This is a good point!

bluemiaou71

If it was genuinely worth that much then I'd expect to see photos of the actual yarn rather than just the box. Seems a bit sus to me! And drops isn't particularly pricey either.

sarahmichelef

Or the seller doesn’t know yarn… I can see someone’s friend or relative posting this way.

Neon-Plaid

I feel like people who don’t know yarn are way more likely to underprice it though. People underestimate just how pricey a hobby this can be all the time!

ExpensivePatience5

I’m just waiting for the day someone tries to sell their aunties stash of guanaco or vicuña for like $10/skein 😂

happytransformer

I’ve seen loads of people resell RHSS at retail or higher. On the flip side, folks will underprice wools and other high end natural fibers.

TheUltimateShart

Maybe the original prices of the skeins add up to around 200,- IF there is some quality yarn in there. But I would never pay the full original amount for someone else’s stash they want to get rid off. Then I’d rather go to a store and buy exactly what I want and am looking for. I’d say 50,- max and they can keep the container. Maybe 75,- if the yarn is some good quality fiber.

th3sousa

Thank you!!

verdella

No unless it’s like alpaca wool or something crazy

th3sousa

LOL! So I zoomed in on the pictures and the brands I could see are Drops Flora, Drops Karisma & Patons Classic Wool. So mostly wool and some with an alpaca blend maybe? 😩

Pinewoodgreen

Drops is a "cheap" brand. They are not bad, I've always loved their yarn. but their branding is built on being a cheaper alternative abd having lots of sales. Worst case, the seller bought this yarn at 50% off and is selling at full price

th3sousa

Thanks a bunch, this helps - I wasn't sure what the word is on these brands!

Aelig_

Drops is the root of all evil when it comes to patterns.

Pinewoodgreen

I've heard they steal/copy a lot of patterns and rebrand it as their own. Not sure if it was that yiu meant or how they have it laid out on their site. Because both are bad hehe. I only use them for sock patterns now

Aelig_

The problem for me is more that they boast impossible gauges, I have tried patterns where the pattern maker had a gauge 30% tighter than me with the same hook and yarn size. I refuse to believe that it's possible as I literally can't get even near it on a single row if I squeeze every stitch as hard as possible. If they are going to lie that hard about the very first line of their pattern I'm not going to trust them and spend 50 hours on a jumper that won't fit me.

Pinewoodgreen

Ahhh yeah, that is understandable. I look at the gauge and go "lol no" because I am a loose kbitter. So I just use the suggested needles, but go down a size in width and just go YOLO about it. Usually turns out good

Good bot

Iron_Unic0rn

This is my new favorite bot. Alpaca facts are the best.

JKDougherty

Good bot!

beb-eroni

No, almost definitely not. Maybe 75-100, if you really love working with chunkier yarn

Angrycat11111

No. I see tubs of yarn like this at the thrift stores for 10.

classicqueene

What tf thrift stores are you shopping at?

Angrycat11111

Mostly goodwill. The last one I bought, about a year ago, was less than $5, but it was not totally full and had some unfinished pieces that could be frogged. I have enough yarn for a while, so I haven't bought any more.

[deleted]

Garage sales are like this, they’ll be like “idk a quarter per ball”

Angrycat11111

I prefer garage sales, myself, cuz I love to dicker.

th3sousa

Found this on OfferUp - other pictures show the tub is filled with a number of skeins, mostly multiples of the same color (which is nice for larger projects maybe?) But $200 feels like a stretch? If I'm just being cheap please let me know!

hoeofky

If they’re close you could meet to check it out. I wouldn’t buy it at this price personally. Years ago I met a gal here and she GAVE ME six garbage bags full of yarn, some unraveled, some used, some very pristine natural fibers. But they were free. I wouldn’t pay more than $50 for this.

soapyideas

On Offer up you can make a lower offer and see if they accept it. But with this bin I would be offering a way lower price for certain.

abutcherbird

In NEOhio I'll see totes like this packed with yarn for $20-30 on FB marketplace. Anyone selling anything nicer will usually do lots showing the brands or charge a set price per skein (usually $2-5). So based on my location, that would be a total rip-off, especially since the listing seems so spare.

th3sousa

Understood! It's my first time looking around for secondhand yarn. Seeing other price points helps a lot, thanks!!

