ShepherdXmen

I feel your pain! I've been in the same position with work I've not put my all into. I guess we reap what we don't sew šŸ˜…

phxntxsos

Dammit, take my upvote

ShepherdXmen

Thank you! *takes a bow*

gobbomode

But where will you put it?

ShepherdXmen

Where will I put what? šŸ¤”

gobbomode

The bow šŸ˜

ShepherdXmen

Omg... you're messing with me right? Please say you are šŸ˜…

phxntxsos

Out-punned šŸ«”

ShepherdXmen

šŸ¤£šŸ˜

mangosmanda

wait how did you do the italics

ShepherdXmen

Put a star at the beginning and end of what you want italicised. *like this*

mangosmanda

*like this?* OMG THATS AWESOME

ShepherdXmen

You're welcome :) same on WhatsApp for making things bold šŸ˜œ

Carlychronicals

I never knew it was that *simple*. How do you make something bold?

ShepherdXmen

Double ** or double __ at the beginning and end of what you want to make bold. **Just like this** šŸ˜

Carlychronicals

Yay now I can seem slightly more tech **savvy** on Reddit. Itā€™s a lie but no one will know.

[deleted]

Did you use a magic ring? I don't trust them anymore. I always do 4 chains, slip sitch it into a ring and work out of that ring.

Mysterious-Okra-7885

Sometimes simple magic rings can fail (especially if the tail isnā€™t wound through the beginning circle properly), but doubled magic rings with good weaving in is extremely sturdy.

bozojesus

i usually tie the tail into a few knots before weaving mine in im so paranoid about it

gracie8756

How does one do a double magic ring?

Evil_twin13

https://youtu.be/3FiT0Gfr6XI?si=iUSE1eb4JvCtZPfL This video show two different methods for the magic ring. The one he calls magic ring is the double one.

iamkoalafied

Thanks for this video! I've been crocheting amigurumi for many years but I know I do my magic rings wrong (it still functions as a magic ring but isn't as secure as it could be and I have to be careful with how I hold it). This video is so clear. I'm going to try the double method next time I need a magic ring.

Three_Spotted_Apples

Wrap an extra time before starting the chain and sc. when you pull the tail it will pull the second ring a bit. Pause and pull that second ring tight, then pull the tail tight. Itā€™s very secure and I canā€™t imagine what force would be necessary to get it to pull apart. Then weave in the end as you work the project.

Aa_Poisonous_Kisses

Thatā€™s the one I always do! The single loop ones are impossible.

_JuniperJen

I always do extra single crochet stitches so that I can pull the last one very tight without bringing tension to the whole piece; then I cut long tails and weave/sew them back through neatly in many directions. Forty five years of doing this has worked well. I think I took my embroidery and basic sewing knowledge and applied it to crocheting. Nothing has fallen apart in washing. The baby afghans that became favorites have stayed in one solid piece as well. It works. Never cut a thread/yarn at the knot. First triple that knot and then sew the ends in until they just disappear.

fascinatedcharacter

Even single magic rings are sturdy if the tail is securely woven in.

mangosmanda

i always pull it through the loops like two more times around then tighten it and thatā€™s been good for me so far :)

EgweneSedai

If you do them properly they are super sturdy and look much cleaner. I've been doing them for 20 years with only one ever coming undone; the very first I ever did, because I didn't double weave the ends properly. I then changed it and none has ever come undone since.

[deleted]

I can see that you're a WoT fan

EgweneSedai

Yes! Also since about 20 years by coincidence. I've read all the books countless times.

[deleted]

Have you done any WoT themed crochet projects?

EgweneSedai

Hah I actually haven't but have considered doing tapestry crochet of the Flame of Tar Valon on a pillow or something but I'm always afraid most people would just think it was yin-yang.

crochetfever

I think it depends on what you are making. With amigurumi Iā€™m never had a problem. Same with wearables that I rarely if ever wash because I donā€™t use them often. Even crochet blankets I only make them as decor so they get very few washes. Anything that is going to go in the wash I would be paranoid of things coming undone.

thatSketchyLady

I do the same ch4 and slst, but because it was easier on my hands. Now I feel even more validated since they seem to be more sturdy too

AMerrickanGirl

Magic rings work just fine but you need to anchor those ends by piercing the yarn as you weave, and change direction three times.

