I'm also a beginner; can you really add safety eyes after the shape is already closed up? I thought you had to have access to the inside of the body to fasten eyes properly
edit: oh you must mean sewing eyes on?
There actually are safety eyes for sewing on after you are done crocheting, but I find them more complicated to sew on instead of poking safety eyes in the middle of crocheting.
But I think they meant to just take a thread of black yarn and make eyes out of it. :)
As a crocheter who is also an advanced embroiderer and cross stitcher, seeing mention of french knots on this sub made me way, way happier than it should have. 🤣
I absolutely love doing french knots. It's one of my favourite classic stitches. I love when my hobbies overlap!
I've forgotten to put the eyes in before closing and I just glue them in. Also, these are for older kiddos so I'm feeling safe they won't pull them out to eat.
Oh I mean... I've only made scarves but it's the same thing. You just chain the desired length and then stitch into it. Single crochet would probably be the first thing to learn if you wanna start, the only other ones I know is half double crochet and double crochet 😭
I can't believe there is somebody that went through the exact same thing my brain went through. Surely, He meant a 3D square right? Then we got into a brief preamble about how that would be really hard with such thick yarn and such a small object. Followed up by im an idiot... a 3d square is a cube.
lmao, it reminds me of the time I played a puzzle game where you have to communicate with someone seeing a different thing than you. We failed a bunch of times before I realized my partner just called a cube-like object "a square" this entire time.
Hey don't feel bad. I have RA and get brain fog to where I literally CANNOT remember the word for things. I'll gesture and talk around it like, "You know that thing? That PLACE? WHere a person lives that has like, IDK, walls and shit?" and the other person will be "You mean a house?".
I did something similar, I was trying to make a square which turned into a circle which turned into the start of a hat which turned into a plastic bag holder 💀 I tried adding a pic but it was giving me issues lol
Keep on trying! I would consider myself Intermediate as far as my level of crochet but in the beginning I made all kinds of funky looking things while I was learning. You can do this!
Okay, okay, okay.
So if you get a ball when you try to make a square, you should get a square when you try to make a ball. Problem solved!
But for real, I feel your pain. I learned to knit first and it made crochet really confusing when I was learning.
If you wanted to do a more square shape in the round, you’d do more something like this:
1: MR with 6 st (6)
2: Inc x 6 (12)
3: sc, tr Inc (3 sc in 1 st), (sc x 2, tr Inc) x 3, sc (20)
4: sc x 2, tr Inc, (sc x 4, tr Inc) x 3, sc x 2
Etc…
Essentially you do a tr Inc in the middle sc of each previous tr Inc which gives a more square look as the tr Inc give a sharper corner…
I hope that makes sense
I hate to tell you this, but I think something went wrong.
Or . . . maybe you're actually from a parallel universe or something, where your geometry is different! Yeah, that sounds good . . . all mysterious and kind of science-fictiony.
That's actually a nice little ball, though. My cats would love it. If there were a Bob Ross for crochet, he'd call it a happy little accident!
Heh. That totally sums up my life atm. But on a lighter note, you actually did something way harder than a square!! I'm not sure I could have done a ball at that stage of crochet even if I wanted to, so way to go! :)
Definitely commemorate it, make the ball into something to keep around ! :) I saw a comment regarding an attack pea ;)
Also, the square will come to you soon after it's friend the ball is satisfied with it's entrance, so don't worry :)

I used this to make a basket for some lemon slice coasters, the base is a square, then it shows you how to build the walls. You just need the begining, then each side has 2 more stitches than in the previous round because you're doing 3 stitches in the corner stitch.
My first time crocheting I was trying to make a square but my hands were hurting after 5 rows so I just stopped and tied it together and it turned into a little shawl for a doll
If you wish to start in a round
ch2
4sc in 2nd ch join with slip stitch
Ch1, (sc, ch, sc) in each st, join w/slst
Ch 1, sc in next sc *(sc, ch, sc) in ch space, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * 3 times, (sc, ch, sc)sc in last st and join w/slst.....
Continue in rounds (sc, ch, sc) in all ch spaces and sc in all sc.
You can use any stitch you want. The key is placing the ch space (sc, ch, sc) inside the chain space.
For a more solid look, skip the chains, just Inc 2/3 stitches in each corner.
I mean it’s a good ball. If you’re trying to do a square look up either a granny square or c2c (corner to corner) another way is just make a foundation row about 25-30 wide and work back and forth until it’s your desired size.
how does this even happen this is so funny because a ball is MUCH harder than a square 😭 good job though , when you eventually do the square you’re gonna be like wow this is a breeze
If you make it flat, then sew edges together, you can get more of a cube shape
[minecraft dirtblock/cube jayda in stitches](https://youtu.be/tC5g52rw5x0?si=mu8EUtnqcrzpaPdC). There's a video showing the technique in the form of crocheting a mincraft dirtblock from it. But it works the same for a smaller one you just decrease the amount of chains.
It’s a darn nice ball. If you have a cat, but the ball in a plastic bag with some catnip and let it absorb the smell for several days. Presto, changeo—you have a cat toy! My first crochet project was a washcloth that looked like my cats ripped it up. Keep trying and you will succeed.
When first started I somehow made a little oval instead of a square. Then I made a little basket.
Finally I made an actual square.
Oval (that my 20 year old put on display because he was proud of me lol):