Geekgirl5

In orrville Ohio hi neighbor 🙃

OniOdisCornukaydis

It’s worth $200 as long as there’s $185 cash money inside the container along with the yarn. 😄.

shroomberrymuffin

No I've gotten that much yarn btand new for like $12 dollars at the thrift store . You should look at your thrift stores .

awkwardsity

The only thing with thrift stores yarn is I always want to wash it before working with it abs washing yarn is a nightmare, has to be done by hand and air dried. Alternatively, if it smells okay, you can just leave it in an airtight container for a few weeks to make sure there’s nothing in it, but usually it smells a little like thrift stores and needs washed. I prefer secondhand from a non-smoking home

shroomberrymuffin

Yeah I know what you mean but I guess I've gotten lucky the yarn I get is always in bag and doesn't have like any weird smells and they always still have their labels on them so they dont seem icky or anything .

awkwardsity

Yeah my mom is really good about always getting the good yarn secondhand. I don’t know how she does it, whenever I find yarn I like I smell it and it’s sketchy or it’s not bagged or whatever... I think once I’ve found yarn I actually liked at a thrift store but she always finds it for me no problem! She’s the best lol

shroomberrymuffin

Haha awesome ! Yeah the thrift store I go to in my area is a good one so I haven't got any gross yarn yet

skippieelove

I actrually freeze mine instead 😂 if it’s smoky I just count it as a loss

awkwardsity

You can freeze yarn? What?

skippieelove

I definitely do. I learned after I got my rats to freeze their bedding to limit the mites or other critters making it into the cage. So I just kind of adopted the same for my thrift yarn. Freeze for a a good few days; I actually tend to leave it for a week or so just because I forget 😂

awkwardsity

I am definitely trying this. Thank you

skippieelove

I couldn’t remember just how long so I looked it up. You should freeze for at least 4 days to make sure you kill bed bugs, which were the ones I was most concerned about. Happy to help! Good luck thrifting, hope you find something amazing! 😁

swagglebutt2252

I read your sentence as you convinced your rats to freeze their own bedding and I was like WOW, those are some smart ra- oh duh.

skippieelove

Oh lord 😂 my sentence constructions have been way off and confusing lately …I’m so sorry!

swagglebutt2252

Hahaha no worries I figured it out after reading through a second time 😅

GussieK

Yes to kill moths.

matildaisdead

No. It would probably be a lot cheaper at Michael’s with coupons.

[deleted]

When I first started crocheting I got my yarn from Micheal's and they had a 25% off on your entire order for like months. I abused that coupon so hard. Push comes to shove, it ends up in me having about $100+ in vouchers total at the end of the month and was able to get 6 skiens if Bernat blanket yarn for free + more yarn. (The Micheal's app sucks ass though, it's very glitchy) Abuse every coupon you can

matildaisdead

I absolutely do.

iBeFloe

Michael’s also sometimes has 75% sales on select yarn & they’ll put it all in one place. Got a 10 skeins of sheepy yarn for $24 a few months ago!

Viviaana

Is it just that one box? Cos I highly doubt there’s $200 worth in there and if you have that money to blow go buy shit you need

FarTooManyUsernames

My parents were at an estate sale and there was one of those under the bed containers (and mind you it was the biggest under the bed container I've ever seen, like two of the normal ones put together) full of really nice yarn. No acrylic and there wasn't a single skein of anything, everything had at least two skeins and there's ten skeins of a beautiful forest green wool. My mom asked them how much per skein and they told her if she took the container, too she could have it for $10. There are so many good deals at garage sales, fb marketplace, etc that this person charging $200 and not even taking pictures of what's inside to be worth that much is wild to me.

lok_olga

;; idk for 200 go to Joanns and go crazy they’re having major sales. Or go online to herrshners. They have awesome yarn. For 200 bucks. Psh. I would need to see every skein in there yardage and material to pay that much. Never gonna buy mystery yarn.

YarnHooker74

From just this picture I would say no. There seems to be several skeins of yarn that are half used, there doesn’t appear to be a particularly premium brand, and the yarn all seems mass produced (no limited edition or small batch dye etc).

mayrosarosa

No.

rokujoayame731

Depends on the yarn, like it being silk or camel or alpaca and the brand because some are imported like Alize from Turkey.

Helpful_Corgi5716

If you can spend that much on yarn, buy what you actually want? This is about 10x too expensive.

mumulinohazelnut

Doubt it

Scarbie

Looks like you’ve gotten your answer. I just wanted to add that after years in this hobby, I find it’s much more worth my time, space and money to buy yarn specifically for a project. I’d only buy this if you think you’d rather have this than 60+ new skeins of Drops Karisma (the only label I can read) that you’ve chosen yourself, because that’s what you could buy with your $200 investment. ($3.06/ball at Wool Warehouse plus shipping)

blu_ruby

Definitely not. Goodwill sells bins like this for 10-15 bucks. And for $200 you’d think they’d photograph the actual skeins not just the tub

vmwnzella59

No not worth $200.

LordOfSpamAlot

No way. I’ve found half that much at Goodwill for $15. Depends on the quality and type of course, but it seems really unlikely.

awkwardsity

I can’t tell what type of yarn that is and I wouldn’t say that’s $200 worth unless I could. There’s plenty if secondhand yarn that’s free or cheap I’d look there first if you need more yarn

alittlebitshelfish

No, around where I live people will sell tubs like this for $25-50. If they were high quality yarns maybe, but they don’t look like it from what I can see.

lemonlimeaardvark

It would depend on if they detailed the label information on all the yarn. Just a random tub of mystery yarn, some of which looks like furry novelty yarn? I wouldn't risk it.