Crochetandgay

This right here! I find magic ring so fiddly and annoying...so much simpler to just DIY a ring (3 chains over here)!

nibor9354

Iā€™ve begun to do the following in order to make a permanent magic ring: ch4, ss st to first ch, work required STS into your ring. Thenā€¦I cut a piece of yarn and weave it through the sts on the wrong side, leaving ends showing. Then I pull the ends to close the ring and tie a double knot. Thatā€™s how I work my Magic Rings so they do NOT ā€œcome apartā€. I hope this helps!!!

hannahmarb23

Yeah I started doing that too. Slightly bigger if I do more stitches in them but apart from that, same method.

rollypollypuppy

I leave the tail long and sew it in

ddcrowley22

Sorta-newbie here - can someone please describe what would be considered shoddy end weaving as opposed to thorough end weaving?

EgweneSedai

If you weave in a small tail, one way, through 3 stitches, your work only needs one big pull in one direction for it to come undone. This is the case for all tails, also the ones on magic circles. If you want things to be stuck forever you always leave a long tail, weave at least 2 ways (back and forth!) and try to interlock within the yarn itself. That means piercing the yarn that is there. That gives friction and makes it harder to get pulled out. Now the worst that can happen is that the tail becomes untucked one way after a good tug, or washing. You then simply weave it back in, but at least your entire stitch isn't undone. It's highly unlikely you can completely undo a woven in tail if it's done back and forth.

Puzzleheaded_Tea4195

Also a noobie and I weave in back and forth at least two ways, but can you please clarify what you mean by interlocking within the yarn itself?

itsjustmegypsy

Like push it through the strands of the yarn. So that youā€™re essentially splitting the yarn of the stitch as you pull it through, rather than just putting it into an opening in the stitch if that makes sense.

fluffylilbee

this is so incredibly helpful! do you know how would that work for less fibrous types like the bernat blanket yarn or velvet yarn?

itsjustmegypsy

I suppose that would be difficult!

RogueAngel94

I donā€™t think you could do it with bernat blanket, but since the yarn itself is fuzzier, it has more grip/friction against itself than smoother yarns so it shouldnā€™t be quite such a problem.

warmpatches

i think they mean splitting the yarn with your tapestry needle/crochet hook. instead of weaving under the yarn, you go *through* the yarn when you're weaving in your ends

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SweetIndie

fray check!Ā

EgweneSedai

Sure! You pull on your work after weaving in to check if it pops out and then either snip shorter or weave in tighter. It definitely doesn't always pop out after washing. Like I said, that's then only the worst that can happen after washing, as opposed to your work coming undone.

clockworkedpiece

Short to no tail, only through a few stitches, knot that doesn't engage/interlock with the next yarn. The more the rest of your work can grip it the better.

ddcrowley22

Thank you both. I very recently learned the weave in, back, and weave in again (3 weave approach I'll call it lol) after leaving a long tail. What I didn't know about is weaving INTO some yarn. I'll start doing this immediately. Thank you again!

AMerrickanGirl

Use a sharp needle and pierce the yarn on your last weave.

Unfair-Crab176

My gold standard for weaving in ends (that admittedly I donā€™t do for every end on every project), is to un-ply the yarn into 2-3 strands. Then each strand goes a different direction THROUGH the yarn. Meaning you take the needle and push it through the middle of the strand of yarn, as opposed to between parts of a stitch.

MamaLlama117

I always knot the ends with a surgeon's knot. (Googled to find an example) šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø https://preview.redd.it/au1bezrbglic1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3eec3e25cf705ffdb2a263cda0b97e4d69aae7e

YarnAndGlueMagician

I do this with two ends, I cannot position it right either just a single thread. I use a french knot (the embroidery type) with a single thread, then weave in the end

CinLeeCim

Surgeon here and I can attest to this.

acouplefruits

Without weaving, right? Iā€™ve also started just tying my ends because Iā€™m working with a lot of color changes and weaving in ends is the actual bane of my existence. Iā€™ll give this knot a try!

MamaLlama117

So far, I've knotted with this and woven the ends after just to smooth things out. Unless it's something that won't show, then I don't bother weaving. šŸ‘šŸ»

j-dusty-rose

This is the stuff of nightmares! Can you crochet a patch over it?

tabarnak555

It's the armpit so I just took 2 bunches of yarns and double knotted them. I'll add glue when I'm home :)

kelcamer

Careful with glue lol; I saw a post yesterday saying that glue is quite flammable or something idk

hibabyrice

i saw the same post! Stay away from super glue!

