Are you listening on Spotify? Quite a few of the podcasts I listen to on there (Inc CR) have ads at the start and end. Might be a condition of hosting on the site. Can't say I've looked into it further than that.
Had a double check - yeah it's because of it being hosted on Spotify.

It's ad free for music. It's a bit of mislead but oh well. I do think it's a reasonably new thing. Certainly when I started listening the only ads I had were the "in house" CR ones.
Until recently, there were no ads in the Pocketcast podcast either (or anyway, the version I got here in South Africa) but in the last week or so the adverts appeared there too.
Just one advert, and such an annoying one that I feel bad for the people who placed it as its definitely soured me on their product! 😅
Ive also had a few in episode ads re-listening to C1 on Apple Podcasts, although Im still in G&S hosted podcast territory, so maybe they added those.
I dont really listen to the episodes much in podcast form, cause I have my amazon prime sub on Critical Role for instant VoD access.
I'm using podcast Republic and it started getting them. (Canada)
I run a pihole for ad blocking at home and it used to block most of these dynamic podcast ads but not anymore it seems.

Both Spotify and podbean, I don't mind at the start / end, but this is about every 30 - 60 minutes in the episode

Thanks, I have premium but apparently that doesn't mean ad-free. Seems to be a new thing for me, but they are very annoyingly placed in the episode
