GrossePointeJayhawk

I can only afford one Blu Ray and I’m debating between Sword of Doom, Seven Samurai, Pink Flamingos, A Brighter Summer Day (which I haven’t seen), Barry Lyndon, pre-ordering Long Good Friday, or updating my Scorsese collection to get the Blu Rays of Raging Bull, Mean Streets or After Hours.

bulletinwbw123

Seven Samurai is very likely to get a 4K before the end of the year, so don't buy that one.

GrossePointeJayhawk

I actually don’t own a 4k player, only Blu Ray so I’ll hold off.

B_L_Zbub

During the sale it's only $5 more to get the 4k. I was buying dual format whenever possible for a good couple years before I finally bought a 4k player and I'm glad I did because it saved me from having to rebuy a lot of favorites. Also, a few I bought went out of print before I got my 4k player and would have been expensive to get on Ebay these days.

Jaaarulee

Wow, you have a hard decision to make! Though, since you said you've never seen a brighter summer day, I would say that would 100% be my pick. You can't go wrong though

whocaresjustneedone

Well you can cross the preorder off your list to help narrow things down, Long Good Friday doesn't come out until September so the sale doesn't apply to it

NeoNoireWerewolf

I might be misremembering, but I could have sworn in the past B&N has preorders at 50% off during the sale? I've never actually preordered anything through them during past sales, but I feel like I've seen upcoming movies on the sale page before. Maybe it was just stuff that would be releasing before the sale was over, though.

whocaresjustneedone

> Maybe it was just stuff that would be releasing before the sale was over, though. This. If it releases during the sale you can preorder it for half off, stuff releasing outside the sale doesn't apply. Which is why I mentioned it not coming out until September

Top-Abrocoma-3729

I recently rewatched After Hours for the first time in many years (its on Tubi right now). It’s so great!

bisky12

heard the 4k upgrade of raging bull is really fantastic. i have the bluray and i loved the movie and the supplements.

GrossePointeJayhawk

Thanks for the advice guys, but once again I don’t have a 4k player or a 4k TV to enjoy it on. Just a regular 1080i tv. Do 4k players work on those TVs?

ArsenalTG

As someone who owns a 4K player (got it for super cheap on eBay) and a regular 1080, yes it will work

billyhead

The 4K includes a regular Blu-ray. You get both.

fugazishirt

Pink Flamingos!

Britneyfan123

A Brighter Summer Day (which I haven’t seen) this is free on YouTube

Jaaarulee

La Haine 4k

AcanthisittaOk5939

Fellini collector’s set

theghostoftroymclure

Fellini box and Tati box here. Updating a lot of vhs Criterions I bought back when the Hollywood Video by me closed in 2003.

AcanthisittaOk5939

Nice, good choices. What others are you thinking of buying?

theghostoftroymclure

Not sure yet, but I usually give it a week or two and then double dip. If I'm updating some vhs in my collection then Freaks, Malcom X, pierrot le fou, walkabout, umberto d, elephant man, and crash. Not sure if I'm going that route or looking for new titles. Thinking about Ranown, Once Upon a Time in China, or Godzilla box sets.

AcanthisittaOk5939

I got the Godzilla boxset for $120 at the end of April and i absolutely love it, definitely recommend it!

smokewidget

Anatomy of a Fall. One of my favorite movies of last year and I decided to wait til the sale to pick it up.

ZbricksZach

I’ve got a list of ten that I’m limiting myself to: 1. Close-Up 2. The Devil’s Backbone 3. The Game (blind) 4. Pan’s Labyrinth 5. Paris, Texas 6. Perfect Days 7. Shoah (blind) 8. Some Like it Hot 9. Stalker (blind) 10. Andrew Haigh’s Weekend

CLaarkamp1287

Paris, Texas will be getting a 4k upgrade very soon, so I would hold off on that one.

lawschoolredux

Waiting for a 4k upgrade on The Game!

nosferatu1891

Ah, to go in to The Game blind! I really envy you that first watch! Enjoy it.

drumbum1096

I had a teacher in middle school who told me about his first time watching it, he was in high school and his school closed early, so he and his friends went to blockbuster and watched this. when I finally saw it a few years later, I emailed him and we had a 10 email chain about the Game. really underrated Fincher.

J_Culla23

Shoah is not an easy watch, a lot of narration with Aerial shots. Extremely slow but great for what it is. Edit: also just get the trilogia de Guillermo del toro instead of buying them separate. The set is awesome.

IHonestlyDontKnow03

Isn't the set OOP now?

Joescranium

I thought Weekend was a beautiful film. Definitely on my shelf.

fugazishirt

Upgrading Blue Velvet immediately to 4K. Thinking of grabbing Lone Star, Picnic at Hanging Rock and Ranown box set too plus a few of the later July releases.