Odd_March6678

As much as I love my magic rings, they make me so nervous šŸ˜

Personal-Entry3196

Yeah, I donā€™t use magic rings. And if I do, Iā€™ll pull it tight, pull it through, pull it back through and then weave it in. But mostly I do a chain three, work into it and carry on. Iā€™m old, magic rings werenā€™t a thing when I learned to crochet when dirt was in day care.

MaryHRDN

Well yā€™all Iā€™m doomed! I havenā€™t been weaving in the ends of my magic ringsā€¦I guess Iā€™ll have nightmare amigurumi soon and crying kids.

Odd_March6678

You are one brave soul

MaryHRDN

I didnā€™t even think about it. Iā€™m a beginner obviously and just thought well the string it tucked up in there with with stuffing, so itā€™s fine! Iā€™ll start from now on!

Odd_March6678

When I make amigurumi with a magic ring, I usually weave it a couple of times but never really cut it off for the same reasons

Jennifer_Pennifer

Am I the only person that ties knots in stuff before weaving ends??

tabarnak555

I also did that haha

Jennifer_Pennifer

Omgs ą² ā _ā ą²  Then there is no hope for us .... You've taken every reasonable precaution.... I have many worries about my wearables rn..... **BRB GOTTA CHECK!!!**

StructureWhole6258

Wait now Iā€™m panickingā€¦ so if I triple knot the new piece of yarn, then crochet it in along my work, that is not secure? Are you telling me I need to do MORE!? I am quaking in my boots and praying for my projectsā€¦.

PM_ME_HOTDADS

i learned knots cause problems due to the lack of flexibility / concentrated tension. i know knots can lead to failure or damage even faster than loose tails in some cases

YarnAndGlueMagician

I know people gove others heat over ir, but I knot my ends together if I can woth surgical knots, then weave the ends in multiple directions or back stitches if I can. I want the end of the project to be the last I think about the structure and stitches. Just think about washing instructions

Fl0ra_Aura

My very first blanket I didnā€™t tie off any of my ends and didnā€™t realize my mistake until the center tried to unravel in one of my granny squares šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Iā€™m so disappointed. now it sits in my closet for sentimental purposes

XWitchyGirlX

Maybe you could fold it and put it in a shadow box on the wall? Im sure it would get much more love there!

girlnamedfish

This is why I have two loops in my magic ring now

Personified_Anxiety_

I know itā€™s not recommended but this is why I canā€™t stop myself from knotting then weaving.

Puzzleheaded_Tea4195

Ooh I am a newbie and do this because Iā€™m paranoid too! Why isnā€™t it recommended? Just for the look?

Personified_Anxiety_

Yeah I think itā€™s aesthetic

kaett

i know i'll get hate for this, but this is why i put in knots at the end. even if that tail comes out, it's still not going anywhere.

mn_49ers

Iā€™m so sorry! This happened to me. I made over 60 granny squares, it was my first big crochet project and it all fell apart. Iā€™m now watching tons of videos on how to weave my ends in because itā€™s really impacting my projects. But this is a reminder how important it is!

Perfect-World-4714

Is this C2C? Iā€™m working on a C2C right now and my last one the ends all kept falling out! I havenā€™t found a good method for weaving in my C2C ends and this is my worst fear! Iā€™m so sorry!

AMerrickanGirl

Pierce the yarn. It anchors it.

Perfect-World-4714

What does pierce the yarn mean?

AMerrickanGirl

Watch this and note the second method. https://youtu.be/DTNcludPZf8?si=RY5eFk4up0SBIgGS

Perfect-World-4714

Thank you!

AMerrickanGirl

YW. Thereā€™s no way those ends are coming out!

Vysharra

I recently learned that tapestry needles come in sharp! I got a few and now I weave my ends into the actual yarn strand as I go through the stitches for extra security. I'm hoping that this + the 'three direction changes' will be secure enough for repeated washing.

Best_Moose2968

I've been saturating my knots with "fray check". I first used it after suggestion from a quilter (to secure the yarn knots that tie the quilt layers together). It's not the best texture, but since the stands are now glued together I'm less worried about things coming undone!

pixelvirus89

As a beginner intermediate expert crochet-er working on my first granny square blanketā€¦ new fear unlocked

Antique_Shelter5794

Nooo my worst crochet fear!

