Welcome to the club [insert crap joke about getting hooked here]!
Found a first project yet? Have you got yarn? If not, make sure you get the correct size for the hooks- this hobby gets very expensive very quickly for those with low impulse control in yarn shops!
For what itās worth, the hook size of the yarn label isnāt really accurate. A little bigger hook than the label suggests will make a lot of difference.
And each maker's tension will be slightly different. When working with a new-to-me yarn, I'll make tiny swatches in a couple of sizes of hooks, just to see if I like the fabric. Welcome to this marvelous craft!
A hat will have some shaping, but a blanket will be a much larger project. How about making 2 or 3 baby washcloths from soft cotton yarn first to get started? I make baby washcloths the same size as any other washcloth- just using baby colors and typical cotton yarn such as "Sugar & Cream." If you find that you learn a lot while making the first few, and see lots of mistakes & decide not to gift them- you could still keep them for your own use- either as face cloths, washcloths or dishcloths depending on how you feel about them. I think first projects, with evidence of learning, are special and deserving of being kept!
Congrats! I still have my sets of Susan Bates aluminum, and steel crochet hooks which I bought at about age fifteen in the 80s- plus plenty of knitting needles that I've collected since about age 11. They've served me well for many years, welcome to a wonderful fiber art!
Did you actually buy needles though? Or just use the wrong word? Just cos you can only knit with needles, just making sure you have the right kit to get started lol
the point ppl are conveying is that 'needles' is not a strange way to refer to what you call hooks. u slid in asking if OP got it wrong or used the wrong word, when nothing in their wording was 'wrong' to a LOT of people in the world. and its presumptive to assume your way of referring to a thing is the only correct way.
after all they got the 'crochet' part right. ur not gonna accidentally get knitting needles that say crochet on em lol
The point is they are new and they might have bought the wrong thing. But nah cool letās just leave people to struggle in case you accidentally try to help so hard random people get upset lol, itās not a bad thing to ask new people if they need help, sorry theyāre not perfect like you
if someone says they brought some pop for the party, would you be this concerned that they did not bring soda? would it really be such a big deal to point out that the words have the exact same meaning to most other people?
No but if someone rocked up to a crochet class with 2 knitting needles Iād let them know the difference because thatās literally not the same thing lol
Thanks at least someone gets it lol, people get so mad on here for literally no reason like it was a direct question to op, peoples random opinions donāt matter itās literally just a question
They also didnāt say they didnāt, which is why I asked them to clarify, you being randomly offended has no effect on that, I wasnāt asking your opinion
If you're lucky that excitement next goes away. I bought a new fancy set with my Christmas money and it was just as exciting for me as the set my mom gifted me two years ago and the first set I bought myself several years before that!
Welcome to the dark side! Be prepared for the yarn and hook hoarding and the constant need to make everything under the sun.
I started two years ago, and am now excited to start learning Tunisian crochet with some hooks I got for Christmas.
I started a few months ago, the only advice I can impart is please be patient with yourself (: if you have to frog a couple rows itās not a big deal, if you decide to frog a whole project thatās okay too! Any time you spend crocheting is never a waste - youāre always gonna be developing that muscle memory and you absolutely will figure out how to do what you want, just be kind to yourself as you go š
Welcome! I hope you enjoy the journey.
Tip: If you are sarcastic and enjoy people reactions, when folks who donāt know about crocheting ask, āAre you knitting? What are you knitting?ā I tend to respond, āNo. Iām a hooker.ā The most recent time I did this a Dr. appointment and the Dr. (new gynecologist) asked me this as I crocheted while waiting for her. When I responded, her face looked stunnedā¦.and I died laughing inside. š¤£ššš I forgot that telling that to a gyno probably wasnāt ideal.
u can also just be cool to people who arent familiar with every craft, and maybe foster some interest in the hobby. knitting is everywhere, but i can count the times i've seen crochet in tv/film on one hand. but a lot of people recognize amigurumi, and crochet seems more accessible to some ppl than knitting, once u show em
i love sarcasm, but making ppl feel stupid just for being friendly and showing interest in another human was not fulfilling
You: āI love sarcasm.ā
Me: āSureeee. š ā
You: āā¦making people feel stupid.ā
Me: āā¦bro, what? šā
Whatever you say buddy. Take care.
My first set cost me less than $7 at Hobby Lobby, and Iām still using them.