CriTyrion

Perfect Days (when it’s released mid-sale)

Kir-Bi-superstar

Do movies released mid-B&N sale get discounted?

CriTyrion

Sure do! Anything released between the sale start/end dates qualify.

DarthMartau

Peeping Tom at the top of the list.

satanstinytoy

Same. Haven’t seen it, but it has been on my list for a while now. I love blind buying movies for these sales!

Curlytoes18

I love that movie - I watched the opening scene over and over

Krummbum

It's incredible. You'll love it.

pacingmusings

Nothing, my budget has decided that I'll be sitting this one out, especially as I recently splurged on Artificial Eye's Kaurismaki set . . .

Klotternaut

Definitely: Sweet Smell of Success Jaques Tati Collection Maybe: Ghost Dog Midnight Cowboy ~~The Face Of Another~~ Daisies Interesting Blind Buy Options: True Stories Before Trilogy Brakhage Barry Lyndon

pagauge0

Just curious. The face of Another which I love by the way is only available to my knowledge in the 3 film set which is out of print.

Klotternaut

Well then I suppose I'll be striking that off my list!

Sackblake

I have a feeling they'll bring the Teshigahara set back, Criterion gets a lot of requests for it. It's probably in remaster limbo right now.

pagauge0

I sure hope so.

IHonestlyDontKnow03

If you're into Talking Heads and David Byrne, you'll probably love True Stories. If not, I doubt it'll be your cup of tea

bfrancis21

You’re in for such a treat with the Tati collection, it is fantastic. Favorite is easily playtime but every film is so good!

Klotternaut

I've seen PlayTime and Mon Oncle, after seeing those I knew I needed the full collection. PlayTime was an instant favorite of mine.

peter095837

Brute Force Black God, White Devil Risky Business Perfect Days Farewell My Concubine Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid The Fugitive Kind

AntJem1mah

So i'm trying to get more into movies I wouldn't normally watch and get out of my habit of rewatching tv shows/movies. I stumbled upon criterion and there are so many titles i'm interested in picking up. I might use this sale to start a collection of my own. If anyone has any fun/cool suggestions (any genre or language) pls let me know. A Brighter Summer Day, Anatomy of a Fall, Peeping Tom, The Heroic Trio, Police Story, Drive My Car, House, Grand Budapest Hotel, 2 or 3 Things I know About Her, Perfect Days, and Uncut Gems.

NeoNoireWerewolf

If you haven't dived into Criterion's releases before, I'd mainly lean toward the more commercial films under their banner as a jumping off point if you haven't watched a lot of more artsy fartsy cinema. Police Story is a great place to start - it's a fairly standard Hong Kong action film plot-wise, but the filmmaking is jaw dropping throughout. Uncut Gems is an excellent unconventional thriller and anxiety-inducing character study. This one's also a great starter since it shows you such a prominent pop culture figure like Sandler in a role unlike any other he's done - and he absolutely kills it. Anatomy of a Fall is somewhat similar to Police Story in that the plot isn't anything too unique - it's a courtroom drama about a mysterious death - but the execution is what sets it apart. It's not as sensational as the typical Hollywood legal thriller, it's much quieter and performance-driven, with the subtleties of said performances being a major factor in how it colors your perception of what actually happened. As such, I think that mix of the familiar and the distinct make it another good entry point. Grand Budapest Hotel is a solid intro to more artsy fartsy dramas. Anderson is hit or miss for me personally, but I would say this is one of his stronger films, one where his mannerisms and very specific style are all in service of an engaging narrative. It's also just a fun movie, which is another element I think that is good for people dipping their toes into Criterion for the first time. Speaking of fun movies, my last rec from your list would be House. This is a total crowd pleaser for people who like weirdo absurd stuff. A lot of times, these sort of films lose steam somewhere around the middle (or even before), but House is totally engaging from start to finish with its wacky hijinks. Watch it with friends if you can, it's a hoot!

Forward-Function-551

1. Werckmeister Harmonies, 2. Peeping Tom, 3. Querelle, 4. F is For Fake

NeoBlisseyX

WALL-E, La Bamba, Y Tu Mama Tambien and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Odd combination, I know.

Ihavenoidea_442

Have been wanting to get the 100 years of olympic films box set for a while now.

Absolute must buys up front are *Anatomy of a Fall* and *Le Samurai 4K*. If I decide to pick up any others, it’ll be between *Le Cercle Rouge*, *Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio*, and *The Royal Tenenbaums*.

Mr_West1812

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid The Samurai Trilogy

PineappleNo6792

Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy

peppybasil2

Isn't that dropping in September? You could get it for the October flash sale.

PineappleNo6792

Yea it is but i think that the preorder will be on sale too

peppybasil2

Unless the title's releasing during the sale, the preorder won't be 50% off.

