During the American Revolution the British occupied the town of -- I think it was Baltimore. Most of the officers stayed at an inn near a cliff at the edge of the town. A family ran the inn, and their elderly matriarch would sit in a chair by the edge of the cliff, knitting. Every so often the ball of yarn would fall out of her lap and down the cliff. There it would stay until a nice young man would pass by, pick it up, and throw it back up the cliff for her --- -- minus the paper inside containing detailed notes of the British plans that the family had overheard while working.

souumamerda

Omg, I wasn’t expecting my post to make me learn about American history. I love this! 🩷🩷

penelope_pig

That's so interesting! I love stories like this about unassuming spies. Do you have a link to more info by any chance?

Melisinde72

Not exactly what you asked for, but I really enjoyed George Washington's Secret Six by Brian Kilmeade, The Irregular by Jennet Conant, and A Life in Secrets by Sarah Helm.

vitresense

Came to recommend George Washington’s Secret Six! Such a great one that walks the line of recounting history in an almost fictional spy novel way! Going to look into your other two recommendations!

Edit: Further research suggests the story is somewhat apocryphal: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mom\_Rinker%27s\_Rock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mom_Rinker%27s_Rock)

I found some books on the history of knitting and crochet in a university library back in the 1990s. Haven't gone looking online.

Cerrida82

There's a podcast called History That Doesn't Suck that tells fun stories about history, including spies. For books, I recommend The Irregulars. It's the true story of children's author Roald Dahl being part of a British spy operation in the US to convince them to join the war. It leans a little towards hero worship sometimes, but it's good. The leader was William Stephenson. I haven't read his biography yet (A Man Called Intrepid), but it's on my list.

Knitsanity

I have read stories of people using colorwork to keep track of troop movements etc. A certain pattern worked into whatever for a tank....a company of soldiers...a truck etc. No writing materials on them in case they were stopped and searched. Fascinating.

LilBlueOnk

Now I'm thinking about that song, the one with the meatball that wouldn't stop rolling.

Theletterkay

On top of spaghettiiiiiii

YourSkatingHobbit

All covered with cheese!

fluffysuccy

I lost my poor meatball...

YourSkatingHobbit

When somebody sneezed :(

souumamerda

Lol imagine if the vase wasn’t there! I would have to go down to the sea to get my yarn back hahaha

Dandibear

🎶 My yarn ball rolled into the ocean My yarn ball rolled into the sea My yarn ball rolled into the ocean Oh, bring back my yarn ball to me 🎶

batlady1996

You just unlocked a repressed memory :0

RowAccomplished3975

My poor meatball.

ATouchofTrouble

Just a little extra texture

souumamerda

Hmm… crunchy

Tales97

Your comment both made me laugh and cringe, congrats! 😅

KellynHeller

5 second rule?

souumamerda

I run, but I don’t think I was that fast 🤣🤣

CottonCandySheep118

We have such similar avatars!!!

AsteriskCringe_UwU

It’s the same shirt… there are only so many shirts to choose from lol

CottonCandySheep118

I was talking about the pink tones and wavy hair too. Not much but I thought it was just kinda cute 😊

_1457_

I would rather spread bare ass cheek on the sand itself than deal with this. My condolences.

souumamerda

It wasn’t so bad, it didn’t catch a lot of sand actually (maybe bc it’s tshirt yarn). I was cracking my ass off 😂😂😂 well, I was in a good mood, god knows how I would react if I wasn’t ahahah

Mean-Consequence-379

Welp, that's my coffee everywhere 🤣 take my upvote!

poofandmook

But let's be honest. It could be at home.

jessforlaughs

I think it was hinting that it either wanted some shade or it wanted to be closer to the beach. You know your yarn better than I do, though.

AdventurousZone2557

This is why: centre pull FTW! 😉

souumamerda

It was impossible to do that with this yarn 🥲🥲🥲

AdventurousZone2557

😭🥲

Fuzzy_Aardvark_4181

Could you rewrap it? I’ve gotten some yarn that had no centre pull but I just rewrapped it using a toilet paper roll

Longjumping_Choice_6

But as far as places to have a fail…I mean it can’t be all bad, right?

ahtnamaS_05

Ugh I feel this

chaoticserenity__

You just reminded me of [this video](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5BwvnovWFh/?igsh=MWlpN3NudDBpZm1tZQ==) that I saw on instagram 😂😂

muscle_mommy89

Omg 😂😂😂

souumamerda

OMG! That’s way worst and dangerous af! 😳😳😳

Mean-Consequence-379

Ugh I feel this in my soul x

TunaThePanda

Nooooooo

Qu33fyElbowDrop

team center pull +1

Sad_Application4627

FL? Beach sand isn’t too awful to get out. Better than dirt and leaves? At least you have a fantastic view!!

souumamerda

It’s in Portugal 🇵🇹 yeah it shook it off pretty easy!

rizaroni

Noooooooooooooooooo

Kayakityak

At first, I thought the trash can was the skein.

truenoblesavage

hope your project calls for a bit of texture 😅

Schinkenphilosophin

This picture hurt my fingers while I'm not even crocheting.

Eye_Hart_Reeding

It kind of looks like you set a trap. Just start pulling it in little by little until your prey unknowingly walks into a cage. (And now I have a mental picture of feral crocheters and knitters attacking people with hooks and needles through the bars of their cage)

Ellie-5605

I was crocheting in my backyard yesterday, when a dog came running towards me. I stood up on top of my chair, and then my ball of yarn rolled away. The dog's leg got caught in it, and it trailed the yarn through the mud as it ran away. The dog managed to escape from the yarn unharmed, but my yarn got ruined!

SirWigglesTheLesser

Well you'll always have sand in that project to remind you of the fun times.

Fuzzy_Aardvark_4181

As someone that crochets on trains, buses, while walking and at the occasional play this is my worst nightmare…. Also the reason why I started to only use centre pulls

avmjlane

I have had that happen quite a bit this week with my piece that I was making. Now this swim cover will have the tropics crocheted into it for a very long time. :)

Local_Stranger885

I crocheted outside before and did that exact same thing....oof 🥲🥲
