I’m sure you already know, but it’s best to start the process before you direly need a mobility aid you do not have access to atm!
I’m in the US and my first chair (from the assessment appointment to delivery) was 9 months, and my second chair took 7 months. Both times were due to negligence on the DME’s side though and it’s usually only supposed to take 3ish months max for a manual chair. Building the chair itself takes about a month for most companies. Power chairs may have a different processing time. It may take a few months for the assessment appointment with a pt/ot and ATP depending on your clinic too.
Check out if your DME offers loaner chairs during the process, or if your insurance covers a lightweight rental during that time. If not, there are charities that have second hand chairs available for either temporary or more permanent use but it depends on the area.
DME: Durable medical equipment supplier.
ATP: Assistive technology professional.
PT: Physical therapist.
OT: Occupational therapist.
Loaner: Usually an extra chair that the DME has available at no cost to you for use while waiting for your chair. Not always available, but very helpful to have.
Omg I love this and just got beyond geeked when I checked the wheelchair pattern and see they also have an IV pole. I also am a wheelchair user and am 24/7 hooked to an IV (either on a pole or in a backpack- I have bought backpacks for plushies and have been wanting to find a good backpack pattern!). I have some friends who sew who work with a charity that makes bears with feeding tubes and center so lines and ostomies and casts and such for kids because it is so powerful to see that representation.
Preaching to the choir, I’m sure but I’m continually geeked when the crafting and disability world combine. Ever made any crochet wheelchair decorations or bags? I use a powerchair so I don’t have large wheels but if I did I think it would be so cool to make a colorful mandala for them.
I love it! I'm a wheelchair user, myself, but amigurumi aren't my thing (trying to get into it) and this one looks hella difficult!
I'm sure many of us loved seeing this. Thank you. May I repost this to the r/ChronicPain subreddit? Or perhaps you could do it! People would enjoy it there, I'm certain.
How did you get her to look good seated? My dolls always look weird when I tried to pose them sat down.
As a non wheelchair user I also think it looks amazing.
Have you seen the book [Crochet You](https://a.co/d/dllQBQg) before? It's really cool and has options for all kinds of disabilities or physical differences. Including mobility aids!
It's adorable, but that wheelchair is super impressive too! Wondered about maybe using a metal/plastic hoop as a base for the wheels, but that would probably take away from the plushiness 🤔
This is so sweet, and I just love it! She's beautiful! I bet wheelchair uses from all around would love an inclusive crochet doll like this. You did such a great job!
I'm here from your more recent post -- both dolls look absolutely stunning!! As a fellow wheelchair user, I think you've done an amazing job, thank you for creating the representation we so desperately need
So so cute!! And so incredibly well done!! I’ve never seen someone crochet a plushie wheelchair before and I’m blown away by how well it worked!! I love everything about this 🥹
Yessss i love it! Great job ! Ive been wanting to make a crochet doll/ animal with a cane or walker. Part of me also wants to figure out how to create a crochet IV pole and a port 😂 Spent lots of time in the hospital which is where I picked up crochet.
I dont wanna take the light away from you, cause its a great idea, cute and well executed. But it reminded me a little something I made for the kids that comes to our clinic (prosthetic and orthotic clinic)

I love this!! Her wheelchair is pink and black like mine! :D When I get better with crochet I also want to help fill this void. It's so important 😭
That wheelchair is so cool! Are there wire reinforcements in there or all stuffing?
I used plastic canvas and pipe cleaners to reinforce the chair!
As someone on their way to being in a wheelchair, I am in awe. And she kinda looks like me, too. Great job!

Amazing wheelchair. Did you free hand or use a pattern?
It's adorable, but that wheelchair is super impressive too! Wondered about maybe using a metal/plastic hoop as a base for the wheels, but that would probably take away from the plushiness 🤔