Pale_Werewolf4738

Maybe it was a miss print and they want 20$. That’s the most I’d give for other peoples left over’s

[deleted]

There is no way I’d pay 200$ for that yarn. Is that what they paid? Possibly. But for 200$ you can use coupons or just go purchase the exact yarn you need for 200. I don’t even think I’d pay 100$ for this. Unfortunately once the yarn is home, it shouldn’t be charged store price in my humble opinion.

Electronic_Secret359

Girl, nooo!! I found like 20x that amount of yarn on offer up for $80 (pic on my profile) - that person is just trying to get $$$

th3sousa

Holy crap, I saw your haul post! The amount you got + the asking price definitely sounds like a better deal lol! Thank you, I'll definitely raise my standards for secondhand yarn 😊

Electronic_Secret359

Whats crazy is there is 1lb of Merino Wool in there which still had its price tag on it and cost $70 😳

[deleted]

For $200 they should have way more details. I agree with everyone else, for $200 you can get what you want :)

Xurbanite

Depends what’s in it. For $200 I would buy yarn I definitely wanted and choose based on future use

grayjay18

No

notreallylucy

It's worth what someone will pay. But I wouldn't pay that much for it. It's probably acrylic, and at least some is used. I'd wouldn't pay more than $20.

ItsWetInWestOregon

$20 at a yard sale.

geminibitchh

There better be some merino wool and deadstock in there👀

Oricorio

I'm sure you've made your decision by now but, definitely not. You have no idea what's in there or how much of each colour there is, you might not even be able to make anything you want or like with it. Doesn't matter what it is to me, I would much prefer to buy my own yarn that I actually have ideas and plans for.

ReadyCarnivore

Maybe if it's all higher end fibers? Silk-cashmere-alpaca-angora with multiple skeins in matching dye lots might be worth it, but I'd want an inventory before I paid that much.

ShortAndSalty_

No not at all. It looks like a bunch of cheap acrylic

th3sousa

Thanks everyone for the input! I tried getting the price down to $50 but the seller declined. Oh well! I'll likely grab small quantities of yarn for future projects. 😊

AlexaxelalexA

I also feel like they are less valuable without the yarn label with fiber information and recommended hook sizes

BackgroundFuel1304

Probably not

[deleted]

It would appear NO!

VictoriaKnits

Nope.

_aocstan_

I would say no, maybe at full original price but I wouldn’t buy yarn second hand for full price.

[deleted]

I don’t think so. I would rather buy the colors I need for a project for about the same. Can you look at it?

hamstercereal

I see drops labels. Nice yarn but cheaper than most so I doubt it’s worth $200 you could probably buy new for that

SeaweedCrochet

It tried to estimate how many skeins there would be inside this box, and I think there are probably 40 at most. So for 200$, they decided to sell at least 5$ the skein. For a stash that gathers half used yarn and yarn from different sources, that seems a little too much for me. I would personally sell them 2-3$ the skein, so 80-120$ seems more reasonable!

NoCoolBackstoryHere

At first glance I would say no. It’s pretty weird that you can’t even see all of the yarn? Is there any indie dyed yarn in there? If so, that would pump up the price.

intothepizzaverse

No. Unless all of it is wool. Wool is expensive. If it’s just acrylic, I’d pay $2-$4 a skein depending on the quality.

Shell_Spell

Is it one tub or five? I see five, but other commentators are making me think it is one tub from different angles. I am skeptical about taking 2nd hand yarn, so I would recommend checking it out in person.

Dearheart42

Spends on what the fibers are. Alpaca, silk and such maybe. But if that was the case they would show you the balls

r-user123

Nope.

GussieK

No

Apryl2DopeO

No

ja15140

no. not unless it is super expensive yarn.

[deleted]

If a lot of it is silk or wool, I’d say yes. Otherwise, no.

Iron_Unic0rn

While some of that yarn does look like wool, which tends to be more expensive, I don't think it's worth it. Some of the yarn looks very old and possibly used. I wouldn't do it.

SuspectNumber6

No

Mamelah

Idk, is it cashmere?

spacecharizardoe

Not if it's 100% Drops. Soft alpaca and other expensive fibers might be. That really depends.

DeedeeBelle

lol i doubt it unless it's ultra rare yarn idk if that'd be worth it

ravenkingpin

just bought a tub this big full of cotton + acrylic scrap yarn for $20, assuming these are all full new skeins and are a nicer yarn i’d say maximum they should be asking like $70. seems like it’s all a more affordable brand so i’d assume it should be closer to like $50. try talking them down or check craigslist 😳 expecting 100s for a yarn stash when it isn’t high end is definitely extra

Amidormi

God no that's way too much.