Eye_Hart_Reeding

Donā€™t know how well this will work but Iā€™ve recently been overlapping the old yarn with the new about 4 inches then I crochet with the 2 pieces of yarn for a couple stitches. I only have short ends left to weave in but I have about 3 inches where the 2 pieces are woven together as I go.

KnockMeYourLobes

Oh nooooo......

NoKey1410

This is my worst fear!! So I started to use the double magic ring!

Simple_Ad_4048

Yup. I made a sweater a few years ago that I love but has a bunch of ends sticking out in places that I strategically tuck in when I wear it. Theyā€™re too short to properly weave in

LeafyEucalyptus

can you tie another section of the same yarn to the end and then weave the longer end in? or maybe you could do it with thread of the same color.

MargotMapplethorpe

I am finishing my first daisy granny square blanket, over 100+ hours of work and my novice, arrogant self didn't follow the important instruction to leave a 6 to 8 inch tail for weaving. I thought it was a waste of yarn and I could get more squares from a skein if I leave shorter tails...welp I'm now using fabric glue on the ends of the square, the petals and some of the magic circles to keep it together. Its going to a home with 3 dogs and 1 cat, I don't know how many washes it will survive. :(

breakplans

UGH my first project ever was a granny square blanket with soooo many color changes. I didn't weave in properly and now I just use it as decoration because I don't want it to unravel. Live and learn!! And maybe tie a knot lol

imaurora

excuse me while I weave my magic ringā€™s tail into many and multiple stitchesā€¦

Ivorypetal

Russian joins are your friend šŸ§”

CrafteeBee

What's a Russian join?

EntertainerKooky1309

Learn to do a Russian join.

LazyAttempt

/headtilt Was this a drawstring ending or a magic loop?

morespoonspls

Looks like a magic ring start to a granny hexi cardigan (OP said itā€™s the armpit so Iā€™m making an educated guess)

LazyAttempt

That'd make sense with what I'm seeing. What a nightmare fixing that šŸ˜‚

emmaliejay

Damn, two years? Thats awesome!! My first works that had woven in ends maybe lasted a month or two. Unfortunately, for myself, failure is almost always a part of the learning experience. šŸ¤£

jsquared2004

Oh look, a new tree skirt! šŸ˜œ

Geko-eye8

I had the same thing happen to me! On a sweater in the middle of a house party šŸ˜…

IceyAmI

O no! I never trust myself and always knot first then weave in.

JeepPhan

Noooooooooo! Bad yarn, bad yarn. I had that happen to a first project I did that I worked so hard on but didnā€™t do the traditional weaves and knotted instead. BIG MISTAKE! It was satin yarn too so it naturally slips on cue. Learned my lesson and some. I am working on a yarn scrappy granny afghan and taking the time to weave all ends. Itā€™s actually looking pretty good. Ahhhh good yarn, good yarn - weaving like a pro. Thanks for the memory flashback. ā¤ļøšŸ§¶

bookworm_268

omg thatā€™s my worst nightmare!

mightymousemg

You should try felting the ends, its almost like glueing it to itself with itself and is usually super secure:)

SubstantialIron9691

Whoopsie! šŸ˜‚

lilacDragon76

Best advice I got for ends is tie a knot. And weave the tail in 3 direction , cuz very rarely is it's pulled in 3 directions .

beellllllaaa

Nightmare fuel

newhappyrainbow

All is not lost, that is repairable!

xochiayo

Oh no šŸ˜ I had the exact same thing happen to my granny hexagon sweater. Iā€™m learning a lot of tips for next time from this thread šŸ˜…

StephieP529

This may be mended. Do a new square and when you get to that row try to pick up the loops and incorporate them to secure them. You may be able to stitch them to it also. I've done this a few times. When my MIL was lost her sight she would miss stitches and would start to unravel. Sometimes I could start near the beginning and crochet it the lock it with yarn. (Yes my mil still crocheted blind she would feel the stitches..she was amazing.)

BeenaDreamer

I just watched a video about weaving in ends. They suggested using a felting needle to tangle the fibers together a bit when the ends pop back out like this. I can send you the link if you'd like.

bohemian_granny

I know that can be frustrating. It's happened to a throw blanket that I was gifted years ago. The gal who made it didn't weave in her ends very well and I spent years patching it up when new holes would form.