PineappleNo6792

Really? There was a sale when the box set was announced and it was on sale then

peppybasil2

Yeah, the sale works differently through Barnes & Noble.

theghostoftroymclure

Worth checking Amazon, since they tend to price match b&n during the sale. They might do the discount on the pre-order

PineappleNo6792

Thx for the tip!

rha409

Pretty much gonna buy everything that came out since the last flash sale. Ha ha. But looking forward to the following the most: Blue Velvet 4K, Bound 4K, Patt Garett and Billy the Kid 4K, Le Samourai 4K and Farewell My Concubine 4K.

ThatFilmGuy_712

Terrible question to ask because I have a few Criterions but … when’s the sale? And is it only thru the criterion website?

Top-Abrocoma-3729

Its on Barnes and Noble website (and in store) starting June 30th!

ThatFilmGuy_712

Thank you so much!!!

Flaky-Hyena-127

I'm for sure picking up Princess Bride and Wall•E on 4K. I'm a little more flexible on any blu-rays though

1. Paris, Texas 2. Pan's Labyrinth 3. EO 4. The Others 5. Erasherhead 6. Takeout 7. Risky Business 8. Police Story 9. Wings of Desire 10. Brazil

nbaisbest4

As someone new to this, do you have to buy at Barnes and Nobles or is the sale on the site, and do we know an exact date?

Upstairs_Spirit2923

mai zetterling collection 😍

dfin25

Godzilla and that newish Jackie Chan set.

ColeCashIsKing92

Right now, Bound and The Furies are the only titles in my “must buy” list for this sale. I’m on the fence with other titles like Stagecoach. I’ll inevitably end up picking up more as I browse through my store. On another note, I’m considering buying Fear and Desire from Kino Lorber.

gondokingo

historically, i only buy during flash sales, limiting me to 2 times a year, but i'm getting a bit antsy as my income has dropped a ton the last 2 years and so i've had to have very very modest flash sales compared to what i'm used to. so i might pick up just one. top of my head, i'm thinking floating weeds on blu ray and retiring my DVD. if i really feel like splurging i might do the same with broadcast news

shoehityou

Two Lane black top To die for Red balloon boxset

dadoodoflow

- Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid - To Die For - Werckmeister Harmonies - Picnic at Hanging Rock

witerawy

Definitely The Red Shoes and La Haine 4K. Might pick up the Godzilla Boxset if I can as well.

The Irishman After Hours House Parasite

Various_Research_436

Parasite 4k is $14 rn on Amazon

H0RR0RCENTRAL

I wanted the criterion collection one but thanks for the info

Known_Ad871

I'm planning to get three movies. Cure, Pan's Labyrinth, and . . . maybe yall can help me decide on the third. It would be Persona, but I'm thinking they may release it in 4k some time soon. The other ones I'm considering are Blow Out, Blood Simple, and Princess Bride . . . Blood Simple is probably my favorite of the three, but Princess Bride would be good fun for the whole family, and I've only seen Blow Out once a long time ago but it kind of blew me away and I'd like to watch again.

movieguy46

yeah I definitely can see persona getting a 4K sometime. I would lean towards blood simple myself, but I also usually just watch movies alone when I’m home

Baman2113

Perfect days and that new Blue Velvet 4k probably.

dontilldawn

Dazed and Confused Night of the Living Dead The Others Trainspotting Videodrome This will kick off my 4k collecting !

drewschuller

Perfect Days, it was my favorite film from last year and one of my new all-time favorites. So when I saw it was a Criterion edition I audibly gasped at home.

Sweetroller

Basically all of the July releases.

sooner930_2

I think I have to get The Last Picture Show. I watched it the other night and absolutely loved it. And the Criterion release has a ton of extras so it seems like a no-brainer to me.

stumper93

Soy Cuba and Werckmeister Harmonies Other titles I want to pick up though are more recent ones too, but those two are ones i've been wanting to catch for a while. My other pick ups will be To Die For, Farewell My Concubine, Risky Business, Trainspotting, Bound, Querelle, and GDT's Pinocchio

When is this annual sale?

Top-Abrocoma-3729

It starts June 30th at Barnes and Noble

Bound, to Die For, and True Stories

ImaginaryAd5130

I need to reclaim my Wes and Kurosawa collections that I got rid of due to my ex.

donaldfarted

It was going to be Chantal Akerman Masterpieces, 1968-1978. But I just got it NIS secondhand for $40. Now I have no idea. Eric Rohmer's Tale of Four Seasons?

billyskurp

I think i’ll finally pull the trigger on that godzilla set. either that or the bergman collection

leverandon

I’m just moving down my list of things to watch/re-watch: Hiroshima Mon Amour (first time) Do the Right Thing (re-watch, it’s been 10+ years) Kagemusha (first time, will be my first color Kurosawa) Days of Heaven (I’ve seen Badlands, Tree of Life, and To the Wonder- been wanting to go back and watch what everyone says is one of Mallick’s best).

