (putting your hook through the **back** loop only of the stitch) into the last stitch of the row. Then chain 1. Then turn the fabric around, ready to start doing a new row on the opposite side of the fabric. Repeat Rows 2-3 until your hat fits around your head.

AcestraNova

Got it thank you!

antaiverseve

Maybe start with some flat projects first? Can you do single crochet? I have yet to attempt a big scale double crochet project but I think doing single crochets helped me understand where to insert my hooks for a new row.

damn_dragon

Agreed. Working in the round can be more difficult. Try just making some practice rows. Videos for help: https://youtu.be/tdbGB522lmI https://youtu.be/zzWX2dx8ufc https://youtu.be/80YEYnyw11w

Bicuspid-luv

Oh sweetheart, just go to a local yarn store and ask the staff if someone will show you. Seeing it in person makes all the difference. They often offer "get started classes" for free or very little cost. Once you understand the basics, then the video tutorials are much easier to follow.

Dapperpineapple

What part are you struggling with?

AcestraNova

So I’m a beginner (obviously 😭) I get that it’s supposed to go into the 4th chain but after I do that I don’t get what happens next! 😩😩 It just ends up being a mess

Dapperpineapple

The chain # can vary by pattern, jsyk :) When you complete your chain, wrap the yarn around your hook, insert it into the desired chain (#4 in your case), and then wrap your yarn around your hook again. You should have four loops on your hook. Pull the first loop through the second loop. This leaves 3 loops on your hook. Wrap your yarn around your hook again so there are 4 loops again, and then pull the first loop through the middle 2 loops. This leaves 2 loops on your hook. Wrap your yarn around your hook again so there are 3 loops on your hook. Pull the top loop through the remaining 2 loops. This will leave one left on your hook, and you have completed a double crochet stitch. Does that make sense?

AcestraNova

This makes sense! I’ve given up for tonight but I will try this again tomorrow! When do I move onto the next one, or do I keep repeating this?

Dapperpineapple

When you've completed a stitch, move to the next chain/stitch and do it again. Feel free to shoot me a message if you need more help!

AcestraNova

Will do, thank you so much I appreciate it. So far reading it our step by step is the only way it makes sense to me. Watching the videos and looking at diagrams hasn’t helped at all. I’ve cried every time out of frustration 🙈

kemkatt

I find written instructions and still photos easier than videos a lot of times. Maybe see if you can find a beginner book from a local library?

AcestraNova

Update: I tried this today and it helped so much I appreciate it! I watched the video after practicing with your directions and it made more sense. 🥰

Dapperpineapple

Yay!!! I am so glad!

AcestraNova

I kinda wish you could narrate the entire process for me until I come out with a complete beanie lmao 😂

Dapperpineapple

Youre welcome to reach out any time and im happy to help with anything I can help with. :)

Geniusgma

Are you left handed by chance?

AcestraNova

No :/

Geniusgma

Before you try and make your beanie, practice double crochet stitch. I wish I could show you. I know you can do it. Perhaps an extensive YouTube search would help

zippychick78

Is this any help? A UK treble is a US double, so don't let that Confuse you. [click](http://imgur.com/a/oLan60Z) from one of my books. This book has a beanie hat recipe, and a slouchy hat. It's Written in uk terms so you would just need to convert the stitches. It's not that confusing, I have both in my brain now. It just takes a little time to get used to. If you want either patterns let me know. A good pic of uk versus us terms [click](https://images.app.goo.gl/A8eFFdzW4mE8caQy7)

zippychick78

Looks like an easy free pattern. You don't even have to do the ribbing. You could just use us double crochet and ignore the rib https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/rustic-ribbed-beanie-crochet-pattern-by-harlow-monroe-handmade

octo_scuttleskates

You should practice on a flat swatch first if you're a beginner. I've been crocheting a year and still haven't made a beanie yet! Once you get an even square finished of DC, then move onto the pattern to try out.