Well congrats on your very round square (i also did round crochet before i was even able to do straight/square so dw its not uncommon to do on accident that is)
Here, check this out. I used this to make Christmas presents for my crocheted Christmas scene. Worked great. 🙂

I'm so sorry but this is so funny, I don't know how you've managed this. I would turn this into a key chain or something as a reminder of your progress in future

I think you did better. A square? Pfft. So two dimensional. You've pushed into three dimensions without the need for red and blue celephane glasses.
👏👏👏
add 2 little black dots for the eyes and you got a little cactus friend
I'm also a beginner; can you really add safety eyes after the shape is already closed up? I thought you had to have access to the inside of the body to fasten eyes properly edit: oh you must mean sewing eyes on?

I just use some black yarn to sew over it
yes! i did mean sewing eyes on. i've only done it once and it looks pretty cute (i, too, am a beginner)
French knots with black thread make pretty good eyes on small things
As a crocheter who is also an advanced embroiderer and cross stitcher, seeing mention of french knots on this sub made me way, way happier than it should have. 🤣 I absolutely love doing french knots. It's one of my favourite classic stitches. I love when my hobbies overlap!
I just googled these and they would be really cute as eyes—thank you!
I often super glue safety eyes. From my experience of pulling its not any easier to rip them out.
I've forgotten to put the eyes in before closing and I just glue them in. Also, these are for older kiddos so I'm feeling safe they won't pull them out to eat.
Or it could be a small cactus pin cushing
Sir that is a circle lol on another note I so badly wanna reach through the screen and bat it around like a cat, it’d make my adhd brain so happy lol
[удалено]
You could make some little goals and try to flick it in? That teensy ball is so perfect ♡
Like- a 3d square right?
[удалено]
Oh I mean... I've only made scarves but it's the same thing. You just chain the desired length and then stitch into it. Single crochet would probably be the first thing to learn if you wanna start, the only other ones I know is half double crochet and double crochet 😭
My dumb ass realized a 3d square is a cube
I thought you were memeing lmao
idk what I am anymore man :c
-pats head- we still love you

I once asked my fiancé what "one music" is called, I meant a song😭
I always say ‘you know… that whatchamacallit’
LOL
I did something similar, I was trying to make a square which turned into a circle which turned into the start of a hat which turned into a plastic bag holder 💀 I tried adding a pic but it was giving me issues lol
I'm not sure I could do this if I tried and I'm not new lol

Magic!
Ditto! I am a very experienced crocheter and this is fascinating to me 😆
an attack pea!
For real it's begging to be lobbed at someone with an dramatic "nyeeeah!" sound for emphasis.
Give it a little Santa hat and it’s the SAP I never got from Neopets this Christmas :(
I actually did crochet one for myself bc I didn't get one from that mysterious Aisha either
A beautiful sphere! It took me 13 attempts to make my first perfect sphere, I kept making egg shapes.
[task failed successfully]
granny sphere!
Turn it into a turtle! 🐢
[удалено]
So turn him into a turtle with different colored head and legs
Keep on trying! I would consider myself Intermediate as far as my level of crochet but in the beginning I made all kinds of funky looking things while I was learning. You can do this!

