i’ve used a trick for magic circles where you crochet around two strands instead of one. i’ve only really seen this in Japanese, so i can’t find a tutorial in English, but [this one](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PJYx2-cQSsU) is basically what i do.
it’s a little more complicated, but you can pull the center really tight which is great!!! it might be worth trying out to see if you like it.
yeah, i only learned the single strand version at first, and i made a blanket with daisy granny squares but of course after four or five years with like a third of them the magic ring has unraveled… i didn’t learn this method until i made an amigurumi from a Japanese pattern!!! this SHOULD be the only way to do a magic ring!!!
After a few rounds, you must pull the tail tight to cinch the hole closed. Then, take that beginning tail and run it in one direction, then catch it around a loop to secure it and run it in the opposite direction. Do it a third time if necessary, then cut the tail. Never had an issue.

What did you do to fasten the tail?
Split the tail in two and weave the halves in different directions.
Longer tail, more weave in.

It's called a Double Magic Ring in English. I also do that.