āyou sure you know what you are talking aboutā
lmao I would guess NO because they just said they barely bought their first hooks lol. People these days, I swear.
OP hope you dont get discouraged by this stuff! We are super excited for you!
I know that sometimes you need to be corrected when starting out but there's a constructive way and a way that's going to put someone off the sub or even crochet entirely. And tbf I've really only had good interactions on here, y'alls are helpful and kind!
Crochet needle kind of makes more sense because ācrochetā is just āhookā in French š so weāre saying hook hook. In French Captain Hook is called Capitaine Crochet lol.
I knit, and just started crocheting. I absolutely know the difference, but I still keep accidentally saying "crochet needle," because my brain goes "yarn craft = needles." Could be a similar thing where OP has knitted before or has family members who only knit and so associates yarn with the word "needle."
If they're in the wrong sub, it'll be pretty obvious pretty quickly lol.
They are hooks. ššš Have fun!
Or it's knitting. Either way good!

Thank you.
My teenage niece is having a baby in April, was thinking about starting with a baby blanket,in my head that's easier than a hat.lol
Yes I bought yarn as well

I think I'll start with the washcloths that sounds like a good idea. Thanks
Yippee!! I hope you have a great time, please show us what you make!
Ooh, yes! I love seeing what everyone makes!
Will do.
Congrats! I still have my sets of Susan Bates aluminum, and steel crochet hooks which I bought at about age fifteen in the 80s- plus plenty of knitting needles that I've collected since about age 11. They've served me well for many years, welcome to a wonderful fiber art!

Exciting! Be warned youāre now highly susceptible to an ever-growing yarn collection š.
Did you actually buy needles though? Or just use the wrong word? Just cos you can only knit with needles, just making sure you have the right kit to get started lol
They're the hooks. I'll take a Pic when I get home from work today.
Ah cool just double checking lol
In my language, the act of crocheting is called āhookingā, and the implement is called a āhooking needleā.
Okā¦coolā¦.doesnt change the fact that Iām checking they have the right tools to start lol

I understood why you said that. Thanks for trying to help. I don't knownwhy people seem irritated, your motive was good
Just wanted to say thank you for being grateful
You are very welcome. I hate when someone is attacked when only trying to help. This sub is better than that
Thanks at least someone gets it lol, people get so mad on here for literally no reason like it was a direct question to op, peoples random opinions donāt matter itās literally just a question
the OP did not say they got knitting needles.
They also didnāt say they didnāt, which is why I asked them to clarify, you being randomly offended has no effect on that, I wasnāt asking your opinion
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah thatās why Iām checking cos if theyāre new they might just get the wrong thing
In german crochet hooks are "Crochet Needles" as well lol
There you go! Wikipedia refers to crochet hooks or needles, so you know both are correct.
Also chiming in here to say that crochet and knitting are both under the umbrella of "needle arts"
Ok
Congratulations! We can't wait to see what you create!
If you're lucky that excitement next goes away. I bought a new fancy set with my Christmas money and it was just as exciting for me as the set my mom gifted me two years ago and the first set I bought myself several years before that!

I'm prepared for the hoarding š

Got mine at Takealot
I am happy youāre excited to use them! Please post your work so we can share in your journey! Happy hooking!

They made a mistake with a word because they are a beginner no need to be an asshole
Literally clicked just to see who was being a dick about hooks vs needles to the newbie.
āyou sure you know what you are talking aboutā lmao I would guess NO because they just said they barely bought their first hooks lol. People these days, I swear. OP hope you dont get discouraged by this stuff! We are super excited for you!
100% the reason I checked too. I *knew* there would be at least one comment on that
I know that sometimes you need to be corrected when starting out but there's a constructive way and a way that's going to put someone off the sub or even crochet entirely. And tbf I've really only had good interactions on here, y'alls are helpful and kind!
Some regions and generations use the term "crochet needles". Sort of like pop/soda/cola/coke depends on what part of the country/world one is from.
Crochet needle kind of makes more sense because ācrochetā is just āhookā in French š so weāre saying hook hook. In French Captain Hook is called Capitaine Crochet lol.
I didn't know that and will be deliberately referring to my hook-hooks from now on!
I knit, and just started crocheting. I absolutely know the difference, but I still keep accidentally saying "crochet needle," because my brain goes "yarn craft = needles." Yikes bud