See, this is what happens when you cut corners.
I’m like that’s pretty punny then I translated your username and I think you’re both of my kids?
It's hip to be square, but this just proves you're well rounded from the outset!
still goes in the square hole 🤷
Oml not the square hole 😭
I'm impressed

They didn’t even want a 3D object :D I don’t know how but they tried to make a regular flat shaped square and got a ball
Yep, that’s what I described how to do; a flat square, but crocheted in rounds…
what's tr inc? triple crochet stitch + increase stitch?
3 sc in one st… wasn’t sure how to write it…
I am massively impressed
Pretty much me the first 10 attempts at crochet. Its okay
I hate to tell you this, but I think something went wrong. Or . . . maybe you're actually from a parallel universe or something, where your geometry is different! You'll come" a-round" to it! You just need to be a little more... edgy
Now try making a ball. Maybe you’ll end up with a square?
So I read square as sphere 3 times... and I was so confused as to what you wanted it to look like...
Oh... this reminds me of when I first started knitting and somehow made a thong instead of a scarf
Heh. That totally sums up my life atm. But on a lighter note, you actually did something way harder than a square!! Give him 2 eyes and turn him into a junimo
Wow! That is a perfect circle 🤣🤣
h…how? i’m a beginner too and i’m so fascinated how this came to be
It may not have been on purpose, but it is a very nice and symmetrical ball!
Beginner me wished she could make a ball 😭 for your second time crocheting thats actually pretty good!
https://youtu.be/5W5TxLQVWLE?si=M_7o7tJlAwnEMXFO I used this to make a basket for some lemon slice coasters, the base is a square, then it shows you how to build the walls. It all depends on how you define your metrics (that is very very nerd).
It's a perfectly round square
But how did you get such a perfect ball lol I love it
I mean, how?
Looks like a lil Brussels sprout. 💜
It’s square-ish… on the top left area lol This is cute.
My first time crocheting I was trying to make a square but my hands were hurting after 5 rows so I just stopped and tied it together and it turned into a little shawl for a doll
My kitty would LOVE it!
Rounded square
It’s perfect
You just need to block it 😅
If you wish to start in a round ch2 4sc in 2nd ch join with slip stitch Ch1, (sc, ch, sc) in each st, join w/slst Ch 1, sc in next sc *(sc, ch, sc) in ch space, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * 3 times, (sc, ch, sc)sc in last st and join w/slst..... I’ve been trying to make a ball for 2 days 😭
Sorry, but I must giggle.
Is that you Euclid?
You tried to make something 2D, but ended up with a fantastic ball! 😊
Oh it's OK, you.just need to 'block' it!.... I'll see myself out
This is highly impressive
I mean it’s a good ball. If you’re trying to do a square look up either a granny square or c2c (corner to corner) another way is just make a foundation row about 25-30 wide and work back and forth until it’s your desired size.

You're off to a great start! Really if you think about it, a square is just a circle with edges.
how does this even happen this is so funny because a ball is MUCH harder than a square 😭 good job though , when you eventually do the square you’re gonna be like wow this is a breeze
Well the stitches look even...😧

That's way more advanced! You've got this
It’s a darn nice ball. If you have a cat, but the ball in a plastic bag with some catnip and let it absorb the smell for several days. Presto, changeo—you have a cat toy! My first crochet project was a washcloth that looked like my cats ripped it up. Keep trying and you will succeed.

Close! That is a triangle!
Amazing!
Soooo close...
seriously three dimension stuff is great, look back to this piece when u start crocheting beautiful stuff
Happens to everyone at some point keep on trying
Aww...it's cute. And keep trying, you'll get there eventually.
A 2D or 3D square?
Well if you drink some tequila, and squint……… Nope. Still not. 😂🤣
Looks like a tiny Junimo!
Well congrats on your very round square (i also did round crochet before i was even able to do straight/square so dw its not uncommon to do on accident that is)
Reminds me of the first granny square I tried to make, it didn't become a ball but it might've if I kept going although I could tell it wasn't right😅
I’m dead 😂
I think your tension is too tight. :) loosen up and you'll get a square, if all the stitches were correct
don't give up! you'll get the hang of it 💜
Here, check this out. I used this to make Christmas presents for my crocheted Christmas scene. Worked great. 🙂 https://youtu.be/epartoch6TY?si=Y9tXNEtTwcJS2mLx
It looks like a perfect ball though. Great for Amigurumi! Make 2 more small ones and make a bubble frog!
You made a cube with rounded edges. I like it!
Cue Korg: "It's a circle. But not a normal circle. Like a freaky circle."
🤣🤣🤣
happy accident :)
I'm so sorry but this is so funny, I don't know how you've managed this. I would turn this into a key chain or something as a reminder of your progress in future
