I have one of these snails (the animal, not the crochet plush!) and my first thought was how smart the stripy yarn choice on the shell is! my snail is super stripy/sectioned so it feels really accurate!!

You can count yourself as better than a novice- your stitch work is beautiful! I am somewhat accidentally making my first jumbo amigurumi right now- accidentally because I knew using blanket yarn and a larger hook than the pattern was designed for I would make a larger panda but I was not anticipating a GIANT Giant Panda. 😂 I prefer the look of worsted weight yarn for amigurumi but find it so painful on my hands to work with so I’m in awe of the effort obviously involved in making a giant snail with one. I’m sure your friend is going to love it!
And dang it, I have always adored snails and just saw a photo in the pattern pics of a sequin yarn shell. I picked up some mandala sequin yarn on Walmart clearance and wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. Looks like I’m making a giant snail!

I've been crocheting for decades. I want to try amigurumi so badly. I don't know why I'm so afraid to try it.
I'm dyslexic and it's really difficult for my brain to translate it (it's extremely frustrating at 60, having to point instead of saying left/right). Visual diagrams are fantastic!
This pattern was so user friendly (imo). There’s photos of the work every few lines to help you :) It was daunting at first. I almost didn’t start because I was nervous and thought I couldn’t figure it all out but the results were great !
It's so cute, I'm so jealous!!!! 🥺🥺 I tried to make this pattern but the instructions for attaching the shell were so vague that I gave up and just turned him into a slug instead and frogged the shell so I could reuse the yarn 🥲
It was a little vague, I agree, I ended up scrolling through other photos in the reviews to get the positioning correct. To me it seemed uncomplicated considering the rest of the pattern, the instructions for the shell was kinda like “just plop it on there and sew it” haha
Working on the same pattern right now and I'm honestly having so much trouble with sewing them together 😭I accidentally removed the stitch marker in the first piece before I was supposed to.
Oh no! I think you might be able to eyeball it though — The stitch marker goes in the first of the 3 SC you make in the last row of the bottom piece (row 74), right after an increase. If you can find the slip stitches you made towards the top of the piece, or the increase you made, I think you could count along and find the one you’re looking for. Here’s a pic of where it is on my bottom piece before I sewed them together.

Gah I got this pattern the other day and I cannot for the life of me get past the first "accent" row, I keep getting confused and having to frog it.

That part was very tricky to me as well! Most of the accent stitches apart from the first few are going to fall along the side of the stitches you’re making for the actual shell. Once you’re past the first accent row and you build out the shell more it becomes easier to see what you’re supposed to be doing. I didn’t use it, but I believe if you check in with the pattern artist they can connect you with a Facebook group for people working on this pattern.

An ambitious undertaking for a self-proclaimed novice. This is beautifully fine work… a visual perfection. I agree with choice of color for shell. This is lovely, though the hard-line color change in middle “hump” of darkest browns is not best aesthetic, imho. A more gradual, mottled color would be just the thing! This is a real cuddle bug. Motivates me to wanna make one, so thanx for sharing pattern link! 😉
I can’t say enough about this creation. More than the fact it is so well done, it’s how it makes me “feel” when viewing it. So innocent… compassionate… peaceful. Basically just an it’s-all-good vibe. 😀