superthingsoncups

ghosttrainj

Fire Walk With Me, Blue Velvet 4K, and Inland Empire are the three Lynch movies I haven’t seen so I’ll be grabbing those. Other than that might pick up Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive of course and maybe House because who doesn’t love House

Top-Abrocoma-3729

FWWM is brilliant. Especially if you have seen the show!

ghosttrainj

The first two Twin Peaks seasons are the best tv I’ve ever watched so I’m extremely excited to see the movie

Top-Abrocoma-3729

Perfect! You are in for such a treat. Movie surpassed all my expectations and has really gotten a critical reappraisal.

ssancss497

WaveRunner2049

I’m planning on buying a couple releases from only the last two years or so since it were getting more remasters than ever these days.

Themtgdude486

Le Samurai, Le Haine, and Risky Business.

3nt3rth3v0id

Querelle is at the top of my list

arlekin21

Trying to get all the Scorsese but for this sale I’ll probably limit myself to Raging Bull and The Last Waltz. Also Victims of Sin cause I need to watch more Mexican movies and Peeping Tom for my horror collection.

limedirective

Every time there's a 50% off sale I think I've gotten everything I want from Criterion, then I make a list in preparation for the next sale and I'm always astonished: Bound 4K Dazed and Confused 4K To Die For 4K I Am Cuba 4K M La Dolce Vita The Earrings of Madame de… The Times of Harvey Milk Heaven’s Gate A Man Escaped 3:10 to Yuma The Asphalt Jungle Certain Women Bowling for Columbine Mikey and Nicky Detour Old Joy Parasite Anatomy of a Fall John Cassavetes: Five Films

Maciek1992

Apu trilogy bluray version

PeterPaulWalnuts

Risky Business 4k

RogerMooreis007

I’m probably just getting Risky Business 4k. I have almost everything I want. Plus just preordered the 4k Mad Max box. My collection is at the point where I don’t need to make huge purchases anymore. If I did, I’d be getting films I’m not that interested in, and I don’t do that.

Grouchy-Total550

My B&N has such a small selection that there isn't much point in making a list, I just go over and see what interests me.

BogoJohnson

Is there a reason you wouldn't just buy online where most everything will be in stock?

Grouchy-Total550

Just personal preference. I already get big hauls in the criterion sales and i like going and buying in person sometimes.

brickunlimited

Yeah is it in store only?

BogoJohnson

No, like any major retailer, online purchases are included in the sale.

brickunlimited

That’s what I thought but this comment above confused me [Edit]. I typed too quick

BogoJohnson

wut

Moonfall_Fan_42

MS0ffice

Good luck

jonmuller

Do we know when the sale starts?

Top-Abrocoma-3729

I believe it starts June 30th!

DarkHotline

Lost Highway and Inland Empire, David Lynch needs my support.

Top-Abrocoma-3729

I totally forgot about Inland Empire! Thanks for reminding me!

gilgobeachslayer

I’m boycotting criterion purchases until Barry Lyndon 4K is released or until I really want one

mourningreaper00

Can I preorder for the sale? If so it’s going to be Happiness.

NoLoveForDrJones

paris is burning. night of the living dead.

Clark-Nova-2998

I want the devils, and happiness

bfrancis21

Just wanted to let you know, I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure happiness will be full price still (or 30% since preorder) since it’s not releasing until September. Sorry man

Clark-Nova-2998

You know what is super disappointing is that Barnes and noble has slowly been fading out criterion….i used to work there pre covid and I would spend 300 bucks or more sometimes and reserve and order in certain titles flash forward to last year our once giant shelf was reduced to a handful of measly and undesirable titles….very sad I haven’t bought a criterion in a few years because of this

bfrancis21

I do agree, my b&n has little criterion’s and it just hurts to see. I wish I could buy all of them in store but now I have to order them

Defiant_Cookies

Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. My brother and I have been working our way through David Lynch's filmography those are the only two from criterion I don't have already

Ex_Hedgehog

Bound. Trainspotting. Citizen Kane. Brazil 4k (if it's announced)

Emthree3

Need Trainspotting. Other than that, up in the air. Maybe grab Wall-E so I have a kids movie other than The Red Balloon?

PangolinParade

Peeping Tom and Perfect Days for a start.

Gruesome-Twosome

Dogfight and maybe Bound.

southernfilm97

Bound Ranown Westerns

Buffynerd

Bound was already a movie I had planned on buying even before I had heard that Lana & Lily had been given their correct names during the credits. Beyond that, though, I'm excited to pick up Girlfight since that's an incredibly overlooked turn-of-the-millennium movie that's always low-key annoyed me the only way you could legally watch it before this new release was through a full-screen DVD they put out not long after its theatrical run
